“Great stay in San Jose”
Reviewed June 20, 2013 via mobile

Wow - what an amazing hotel, loved everything from the beautiful heritage setting to the friendly service...and room upgrade! I highly recommend eating at the restaurant, the food was amazing and the courtyard setting is stunning. Our waiter Carlos was very attentive, charming and knowledgeable. We had the scollop and pate for entrée (delicious) and duck and fish for main (also very delicious).. The duck was the best I've had in my life, tender, juicy and flavoursome. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

I booked the Grano de Oro through Imagine Latin America as a start and finish point for a two week honeymoon. The building is very attractive from the outside and stands out from its surroundings in San Jose. It's walking distance from the city centre, but I got the impression there wasn't much to see in the immediate vicinity. We were greeted on arrival and kindly given an upgraded room (to deluxe patio) on both occasions we stayed as we'd only booked a standard room because we weren't staying long.

The hotel has real character as it is a warren of corridors but it's all very well decorated and maintained. The room was nicely presented and very clean on both occasions, however a little on the small side. There is a private walled patio which was nice to sit out on and had a small fountain, but this does mean you don't have a view out at all; not that I think there's a huge amount to see around the hotel! There was no bath in the bathroom but the shower was fine.

Although we didn't get time to use them, we went up for a look at the small jacuzzi area on the roof which seemed really nice although could have done with a bit of shade for the sun loungers. The hotel shop was, as you'd expect, fairly expensive ($1.50 for a postcard of the hotel - aren't they usually free?!).

One of the highlights of the hotel is its restaurant which served great breakfasts and absolutely fantastic dinners. The courtyard is really well designed and great to sit out in. The restaurant is definitely a place to dress up in the evenings although being the only place to eat in the hotel, they're quite relaxed about it. We ate dinner twice and weren't disappointed; the food was beautifully prepared and presented and tasted excellent. Wine and cocktails were also very good. The menu certainly isn't cheap, but then the restaurant would quite happily stand up against anything you'd find in major European or US cities so for a splash-out meal, it's worth it.

It would be good if the hotel had another bar area (maybe it did and we missed it?) which was a bit less formal but you can sit in some non-dining sections of the restaurant or at the bar itself.

I'd recommend the hotel as an excellent quality base to stay for a night as a San Jose base, although as even the most dedicated guidebooks tend to admit, there's not a vast amount to keep you entertained in the city as a tourist.

Room Tip: All the rooms appear to be completely individual so without having looked around in detail, it's...

We only got to enjoy this lovely boutique hotel for one night on our way out of the country. We stayed in the Vista De Oro Suite, which was spacious and luxurious with a beautiful city lights view of the city from the large picture window wall. We also had a private Jacuzzi inside the suite and a private entrance to the suite on the top floor of the hotel. It was beautifully decorated with old world dark wood paneling and furnished with very comfortable and colonial style furniture. The bathroom was also spacious with luxurious linens and towels. The dinner in the hotel restaurant was the best we had in Costa Rica and of high standard for anywhere. I understand why it has been voted the finest restaurant in Costa Rica. The beautiful evening open air setting just added to the ambiance. Breakfast the next morning was also quite good. The public areas and check in check out experiences were all outstanding. The only concern I had was that some of the other rooms appeared quite small looking through the windows on our way to ours. Would we stay again? Absolutely!

Room Tip: Vista De Oro Suite worth the splurge!

I can't say much more than has already been said about this property. The service, the hotel, the rooms, the food, everything is excellent. We spent one night here on our trip to Costa Rica in April of 2013 and really loved it. Highly recommended.

Also for LGB travelers, we can say that this hotel is definitely gay-friendly.

This Hotel was definitely a perfect choice for our last night in SanJose! We had a plumbing issue first thing and in 15 minutes it was fixed. That is #1 customer service!
Our dining experience was beyond our expectations!! Fine dining at it's greatest! Service was exemplary and the Hotel staff deserves more than a great hand of applause; maybe a well deserved bonus! Each and everyone at Grano de Oro made our stay unforgettable and we will definitely return!

We spent 5 days here it is the perfect way to spend time in the city while also feeling like you are still on a natural getaway. The decor is beautiful with plants, trees, and natural finishes throughout. We got a delux room and and it came with a private patio, which was fantastic. The service is top notch, and the restaurant has very good food. It is a little pricey, but it is well worth it for what you get. The hotel is right in the city so it is within walking distance of most everything so it is very convenient. It is the perfect way to visit the city while also enjoying peace, and relaxation.

Everything about this hotel exudes class. The hotel is very professionally run. The staff are attentive and your comfort is their pleasure. Can't say enough about the staff. The entire facility is beautifully decorated and the rooms are totally up to date regarding furnishings and fixtures. The restaurant is gorgeous. The food was good, not outstanding, but very adequate. We walked from the hotel to central San Jose and saw nothing that even approaches the beauty of this property, thus my description of an oasis. It truly is. If you are staying in San Jose, look no further than this hotel.
