“I would stay again in a heartbeat!”
Reviewed March 12, 2012

My friend and I started our Costa Rican escape with a stop at Casa Abierta. The house is beautiful, the accommodations excellent, and the host fantastic. It is safe, clean, well located, only a few minutes walk to shopping, restaurants, and activities. And breakfast every morning was wonderful. Darrylle is more than a host, he will become your friend whether you stay a day or a month. He picked us up from the airport, helped us find our way around the city, let us know what was going on, and above all was a joy to stay with- we could have spent the day just chatting with him! I highly recommend Casa Abierta, and would stay with Darrylle again!

Darrylle, the host of Casa Abierta, alone makes the trip to San Jose worth it. He was so welcoming and friendly and sat and talked to us for hours over a delicious breakfast of homemade granola, fresh yogurt, local fruit and banana papaya bread. The B&B is set in a quiet gated community within about 10 - 15 minutes walking distance to the center of San Jose. The city of San Jose is vibrant and colorful, just like the people walking the streets. The accommodations are comfortable, clean, and calming. In addition to the beautifully decorated house, there is also a covered patio in the back that faces a fountain and well maintained garden. I would enthusiastically recommend Casa Abierta to anyone, and I hope I will be able to get back there again.

My Fiance and I stayed with Darrylle on our first and last night in Costa Rica (wish we were there for a week). Darrylle was immediately warm and friendly from the moment we met to the time we left. He was very accommodating. His house is gorgeous, clean and safe. The breakfast he provided was above and beyond. I cant stress enough to consider staying for more than a day or two! Thank you for the wonderful memories and friendship.

My 16 year old daughter and I planned a trip to Costa Rica, using San Jose as our base and we stayed at Darryl's home for 5 nights. The reviews had been glowing and they were accurate. Darryl was immediately warm, helpful, prompt, and friendly. He was always readily available and accommodating in a way that made you feel at home in his presence.

We were able to be fully independent, coming and going freely and yet feel the support of his presence and help. One of the special parts for us in choosing to stay with Darryl were the references to his cultural background. True to everything we had read, he had a wide range of life experience that from a parental point of view was a very special addition as he shared stories with us at in the car to and from the airport as well as at breakfast. During our stay, the others who stayed with Darryl seemed to appreciate this aspect of Darryl's person, which further enriched the experiential component.

We took two tours outside of San Jose and took a Metropoli bus to Irazu that runs on Sundays from downtown San Jose. It was a long ride, but a wonderful contrast to the tours as we were with locals and saw another side of the country as people came and went at "bus stops" on the way up and down.

One night we got some prepared foods from a grocery store near Darryl's home which was fun and brought the food back to Darryl's and journaled about the day.

All in all, it was a perfect stay and my husband, who could not join us, felt very comfortable about our safety.

Room Tip: Both rooms are great and are mirror images of one another.

We stayed with Darrylle on our last night and had a great experience. Upon arrival he served us tea and cookies and introduced us to the other guests, 2 of which were also from San Francisco so the 4 of us all went out to dinner (quick walk) to a nearby Persian restaurant and chatted about our experiences in Costa Rica. The house is really nice with an outdoor patio in a gated condo community with a guard. We had to get up really early for our flight in the morning but luckily Darrylle had food and coffee prepared for us (at 4am!) then drove us to the airport for a smooth departure. We really enjoyed talking to Darrylle on the way to the airport about his experience in Costa Rica and his other travels. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Costa Rica as it is the prefect place to begin and end your trip if you fly in to San Jose and definitely the place to stay if you are visiting San Jose.

I had a wonderful experience staying with Darrylle , not just the place that made you feel like home. The warm welcoming touch of the host is so important to me. Home made banana bread breakfast is to die for. I think I eat half of the loaf ;) My friend and I did a little long walk to downtown from this place and it was not too bad. We stayed only one night but will keep friendship forever :)
