This was a gem of a find! Incredible price for a top floor suite with a balcony, and only a few blocks from down town! Parking was right next to it, and there's an option for over night parking at the hotel so you don't have to pay the garage next to the hotel.
There might not be elevators, but the kindly front desk receptionist carries your bags for you up those stairs.

I loved the cute boutique feeling off it, rooms were open and large, the diner attached was delicious, and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend it to anyone! Especially when San Jose as a city can be pretty nuts.

Hi Nat W. What a great review and I am really happy you enjoyed yourself here as an urban explorer. I just love to have clients use everything and appreciate what we are trying to do. It's a great old building with an interesting history. Please return again! Safe Travels Thomas

Santa Tomas is a beautiful oasis in a very busy city! When you enter the front door the noise of the city hushes and an old world charm sweeps in!
After a hustle-bustle afternoon of shopping, navigating busy streets or airports this hotel is a peaceful blessing.
The staff is super helpful, the hotel and its rooms are immaculate. Comfy beds, loads of towels and washcloths (washcloths seem to be a thing of the past in most hotels these days),very good shower and very clean without being institutional. The pool and hot tub are fantastic. Very creatively designed. You can go from the hot tub to the pool on a beautiful mosaic slide. There is a little restaurant on site, breakfast was wonderful and included with the room. Wifi was flawless, which was very important to us. Several different areas for sitting around the hotel. Quiet areas , TV lounge or by the pool. All with very comfortable chairs and tables.
It has a lovely warm glow and feeling from the tasteful woodwork interior. (One of my favorite interiors in a hotel , love the look and feel) The historic aspect of this hotel is very well done. The tile floors finish off the look and feel perfectly.
The owner is very present and accessible. We were greeted by him at the pool one afternoon. We are planning a move to CR and he was more than willing to sit and share his experiences and give us wonderful tips and insight. Really nice man.
There is a lot of shopping near by and a cab ride to the center of the city is only a few dollars,$30 to the airport in a cab.
We will be returning to this hotel.

Santo Tomas is the cities hidden gem, tucked back just off the major attractions. Clean, quite and comfortable, and at a very reasonable price. The hotel boast wonderful tile floors and a tiny pool area, just enough for a mid day soak. The staff is pleasant and helpful as well. If you are just passing through town, this is a good place for the night, but for extended stays you may want a full service hotel.

Room Tip: Look around before taking a room as there are some better rooms on the balcony floor with partial vi...

Location of this hotel is excellent, like a hidden rustic gem in the middle of busy city.. Just make sure You are in the right side of avenues/streets and notice the sign of the hotel on the street - it is little bit hidden. What I liked esp, was personal approach to each customer, pool/gym, privacy, parking.. Rooms were old-school-stylish - colonial style. Building is old, outdoor garden with art, wifi.. What else to wish - a good base for city explorers :)

Hi Helen , Wonderful that you saw, appreciated and enjoyed the property and grounds. Having just the right edge is IMPORANT! I love that term you are the first to use it. We are a nice hidden gem here in San Jose. Lots of single female travelers stay here for the clean, quiet and safe environment we create. That is a nice review . Thank You so much Helen, Warmest Regards, Thomas

I stayed at Santo Tomas Hotel for 6 nights; The staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is beautiful and located close to everything, and the rooms are at a reasonable price. I had free wi-fi access no matter where I was in the hotel. I do advise to make arrangements to get a room away from the street if your vacation's more leisure and relaxation. A lot of traffic from early morning to about 9 or 10 o'clock at night, but I was up early in the morning and coming in late from touring, I was able to sleep through anything. I think my only issue was one of the pillowcases still had a faded bloodstain on it. The bed linen did smell clean, and it did look like there were attempts to get the stain out, but it would've been better to have replaced the pillowcase. I used the other pillow to sleep on. Despite that one flaw, I still felt comfortable there and would definately stay there again.

Hi Alex, First thank you for your review. Secondly, I apologize to you about the spot on your pillowcase. WE URGE ALL clients that have any type of issue to immediately contact my front desk for a quick solution. We would have done that right away and this type of comment would not have been necessary. I am interested in my clients satisfaction, especially when it is a reasonable request. I have been in touch with my cleaning department and they will be more attentive. I have five different room types and you were in my least expensive room at $52.00 US including the FREE Hot Cooked Breakfast and as you stated the FREE , Fast and reliable, Wi-Fi was good everywhere on the property. My rooms in the new section are just a few dollars more and well worth it, especially the deluxe superior twins. We also assisted you with the many day tours available. Thank You for allowing us to do that. Safe Travels Thomas

My girlfriend and I just came back from Costa Rica (awesome trip). We stayed at Hotel Santo Tomas for our first night and last nights in the city. It's located in the downtown area with a convenient walk to the Mercado Central, National Theater, Namu Mask Shop, and other hole in the wall restaurants. The rooms are small, but lets be honest, you shouldn't be traveling to a country like Costa Rica if you're going to be spending most of the time in the room. You need to be in search of the best gallo pinto and tamales.

All of the staff members were exceptionally friendly and were willing to help with whatever they could; i.e. parking, car rentals, baggage, etc. Also, fyi, parking is located at the Hotel itself right off the street. This is super convenient if you're renting a car and don't want to risk unwanted Ticos snooping around it. The price to park for me was $11.30 for twenty-four hours. All in all, this is a great value in the downtown area. It's also about a five to ten minute walk from restaurants like Tin Jo and Buenos Aries.

Hi Curtis, Great review , thanks so much for it! You and your girlfriend stayed in one of our economy room at $57.00 for two including the hot coked breakfast. Many say this is the best deal in San Jose , especially when you realize you get the hot jacuzzi, pool , fitness center, open air terraces and green areas in downtown San Jose, and don't forget, Happy Hours from 3 to 7 pm, yes tall cold drinks in the jacuzzi! I also have 4 other room types , some with balcony's and others just really large with two queen size beds, take your pick for your budget, book on the hotel website for the best rate! Again outstanding review and thank you . Happy Trails Thomas
