“Great location and everything else!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

Clean! Immaculate! Great service! Great location! We could walk to the central market -- walk to the handicraft market. Also could walk to Galeria Namu .... read other reviews about that place! We had two rooms -- family of six (3 generations). I stayed with the kids one night while the parents went down the pedestrian walkway to a bar where a soccer tournament was being cheered on by locals. An ATM is nearby at a food court -- restaurants -- taxis -- museums if you have time -- great location! Helpful and friendly staff.
No pool but we didn't have time anyway.

Dear Debracake,

Thank you for choosing the Presidente and for sharing your experience.

Mercado Central (Central Market) is a very interesting place, one that we highly recommend to our guests.

I see that you also got to witness one of the world cup qualifying rounds. It’s a joyous occasion, especially when we win, and our national team is doing very well.

We are glad that you enjoyed your visit to San Jose, and hope you had a safe and pleasant trip back home.

At your service,

Daniel Mikowski

We were booked in there for the first and last nights of our holiday as being convenient for the airport. Situated in centre of San Jose on a pedestrian precinct. First stay: Internal room with a single window into what appeared to be a ventilation shaft. Second stay: 6th floor room with views over San Jose roof tops.
Comfortable rooms with large TV, which we never used, and a safe but most disappointingly no tea or coffee making facility in the room.
Buffet-only breakfast has a reasonable variety of choice, including hot and cold. Most people give up on the toaster after 4 or 5 rounds of ineffectively toasting the same piece of bread. Breakfast coffee is served but it’s a bit of a pantomime if you want tea and when you eventually get the tea it’s the atrocious American style warm water and a separate tea bag (as it is all over Costa Rica).
If you need to make an emergency exit, first grab your room key card. Floor-2 stairs are separated from stairs to floor-1 (ground) by an emergency exit door operated by your room key card. Didn’t find an emergency exit button to open the offending door, so either there isn’t one or you are unlikely to find it quickly if you are unfortunate enough to really need it. Perhaps not the most obvious need to use up your limited escape time groping for your room key card in the dark when there is an emergency, assuming that the electricity is still working to operate the door release.
The gym / spa facilities on the top floor were closed / not available.
Domestics: Electricity: 110v US flat pin. We found the tap water was ok to drink. Free Wifi.

Room Tip: Get a room on floor 5 or 6.

Dear Kevgy,

Thank you for your detailed review. It has been of great help to us.

I am glad to report that the day your review was posted we bought two new toasters for our breakfast buffet. Sometimes these type of small inconveniences are hard to detect, but are easily and immediately dealt with once brought to our attention.

Also the restaurant staff has tea readily available and it is now presented to the table as an option to coffee. Thank you for the heads-up!

Regarding our Gym and Spa, there seems to be a miscommunication on our part as the facilities are open and unlocked 24 hours a day. I would greatly appreciate if you could contact me personally at daniel@hotel-presidente.com so we can find out about and correct the source of the information you were given. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Finally, I can see what you mean regarding the glass door in the second floor. We have an emergency exit at the end of the corridor, but you are absolutely right that in case of an emergency a guest may just as well try to use that one and it needs an emergency mechanism. We will make the necessary adjustments immediately and also improve our emergency signage to better direct guests to the emergency stair. We are currently finishing a comprehensive upgrade of our fire extinguishing systems, and your suggestions come at a great time to facilitate swift implementation as part of the project.

We once again wish to thank you for dedicating your valuable time to share your comments and suggestions with us. As a result, today we can offer an even better service to our guests.

Best wishes for your future travels.

At your service,

Daniel Mikowski

We stayed at Hotel Presidente for the first and last night of our trip to Costa Rica. The best part of Hotel Presidente is the location (if you want to be in the middle of downtown). You are really close to several of the city's major attractions and surrounded by lots of local shops and eateries.
The rooms were clean and nice, and we had a great view of the city from the sixth floor. The staff were pleasant and professional. There was a decent buffet breakfast in the morning. The hotel was like a little oasis in the middle of downtown. I was super glad that we had not rented a car. Driving in downtown San Jose would be quite intimidating and the hotel is not super easy to find. Only disappointing part of our stay was the recommendation we received from the front desk for our last dinner in Costa Rica. The Nuestra Tierre was probably the worst meal we ate in Costa Rica. It could have been because the restaurant was deserted and the staff distracted by the Costa Rica v. Panama soccer game that was on that night.

I stayed here for a couple of days both before and after my trip to the Osa penisula. The hotel is in a very convenient place in San Jose -- just steps away from shopping, restuarants and museums. The staff are are very helpful and courteous. The restuarant didn't appear to be used much by guests (except for breakfast) but the food is good as is the service at the small bar they have in the lobby. I took a day tour that I booked through the hotel that was effortless. My only complaint might be that they only had 1 ice machine, but not an overly big deal.

Loved the hotel. GREAT room, nice buffet breakfast, exceptional customer service. My concern: location. As a white, non-Spanish speaking, middle age woman, I did not feel safe in San Juan - even in late afternoon.

Very difficult to find hotel if you are driving. Attached is one map. Suggest you call hotel and look online for specific directions as one-way streets do not "communicate" with GPS. Very easy to get turned around in this city. If you get lost, seek out help of police and offer tip.

Leave at least ONE hour prior to time needing to be at airport for check in as traffic is horrendous and it is easy to get lost getting in to and out of San Jose.

Recommend dinner at "Equina de Buenos Aires" - great Argentinian food.

If you're looking to stay in downtown San Jose then I would reccomend the Hotel Presidente. A lot of other place in the area appear to be rather run down and the Presidente offers a decent standard of accommodation where others may be found lacking. We arrived late at night and the staff were efficient and more than helpful whilst checking us in. The rooms are modern and the beds are comfortable and the 24 hr hotel security ensure that the place feels safe. The complimentary breakfast is available from 6am which is great for those planning early trips.

The streets are very noisy and dirty looking. The rooms are standard, & the elevators are very small & narrow. Breakfast in included in the room rate, but lunch & dinner is not. Don’t exchange your money there, they’re too expensive & do not give you your money’s worth. Almost 99% of the shops, & restaurants, etc take USD so, you don’t really need to exchange your currency anyway. If you leave the hotel to go out on the town, do not take the taxi the hotel offers, you are better off finding a taxi outside on the street for less $. Make sure you negotiate a price before hopping in – otherwise you will be ripped off. I went to dinner 10 minutes away, and was charged $30 USD roundtrip by the hotel’s taxi service!
