We stayed here on arrival in Costa Rica after a long flight via the UK and Newark NJ. The first room we had was very close to reception and wasn't great, although I can see why it is used for guests who arrive really late so they don't disturb others.
The second night we moved and stayed in one called something like Cahuita in the old part of the hotel which was much better with hot water and character! We also stayed in this room before we left at the end of our trip. We paid 50$ a night which included a simple but good breakfast of fried or scrambled eggs and endless supply of coffee.
The staff, who spoke good English, were very helpful and friendly. The French owner also has Costa Rica Backpackers opposite and we used their tour guide to book trips, hire a car and change money. The guy behind reception there was really helpful.
The guesthouse is in a good position for visiting downtown San Jose, but be prepared for the noisy train that starts hooting at about 5am!
I would recommend this hotel if you want to keep your holiday costs down and it is a good base to start and finish your holiday.More
