Hotel Santo Tomas is in the heart of San Jose, yet offers a quiet retreat from the bustling, noisy city outside. The rooms are very clean & comfortable w/ a small outdoor pool & a really nice little bar where you will also get a complimentary breakfast. Carlos is an excellent, friendly bartender & will take good care of you, as will the front desk staff.

I know that SJ has the reputation of being a dangerous, threatening city - but in reality it is no different than any other small city, where you only need to use common sense & caution. I walked w/ my friends to Plaza Cultural, a short distance from the hotel, & felt not at all worried coming home later at night. There are many fabulous cultural offerings in SJ, one only need to check online, & this is a good reason to book a couple of extra nights at Santo Tomas on your way to further CR adventures...

Room Tip: Def book through the hotel web site, as they will give you the best deal.

Hi Gaia, How wonderful that you commented about enjoying San Jose. I have been walking the streets here for 26 years and have never had a problem. As you stated use some common sense. There are lots on really nice day tours that we can assist with and many parks, cultural activities and sights are available. Thank you so much for your kind comments. Hope you return again soon. We stayed two nights at Stano Tomas. The staff were friendly, rooms were very spacious and clean with old-world charm. It was relaxing and very quiet for being in the city. Other travelers were friendly and talkative at the outdoor hotel restaurant. Meals were fine; nothing to write home about, but not bad, and breakfast is free. My son loved the hot tub, but the pool was too chilly for him. We can hang out in the restaurant/bar and see and talk to him in hot tub/pool. Temperature was perfect all the time. We took Stacey's BarrioBird walking tour two blocks away, so got to appreciate the city we are staying at.

Hola Forresthome, Great to have you stay and yes parents can sit by the pool or in the restaurant and keep an eye on their children, good tip. The jacuzzi is hot and the pool is ambient temperature. I am working on a new menu for the restaurant , thank you for the comment. “Quality hotel in the city” what more can one ask for, we provide a nice haven where you can walk to everything in 3 minutes and still recharge your batteries or adapt to your time change for a day or three with a tour tossed in. I will be contacting Stacey about her tour , I did not know it was offered. Again Thank You for the fantastic review Thomas

I recently stayed here with my boyfriend towards the end of our Costa Rican trip for our flight the following day. We had been traveling around the country for the previous week and wanted to check out San Jose before leaving. Based on previous reviews, we picked the Hotel Santo Tomas and were very pleased. We took a cab from the bus station because we were not well oriented with the streets. It was a quick trip and the cab driver explained how it was unsafe to walk anywhere after 6pm due to all the "drugs and prostitutes." While the area seemed "sketchy" as noted by other reviewers, we did not once feel unsafe. We found a great restaurant 10 minutes walk away from the restaurant and ended up finding the main shopping district of the city. The city was bustling with people! It was far from the image that was seen in the area around the hotel. There are plenty of great places to shop, people-watch and dine right around the Santo Tomas. It was a convenient location and we would highly advise a stay here. While the decor seemed outdated, it stayed true to the colonial style of the hotel. We had drinks at the hotel restaurant bar and the bartender was super friendly and prompt. There is no a/c but the temperatures are not hot at all during the night and actually quite cool. The breakfast was lackluster compared to other places we've stayed, but eggs were cooked to order and the juice was fresh. The staff was super friendly and helpful and we would definitely stay here again if in town.

Hi 704kat, Great to know that you were very pleased selecting our hotel and would stay again. That says volumes about your travel experience here at the Hotel Santo Tomas. Yes, we are located 4 blocks north from Central Avenue out of the hustle , but close enough to have a three minute walk to everything. I try very hard to maintain the original decor of the hotel , so that guests may have a sense of what it was like 110 years ago being a very, very wealthy Costa Rican, The original home has 9000 sq feet, yes that is correct 9000, if you want a true taste of Costa Rica, please stay with us and for the best internet price, look directly on the hotel's web site. Such a nice review you have written 704KAT, thank you so much! Thomas

When our taxi driver pulled up to the hotel, I was wondering if this was a good idea, but upon entering, I was very happy we had chosen to stay here! It is a beautiful historical building with high ceilings and beautiful wood and tile flooring. The staff is very helpful and speak English. The owner, Tomas, is on-site and full of helpful information. We could walk to the market in San Jose. I noticed that some travelers stated that they did not feel safe in the neighborhood, but I think you would feel that way in most of the area at night if you are walking alone. We were a group of 5 - grandparents, parents and a teenager and were fine. A small cafe is on-site and the included breakfast was quite nice. Rooms are clean and a nice size. If you like to get a feel of local culture and enjoy unique, interesting places, this is a great choice. If you prefer a typical "American hotel" stay, this might not be first on your list. We only stayed one night, but would come back again. It was a great way to start our first Costa Rica visit!

Hi Sailormom, Wonderful that you and your grand-kids had a relaxing and refreshing experience here. I really do appreciate your comment s about the location. San Jose , gets a bad rap , mainly because people are just untraveled and expect Disneyland upon arrival. As you stated ( If you like to get a feel of local culture and enjoy unique, interesting places, this is a great choice.) Thank You for the outstanding review ! Keep the wind in your sails Sailormom. Stayed here twice. The best place to stay when you fly in and plan your trip around the country. And a place that feels like a second home when you come back from you adventures. The Hotel adheres to it's historic roots with antique wooden and tile floors and high coffer ceilings. The staff was helpful and very pleasant. Tomas the owner was helpful with suggestions. Thanks Santo Tomas!

Hola FPerez2013, Love your title and I look forward to a nice chat over coffee in the morning on your next visit. That is what I am constantly trying to do , provide a second home for our guests, ( me casa su casa) ! Your comment about us maintaining our Historical roots is spot on and we want clients that are looking for that Costa Rica experience, we are not a cookie cutter North American hotel, don't want to be. Fantastic review ! Thank You See you soon Thomas
