We had such a wonderful experience at Costa Rican hotels. Unfortunately, this was not true for the Real Intercontinental. Every time we had a problem (and there were quite a few), the staff would smile, nod their heads, then do nothing. Out of a three day stay (2 at the beginning of our trip and one at the end) there was fairly hot shower water once and the rest of the time it was tepid or cold. I talked with both Mariana Hidalgo and Gilberto Gondola about the problem (after complaining again and again to the front desk staff). Mr. Gondola insisted that the water in the hotel is 60 degrees. If he is correct, it is because it is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Ms. Hidalgo did offer me two free drinks at the bar (hard to wash in those), and Mr. Gondola offered me a free bath at the spa. (Kind of like in the old days of going across town to the bath house).
On the positive side, the hotel is beautiful, the breakfast is great, and the pool is nice. But there are lots of other beautiful hotels in San Jose which serve good breakfasts and have nice pools. The restaurant "The Factory" is worth eating at. You don't have to stay in the hotel to eat there.More
