This hotel was great. My girlfriend and I arrived several hours after check in and we were upgraded to a suite, and given a bottle of champagne. The parking (which is free), was staffed by attendants who were on point, and very professional. The free breakfast in the morning was excellent as well, and the doormen and security guards were great.
The only downside to this place, is that it is a pain in the keister to find. However, that is the case for basically all of Costa Rica. I drove past the hotel at least three or four times, before stopping a cab driver and asking him where it was. He then chuckled, and pointed at the building right in front of us. Bottom line, make sure you have their phone number, and really know how to find the place, using landmarks.

We would like to thank Apprentice_Jet_Set for the great review.

The issue with street names and signs is absolutely accurate. Costa Rica and especially San José are hard to navigate, especially for first time visitors.

For as long as I can remember, addresses and directions have been given based on landmarks, distances (expressed in meters or city blocks) and cardinal points (North, South, East, West).

Hotel Presidente’s address could be stated as: “200 metros Este de la Plaza de la Cultura”, or “200 meters East from Plaza de la Cultura (Plaza of Culture)”. Not a lot of help if a driver doesn’t know where the Plaza de la Cultura is, or if he/she doesn’t know that it is not possible to drive 200 meters East from Plaza de la Cultura as the road going East from the Plaza is a Pedestrian Boulevard.

It gets worse. Sometime the landmark doesn’t even exist anymore. It is not unusual to get directions that sound something like: “Del Antiguo Registro Nacional, una cuadra al Sur”, or “From the former National Registry Building, one block South”.

This is true for most of the Country. In case the reader wonders how we Costa Ricans get our mail, most of us (including the Hotel) have Post Office Boxes.

Numerous attempts have been made to try and change this long time tradition, but they have all been unsuccessful. It has become a part of Costa Rican idiosyncrasy and it has proven difficult to change.

A strong push towards getting the streets identified is being made by the private sector and the Municipalidad de San José (City Hall). It has a very good chance of succeeding and being carried our within the year.

A map with detailed instructions on how to drive to the Hotel from the Airport (SJO) navigating through easily recognized landmarks can be downloaded for printing from the FAQ section of our web site. Our web address can be found in the Hotel’s information and description at the top of this page. Once this map is downloaded, the drive itself is fairly simple.

We were only in the city for one night, but the hotel was excellent. Beds were fluffy and comfortable, huge shower in the bathroom. Great location to explore the city. Two blocks to the theater, three blocks the other way to parks and museums. Onsite bar and restaurant is great for people watching. Free internet. Buffet breakfast included with several options. Friendly staff, good security. We didn’t book any tours, but they have people ready to help you plan excursions if you want.

We were about two blocks from the National Theater, which was right in the center of the tourist attractions. Being in the center of the city, it was slightly noisy at night.
To be fair, we were given a free upgrade because they thought we were honeymooning, so I can't speak to the quality or value of the regular rooms.
The service was outstanding overall, but it took over 75 minutes for our luggage to transfer from the bellhop to our room.

I had a very nice four night stay at the Presidente last week, Jan 2010. The hotel was clean and secure, the staff friendly and helpful and I was very satisfied. My room was very clean and the bed both large and comfortable. The only problem was a faulty air conditioner the first two nights, but after it was repaired it worked great. The included breakfast was delicious and had a wide assortment of fresh fruits, cooked-to-order eggs and juices. I would stay there again if I return to San Jose.

We used the Presidente as our first port of call upon landing in Costa Rica and were very impressed. The hotel arranged for a driver to pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel (as well as sorting out our onward Interbus tickets at no extra cost) and the staff were extremely helpful throughout.

The rooms were also very good - as you would expect from a good international hotel - very big, clean, excellent bathroom. It is handily located too pretty much in the centre of town.

The restaurant is pretty good too, breakfast was excellent and we had to go back to San Jose at the end of our trip round Costa Rica to catch a Tica Bus - we weren't actually staying at the hotel the second time round but they recognised us from a fortnight before (after only a one night stay - don't know whether to be impressed or worried ha ha!) and were more than happy to look after our bags while we killed time waiting for the Tica Bus.

Very good hotel, highly recommended.
