“Pleasant stay in a good location”
Reviewed February 6, 2010

This B&B/Hotel was situated around a garden courtyard with LOTS of plants, some birds and a waterfall. The owner, Nelson, was very gracious and welcoming - and he speaks perfect English. The hotel is well situated in a pleasant neighborhood with the American Embassy, stores and banks within walking distance.
Every room has a theme - we stayed in the frog room! It was comfortable, clean and had plenty of soap & shampoos, TV, air conditioning and a stocked fridge. You can get 3 meals a day there, continental breakfast is included - their kitchen specializes in Cuban food.

My friend and I stayed at Casa Lima for a total of three nights - two at the beginning of our trip and one at the end. Although our impressions were generally favorable, there were a view issues that really negatively impacted our review.

We used Expedia to book our first two nights at the hotel and the hotel's own website to book the third. Both sites allow you to book a specific room. Expedia notes in its confirmation that your choice of room is merely a request. The hotel website's confirmation does not indicate it is merely a request, but states you have booked a specific room. On neither visit did we get the room we booked, which did not make a good impression and also lead to a really uncomfortable, somewhat testy, discussion with the owner/operator.

During the first stay we booked a specific executive suite, but were placed in executive suite 2, adjacent to the reception and dining area. We were told other guests had extended their stay, so our original room was not free. We went with the flow and stayed in the room, but were really disappointed. (I have posted pictures of both our rooms so you may see the contrast I will discuss.)

Room 2 suffers from the morning and evening noise from the dining/social area. It also has a window on this seating area that allows the light from two large fluorescent lights to enter the room even with the vertical blinds closed. Moreover, the room seems to have been made from a space that once was walled on two sides with jalacy windows. The windows remain, but have been covered over with wall board on the exterior of the room. Vertical blinds covering the two walls attempt to camouflage this. Also, the bathroom is very tiny with no surface to place any toiletries. When we attempted to use the medicine cabinet above the sink for storage, we discovered it is plastic and the door pops out of hinges when you open it. We also found the former guests' open shampoo and conditioner mini-bottles still in she shower area.

In contrast, on our second stay we booked a standard room for one night and were placed in a very nice executive suite on the second floor. The difference was startling between the two suites. It made us feel for the unlucky souls who are stuck in our first room.

More generally, the breakfast was ok, but the least impressive of any of the five comparably priced hotels in which we have stayed in Costa Rica over two trips this year. Puzzling was the fact there is a buffet table always set up in the dining area suggesting there will be some sort of choice in the morning. However, it stood empty throughout our stays with a plate of fruit and a basket of plain white rolls or sliced French bread instead provided to the table.

There is also a small bar in the lobby area, although it has no liquor license and does not serve drinks. This was a little confusing given it is decorated with liquor and wine bottles and would lead anyone to think you could have alcohol with dinner or after dinner. The bar is also pictured in the website...

If we had stayed in our second room on our first stay, had not been lead to believe we had a choice of room, access to a bar and perhaps some variety in the continental breakfast as suggested by the buffet set-up, we'd likely give Casa Lima a much higher review. When something is pictured or represented on a website, it is disappointing and causes a pause of concern when it does not ring true during a stay.

We recently stayed at Casa Lima for a week. It was in a very nice area with easy access to many tourist sites and safe enough to feel comfortable walking around the area. The staff was friendly, helpful and full of fun. It's the kind of place you just want to return to some day.

The Casa Lima is well run, friendly, has that 'at home' feeling. Good food, lovely atmosphere - it's built in a courtyard with a jungle growing in the middle - and a fine location just outside the city center. Highly recommended especially because the price is just right.

If you are flying in and out of San Jose and aren't looking to explore the city, this is ideally located for both airports. We stayed one night coming in and one night on our way out of country. Both rooms were fine, completely adequate. The Continental Breakfast was fabulous by USA standards. GREAT Cuban coffee. Fantastic courtyard with all the necessary items shopping within close walking distance. We most definitely would stay there again. 5 star perfection it is not, but what you get for this price range makes it excellent.

We were in Costa Rica visiting our youngest son who is an AFS student there. My husband, two older boys and I pretty much settled into Casa Lima for the week. It was comfortable, clean, safe, conveniently located but best of all the staff is genuinely warm and very accomodating. When we left for two days for a side trip Nelson, the owner, kept our extra luggage in his room while we were gone. When my eldest son lost his shirt in among the dirty towels it was returned to him all washed and pressed!

When we were planning our trip via e-mail Nelson was extremely reponsive answering all of my questions and getting back to me right away.

The only thing that we were not completely happy with was the early morning street noise. We had the "family suite" which meant we were on the street side of the B&B rather than looking into the courtyard. No fault of Casa Lima but the early morning noise on the street was notable.

A review on Casa Lima would not be complete without mentioning Don Kiko, the resident monkey. He hangs out in the beautiful "jungle courtyard" entertaining the patrons and attempting to bait the lizard in the next cage.
