Hotel Grano de Oro in San Jose is an excellent spot for lunch or dinner. This restaurant is beautiful with an open courtyard decorated in a rich Costa Rica design. The food and service are impeccable. If you go downstairs there are historical photographs of San Jose and the area.

Harkens from the bygone era of living in a stately manor. Attention to detail from the exterior tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood to the welcoming lobby & staff - this hotel does not fall short. Rooms tastefully appointed and a award winning on-site restaurant are sure to delight.

We stayed at Hotel Grano de Oro two nights, on our arrival and before departure from the San Jose airport.

The desk staff at this hotel are among the best in the industry - very attentive, helpful, and fluent in Spanish and English.

The hotel (we are told) was the home of the Pozuelo family, famous for their cookies which you'll find in most any grocery store in Costa Rica. So, as another writer said, the rooms are similar to a B&B. There is no swimming pool, though there are the two roof-top jacuzzis. The back garden area is heavily planted, so you don't feel like you are in the city. Rooms are very nice and well-kept, though they are a bit small (think large guest bedroom in a friend's house). Everything is very clean, and it was very quiet in our room, though you might hear the facilities from another room at times (not bothersome though).

The restaurant has a nice ambiance, and the outdoor dining area is wonderful for breakfast (it's a central court within the hotel). The food at the restaurant was excellent. We ate there three times, and two of the times the wait staff was exceptional. On one occasion, the waiter was hard to get hold of for any reason, and even when we did, he delayed coming over (this was a different waiter than we'd had previously). Food was always excellent, though...

When you are in this hotel, it feels a bit like you are contained in a small oasis within a not-so-nice area of the city. You can quickly access any sights in town via taxi from here (e.g. National Theatre, the museums), so it's a good location if you want to stay somewhere local and not be in a generic chain hotel.

Accessibility is pretty good if you get a first floor room - just the entry stairs to deal with.

Aside from what has been said again and again about this being a beautiful hotel (which it is,) I wanted to write to let you know that it is also a hotel with heart.

Last week I developed a severe allergy and was told that I could leave the hospital but must stay somewhere nearby and we chose Hotel Grano de Oro. About 15 minutes after checking in, my allergy returned and I had to rush immediately back to the hospital, where I was admitted and told I could not leave that night. We knew that it was a lot to ask to refund our stay, especially because all of our belongings were in the room and they could have used it for someone else.

When I was finally released the next afternoon, the staff graciously let us know that would not be charging us for that last night. It literally brought tears to my eyes, especially after already having had to pay for the hospital stay.

We ended up spending the next night there and it was the perfect place to relax and recover.

We would definitely recommend them, not only for the beauty and character of the hotel but for the kindness and empathy that they show their guests. Muchas gracias por todo!!

For us, this was a one night stop on the way to Monteverde and Guanacaste. The hotel room reminded me of a bed and breakfast. The room was a little on the small side, but clean, comfortable and elegant.
We especially enjoyed the "open air" restaurant. It was just beautiful and the food was terrific. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Jose.
There were two jacuzzis up on the roof for guest to use as well. While we didn't partake in the jacuzzi - it did look like fun!

This is a beautiful hotel with great service and a truly excellent restaurant. We stayed there 5 days and it was very pleasant. The only drawbacks are that the Internet service was slow and dropped the connection all the time (very frustrating), it was not close to any of the museums, and there was a lot of street noise. Still, in San Jose, it is a very good choice. The restaurant is what really makes this place (going to do a separate review).

Room Tip: We had room 4 and there was no noise from other rooms, just street noise which I think all rooms wou...
