I stayed here on two separate nights in June during a two week trip to Costa Rica. It is a lovely, small hotel only a few blocks away from the main sites in San Jose and nice escape from the chaos of the city. My rooms were were clean, decently sized, and comfortable. My first room overlooked the street but traffic noise was minimal and not a problem. I spent my evenings relaxing in the courtyard by the pool with a cocktail before eating dinner at the restaurant-- a wonderful way to relax after some long, bumpy road trips. The owner and staff were welcoming and helpful with directions to the museums and local amenities. I look forward to staying here on my next trip.

Howdy Chris K, the fact you stayed two separate nights means we are doing something correct! Your comment about nice escape from the city is something almost all guest comments about, this is something I really tried to do when we built the new rooms and all of the open air and covered terraces along with the balcony rooms. It’s great you enjoyed the garden courtyard areas along with Carlos the bartender and the happy hour drinks from 4 to 7 pm. It’s always our pleasure to assist our clients in any way we can and we look forward to your next visit. Thank You very much for your wonderful comments. Thomas

Santo Tomas is a very nice hotel to stay when you are in San Jose. I have stayed there, several nights. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean. The location is also a plus, set in the heart of downtown S.J. .

Hola cabinasjimenez, as someone in the hospitality business also, I especially value your comments as you have a trained eye for details. You are correct the hotel does have a wonderful location and we offer five different room types to fit most budgets and requirements. Hope to see you again in the near future. Safe Travels Thomas

Stayed at Santo Tomas on arrival in San Jose, it was a great find.
Beautifully restored old building - we stayed in one of the balcony rooms overlooking the pool.
Nice hot tub with a slide down to the pool.
Decent WIFI.
Really helpful staff. The owner was very helpful - gave us a lift to find our hire car as we were running really late.
Due to a road being closed on our return trip - we had to leave our bags at the hotel as didnt have time to collect and make our flight - the hotel have been great in helping us get them back home.
Really recommend.
Decent restaurant also - my one critique would be that it would be cool to have more local food dishes on the evening menu, food was great though.
Cheers!

Hi chunk_pd, wonderful to hear you really enjoyed this restored historical landmark hotel. Not bad for 102 years young. The new balcony and other rooms along with the terrace areas where you stayed have been really well received and are in demand. The hot tub, swimming pool and water slide are items that no other hotel offers in San Jose and its cool that you used them! It was my pleasure giving you a ride to the car rental agency, I always wonder how everyone does after I drop them off and it is satisfying to know you had a fantastic experience at the hotel as well as in Costa Rica. Thanks for your comment about more local dishes on the menu, I am working with my chef Manuel on that, but I am very pleased that what you did eat was great. Warmest Regards
Thomas

Hi Manuthan, thank you for the outstanding review ! Your title description of a good very reasonable priced hotel with excellent service is exactly what we provide:a great value for the customer ! I have invested quite a bit in the Internet infrastructure as I know that that is one of the most important items for a traveler and it's FREE. The breakfast is something I know that is also considered and a hot cooked FREE breakfast really does have great value . Once again than you for the fine review
Warmest Regards Thomas

Set right in theheart of downtown (which can be quite intimidating for first-timers), this charming hotel has so many benefits. First, behind the gates it is an oasis -- there's a restaurant, coffee availabe 24/7, pool and jacuzzi, sitting rooms outside and in, very clean and spacious rooms (incuding blow dryer!). Second, the staff are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and helped us save time and money on our previously unplanned journey through Costa Rica. Finally, the little details the owner lovingly added to his hotel is what really made me love this place. Original sketches by Carlos Castanda on the walls, amazing local artwork, fresh flowers everywhere, hardwood floors, mahogany doors and Spanish tile. Thank you for a great start to our memorable Costa Rican journey.

Hi ToniLatino, It was great having you stay and I really appreciate that you took the time to see the Hotel's Art works and truly appreciate them. I have tried to place very interesting and unusual items all through the hotel, ranging from water color paintings, limited lithographs, hand carved statues, finely painted artworks and 3 D hand made framed pictures, comprised of local Costa Rica natural products, such as grains of rice, birds feathers, sand, rocks, coffee sacks, moss and other items artfully arranged in a typical countryside scene of everyday life of Costa Rica. I plan on photographing and placing them on my web site , something I have overlooked. We were more than happy to help you with your tour and travel planning and I am thrilled you had a wonderful experience. We are here to help anyone that requires any type of assistance. I hope you will return and continue to have fond memories of the Hotel Santo Tomas and Costa Rica. Sincerely Thomas

I really struggled to find a reasonably priced hotel in San Jose. Hotel Santo Tomas offers everything that we needed: breakfast included, free wifi, hot water, gym (a bonus). The price is great and I'd definitely stay again for the great value.

This is a quite a good hotel in the heart of San Jose.. .I did not get a chance to try the free breakfast since my flight was very early in the morning but loved the big flat screen TV in room and both wired and WIFI within the room.. Staff is friendly and fluent in English..

Hi travel2findoneself, thank you for taking the time and effort for your review. The free hot breakfast, served from 7 to 9 am you missed, consists of a Fresh fruit plate, toast, jam, fresh juice, coffee, tea, cooked eggs and gallo pinto , a local Costa Rican dish of beans and rice with spices and our home made hot sauce or a wonderful curry sauce. Also cereal is available. All served by the pool and open air garden terrace area. And you are correct we are in the heart of San Jose , just four blocks from Central avenue and most attractions. The Free Wi-Fi you mentioned is available thru out the entire hotel, all you need is the password. Your title states the atmosphere we are trying to promote - “Very Good.. .Warm and Welcoming!” Again Thank You very much for your nice review ! Warmest Regards Thomas
