Second time in San Jose, first time at the Gran de Orno.
This hotel is in the middle of San Jose, not the best area, not a bad area. but very convenient.
The structure was formerly the home of a wealthy businessman, It's beautiful and the rooms are large.
The staff is attentive and the food here is delicious. If you want to stay at a top notch hotel and have some of the best food in Costa Rica. Stay here..
Coffee served at 6am and remains in lobby until restaurant opens.

My family and I stayed at the Grano de Oro for our last night in Costa Rica -- our guide recommended it because it is close to San Jose's airport. While convenient, it is also a very nice little hotel that helped us end our vacation on a high note.

Grano de Oro is a small hotel, actually converted from a Victorian-era mansion in San Jose. Our rooms were, you might say, "cozy." Still, they were very nice, each with a small outside patio area. We found the staff to be quite friendly and polite.

The restaurant in this hotel is its biggest selling point, I believe. It is outstanding. We had dinner and breakfast, and both meals were simply top notch.

Drawbacks? Its wireless internet was quirky -- on again, off again. That was no big deal for us, but it might be for business travelers. Also, its small size prevents it from offering much beyond comfortable rooms and a winning restaurant. There is a small jacuzzi upstairs, but it was occupied by a couple who obviously wanted some private time. Anyway, my young kids were a little bored.

I rated the hotel's location as poor simply because it is located in San Jose. Sadly, the capital city of beautiful Costa Rica is itself pretty wretched. I would not recommend walking in the area around the hotel.

I was quite pleased with Grano de Oro. I think it would work best for couples, but many business travelers and families will also enjoy it.

Traveling through San Jose we stayed at the hotel for 1 night. The indoor/outdoor garden space combined with the physical layout makes this hotel perfect. Resteraunt serves great food and the staff is good, though we were seemingly forgotten about for about 20 minutes while dining.

We stayed here for the first night of our honeymoon. We were only using it as a stop over.

The room was a little small compared to other luxury resorts we stayed in. Everything else was totally faultless. The room was clean and nice, the staff were very helpful and kind. They sorted a packed breakfast for us because they knew they were checking out early. Very thoughtful.

I would thoroughly recommend this place for a short visit

The hotel is wonderful and gorgeous, The staff is excellent but their restaurant needs work. They should go back to ground zero and train their staff. They need to vary their menu on a regular basis. Just walk to Macchu Pichu within three blocks and have a great meal at half the price with excellent service. Jon W

We have stayed at Grano de Oro San Jose three times, for a total of five nights, at the beginning and end of two trips to other parts of Costa Rica. The hotel started with the restoration of one historically significant estate and has expanded to two adjacent properties. We could not tell where one property began or ended because they have integrated them so well. We stayed in deluxe rooms with adjoining courtyards. All have well cared for fountains or small ponds and luxurious tropical plants. The water features provide a soothing white noise that cancels out any city sounds. We stayed in a standard room one night and it was perfectly acceptable but without the ambiance of the courtyard.

The restaurant is rated as one of the top two in the city. I have not been to other outstanding restaurants in San Jose, so I can only say that the quality of this restaurant is superlative in my experience: lots of fresh, high quality fruit and veggies, and menu that meets the needs of omnivores and vegetarians.

Internet access is spotty. We had good signal in one room and almost none in another. But when we discovered the jacuzzi area on the top floor in with tropical courtyard had good signal, we were OK with going there a couple of times a day.

The staff in both the hotel and restaurant are knowledgeable appropriately attentive. They helped us streamline trips to local museums and to both the regional and international airports. When we came back for our last stay, there was a fresh fruit plate in our room, just one last fine touch to make us come back again.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms have inner courtyards that are quite charming. We found them well worth the price.

Felt more like a B& B. exceptional service. Top restaurant in San Jose. 10 blocks from downtown. Highly recommended. Very helpful staff. Will arrange local tourist trips from its own drivers. Gardens inside the hotel. A gem inside a cosmopolitan city.
