“Corporate Lodging Still Sucks.”

Garden variety sterile hotel with mediocre service. Everything is just as good as it needs to be, nothing more. Towels are seldom changed and you are not permitted to move around the hotel freely as the elevators are controlled by hotel keys. That is tricky if you have a client on another floor. It would be more than fine for a single night layover but spending a week there is a bit painful. The garden is amazing though.

I say good location because you are on the outskirts of downtown and set back a ways and so you miss the traffic and street noise which plagues 95% of the downtown SJ hotels---and you're 15 mins to the airport and 10 minutes by cab or 15 by bus to the biz cente of town. Nice rooms, beautiful pool and deck, small exercise room. For over-priced SJ, very good price for what you're getting.

It's part of the Barcelo chain so that explains the uppity front desk. I swear Barcelo teaches them that, every Barcelo I've been to in Centro America, 2 in CR, is the same way. Give these little buggers a suit and tie and a name tag with a title and they turn into little obnoxious uppity Latin Kings.

Room Tip: Higher the better, to the east or south for a city scape.

We only had a brief one night stay here. The room, accommodations & meals were all fine. We enjoyed walking the paths in the garden & looking at the pool.
The next morning, while going to take the tour bus, I stepped off the narrow sidewalk & into a small gutter. Fortunately I didn't break anything but I nevertheless seriously hurt myself. Later, I met a man who also fell while stepping off the curb & he broke his arm! I understand the gutters are necessary for drainage but the curbs need to be adjusted so that people do not continue to step off them & hurt themselves.

We were booked in at the Barceló as part of our Caravan Tour. The hotel is very isolated . The ground were beautiful and lush. The room was clean. We ate mainly in the cafeteria which was ok for breakfast. There was a station for eggs .
But for dinner the food was very poor. Our group had the misfortune of eating after group. The platter of food? were clean out. They didn't replenish meat etc. Thankfully we had a large lunch on our own.

We stayed in this hotel two nights at the beginning of a Costa Rica tour with Caravan. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and we appreciated the free wi-fi. We had buffet meals at breakfast and dinner as part of our tour, and they were good, though not exceptional. If you plan to see any sites in downtown San Jose, you will need to take a taxi quite a distance. We chose to stay in a centrally located hotel for sightseeing before joining our tour at this hotel. We especially enjoyed the beautiful gardens at the hotel.

The lobby and front desk area are very nice. The guy working at the front desk was NOT nice at all. I don' t think he even smiled once. We had just arrived, in the dark, and tried to ask him if there was anyplace cheap to eat anywhere close. He refused to suggest anything besides the hotel. I guess that's good for business in the hotel but we needed someplace a lot cheaper than what they were offering, and even when we specifically said, "is there anyplace outside of the hotel to eat?", he answered with "well, you can order a la carte items from the hotel restaurant." And he refused to give us a code for free wifi (even though the site we booked it through listed that as a plus. When we went back after checkin to ask again, he still refused, but luckily another employee overheard the conversation and gave us the codes to work with) The wifi is so slow thought it was almost not even worth the effort - at least we could check in though with our ride home from the airport the next day and check email, etc.
The room was clean, but when we arrived to ours, there were two bags that belonged to two other people. We called down, and then had to wait like 20 more minutes to see if we were supposed to stay in the room or not. They finally retrieved the bags to take to their rightful owners. We were speaking Spanish so it wasn't a language barrier.
They do have nice robes and slippers and all the toiletries, even a little kit with toothbrush, emery board (for fingernails), soaps, shampoo, etc. Beds were pretty comfortable. Pool was cold, so we didn't go in, but it was really pretty.
I went to the gym in the morning with my daughter and it was like a sauna! They have all the fitness machines crammed in, and I don't think there is any air conditioning. We made it work, but they definitely need some more air flow in there.
Breakfast, on the other hand, was awesome! The buffet had a LOT of fresh fruit, pastries, biscuits, etc. Also, had fresh eggs, cooked to order (omelet bar, or cooked anyway you want). Of course, they also had scrambled eggs and gallo pinto (rice and beans).
Good location, but we did run into a lot of traffic from a soccer game at the stadium that was just getting out. We went downtown in the morning and made it there pretty quickly and then came back past to go to the airport - it is very central.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights before a tour of Costa Rica. The accommodation provided was of the standard expected of a hotel with a four star rating. Clean and comfortable bedrooms with a good range of toiletries provided, this was particularly useful as one of our suitcases had gone missing on the flights from the UK.

However the service provided by the staff leaves something to be desired particularly in the restaurant. Orders slow to be taken and meals take a long time to be delivered unless of course you use the self service buffet. On the second night, due to inefficiency in the restaurant I was telephoned in my room at around 10-00 pm to ask if I would come down and sign the bill. As I was in bed I asked if I could deal with it the following morning. Half an hour later I received a knock on my bedroom door to discover the restaurant manager asking for payment. Not exactly four star service. The hotel is not conveniently situated for a solo travellers visit to the city, but is OK if you are on a group tour as it is only about 15 minutes from the airport.
We also stayed at this hotel on the final night of our tour and found no change in the restaurant service. As we were leaving for the airport at 4-00am there was no included breakfast, the hotel did however provide a breakfast box to take with us. It proved to be unpalatable including a sandwich, unbuttered with a layer of ham and cheese, two pieces of inedible fruit and a sweet so called fruit juice. All this ended in the rubbish bin at the airport.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear have a better view.
