“"Paradise in the heart of San Jose, CR"”

Darrylle put forth great effort into making my 21 year old daughter and I feel right at home in Casa Abierta. We felt safe, welcomed and relaxed during our stay here. Maria keeps the place absolutely spotless with plenty of yummy cookies in the freezer that we were told to eat anytime we wanted (and we did!!). Darrylle has an amazing eye for style and color. Casa Abierta looks as though an interior decorator stepped in to design the entire place, but in actuality it was all Darrylle's creative brainstorming capabilities. Darrylle even had a massage and pedicure arranged for us in his dear home with a local woman named Adalisa. Adalisa did an awesome job and was very reasonable. If you want to stay in the best place possible in San Jose, CR, this is it!!

Staying here at Casa Abierta was like home away from home, the host Darrylle is extremely knowledgable and helpful about anything you seriously need to know about the country. The accommodations were clean, safe and well secured. Great neighborhood, great restaurants in walking distance of the house, mall?? If you must !!! Plenty of ATM, near by.
Maria & Darrylle really make you feel comfort and at ease!!!
If this is your first or returning visit to San Jose, I would suggest you book your next stay here.

Room Tip: Accommodations were clean, safe and well secured. Great neighborhood,

Casa Abierta is absolutely a cozy and friendly place to stay in Costa Rica. Darrylle runs an amazing place in San Jose, and Maria makes the best fresh and home cooked breakfast. I really enjoyed my time, they made me feel like at home. Congratulations!

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet and comfortable.

Casa Abierta is absolutely amazing! Darrylle runs a very friendly, open house and he is a very interesting and engaging man. We had a fascinating philosophical discussion over a grand breakfast of cereal, yoghurt, many types of fruit, coffee, tea, juice, fried plantain, pinto, homebaked banana and papaya bread... One of the best breakfasts I've ever had! There is wifi, the most comfortable beds you'll ever come across, large spacious airy rooms and bathrooms and generally a very comfortable and welcoming feel to the whole place. The housekeeper Maria is very friendly and helpful, and she is delighted if you can manage to speak a few words of Spanish with her. If you can tear yourself away from the house it is an easy ~20 minute walk into the downtown area of San Jose. Overall I highly recommend Casa Abierta and I feel blessed to have made a new friend in Darrylle to top off my great stay.

Think San Jose and you might think crowded, edgy streets, noise, not too much in the way of architecture, in fact a distinct lack of charm. But stay at Casa Abierta and your opinion will change. The former Californian dwelling owner's love of the city is infectious; his condominium home in a small gated development is an oasis of tropical calm, the breakfasts are feasts both for the eyes and the stomach, and even if you leave before 5am as we did on two occasions he will be there to see that you won't leave hungry. His house is truly your home while you are in San Jose. It is well worth taking him up on his offer if he suggests meeting you at the airport as, along with all other addresses in Costa Rica, it's a place found more by landmarks than by street name and house number. The area is residential, safe and quiet, with an ATM that dispenses both dollars and colones just around the corner. There is a shopping mall nearby if you want to eat within 5 minutes of Casa Abierta, but if you prefer to go down town I'd suggest a pleasant stroll (Darrylle will show you the way on a street plan) of about 30 mins, and a taxi back after dark (remembering those landmarks) There are two guest bedrooms with an interconnecting bathroom, but while we were there we had the bathroom to ourselves. Perhaps our favourite day in San Jose was the Saturday we went with Darrylle and Maria, his housekeeper, to the early morning markets. We saw a side to the city we would never have discovered on our own. He also booked a tour for us which took in a coffee plantation with breakfast, a trip to Poas volcano, and a visit to the Paz waterfall gardens with lunch included all for less than $100 including being picked up and dropped off at Casa Abierta. Thank you Darrylle for all your kindness, and for your casa abierta (and apologies if, as I suspect, I've misspelt your name!)

Darryll, the owner of Casa Abierta, was waiting for us at the airport and drove us to his house in his comfortable car. In the Casa, we had a lovely bedroom upstairs, free access to the living room, a comfortable outdoor patio, houseful of fresh flowers, and use of the kitchen when needed.

The 'cocinara', Maria, makes a great breakfast. Fresh fruits - mango, pineapple, strawberry, water melon etc. We especially enjoyed the 'Gallo Pinto' (rice and beans - with plantains), as well as the home-made muffins, cookies and banana bread. There were also cereals, yogurt, juice and of course Costa Rican coffee.

A few blocks from the house is an ATM machine which dispenses U.S. dollars and Colones. A short walk further gets you to numerous restaurants and cafes. A well-stocked supermarket is about a ten-minute walk in a different direction.

If you happen to be at Casa Abierta on the weekend do not miss the Saturday Vegetable, Fruit, and Flower Market. Darryll heads out early, around 6:30 am , and you will find the market is a real feast for the eyes.

Of course, what makes Casa Abierta special is the owner Darryll. It is not just his warm hospitality but he is a man who has travelled the world. This led to an exchange of great travel stories and many interesting discussions during our stay.

Room Tip: Both rooms are beautiful, we stayed in Room #2.

After having bicycled from San Francisco to San Jose Costa Rica experiencing every imaginable accommodation from mountaintop campsites to indigineous villages to roadside "hotels", landing at Darrylle's door was a gift from Hermes himself. Truly a touch of home was apparent at every turn. From the exquisite breakfasts of fresh organic fruits and breads to the impeccable interior appointments I couldn't have felt more at home. Darrylle's broad life experiences allowed fascinating conversations with utmost curiosity of his guests. Casa Abierto defines the B&B experience.
