“Like a great guest house”
Reviewed February 8, 2007

My partner and I stayed at Villa Roca this January and also two years ago. Overall the place is a winner. The property is located on a steep hill so be prepared to do some walking to get to rooms/pool/hot tub. For example we stayed in the rooms near the pool. It was 5 flight of tairs to get there. From there to the hot tub (not quite ready) was another 7 + flights. Yike!

However, with that said the pool is one of the nicest I've seen with a truly spectacular view. The guests are what make Villa Roca a great gay guest hotel. It's NOT cruisy, by the way. Mostly couples but also some singles. We are in touch with 2 other couples since leaving. The gay beach (the staff will tell you where) has the best, and I do mean the best wave surfing ever. Get there at low tide and note where the rocks are . Truly wonderful.

The rooms are average at best. No clock which would be nice. The instructions on how to use the safe were terribly incorrect but the manager showed us how to use it. (much more complicated than standard ones). Staff was nice, breakfast good although they charge for for only one thing--yogurt. Not sure why but it seemed odd. The mini-bar in the guest rooms were actually priced reasonably unlike most hotels. I would like to see hotels near beaches provide beach blankets. Really BIG ones, not just a towel you can take. Would I stay here again. Yes, absolutely. The prices are fair, though more expensive than some. Unfortunately we never had a GREAT meal in Manuel Antonio. so no real recommendations there. All the foor was good, just not great. Prices are American prices for most things.
Enjoy!

Great stay, warm welcome, small and clean rooms (you are not there to sit inside, are you ?), but the piece the resistance is of course the pool: mesmerizing over breakfast about the night before and a great place to meet to see the sunset, go out and meet again in the dark after the party.
If only there was some shade during the day in the pool you never had to leave. Great place to meet people.
Women staff are a little jumpy of nude men, but who cares.

My partner & I had the pleasure of staying at Villa Roca in Jan. 2006 for my 39th birthday. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we returned to celebrate my 40th this year.

First of all, by way of description, Villa Roca sits high atop the hillsides on the road between the small town of Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. Every room has a view that sweeps down over the tropical rainforest to the blue waters of the Pacific. Some views are better than others but none will disappoint! The property is a series of stark white buildings set off by doors, trim and railings in a beautiful nautical blue color and faux terra cotta roofs. The rooms vary in size and price but are spacious and very clean. All rooms have a private (or semi private) balcony or terrace that afford great views. Each room has a fridge loaded with beer, soft drinks, water, etc., cheap! The pool has the best view on the entire property where you can wile away the day working on your tan.

Breakfast is a simple affair but more than enough to get you going. The staff are more than helpful, they are always happy to make recommendations or book tours or gay specific tours. (A hiking tour through Manuel Antonio with Gama is highly recommended!) The property is within walking distance of several good restaurants, a cab ride a little further afield takes you to several fine eating establishments. Cab rides are exceedingly cheap! A trip from Villa Roca to downtown Quepos, for example, is only about 1,500 colones (less than $3 USD).

About half the guests both this year and last were repeat customers, which is a great testament to this fine property! We're considering making this an annual event ourselves!

Of course no place is absolutely perfect so here are a few observations on some shortcomings:

First and foremost the property is in desperate need of an ice machine. The 3 ice trays in your room's fridge just doesn't cut it!

The hot tub advertised is still not ready, in spite of being under construction for a year. But in their defense the area the hot tub occupies is several meters below the pool area and a rather extensive walkway down to this garden grotto area could not have been easy to construct. It looks nearly ready, though.

Noisy construction on the property of this walkway and hot tub area plus an area where a couple of new rooms are being built is a bit of a nuisance. But it's nice to know that the German owner (who lives on site) is successful and putting money back in to the property.

But don't let any of this put you off, Villa Roca is by far the best overall gay property in Manuel Antonio. This is an exceedingly fine establishment that will exceed your expectations! Even if we don't make it an annual event we will return to Villa Roca time and time again.

First off, let me just say that this place is wonderful. My partner and I stayed here in Feb. '04, then again Feb. '06 and will be returning once again Feb. '08.
When the website says every room has an ocean view, you can count on it! We stayed in room 6 and room 2. I prefer room 6 because there is no obstruction, but room 2 has titi monkeys in the trees.
The hotel is now serving full breakfast, which was not available in Feb. '06. But, I will tell you, have the white pineapple, it's out of this world. They couldn't keep it on the table fast enough.
The staff is so friendly, especially housekeeping. Don't expect the room to be cleaned until the afternoon. How nice it is to sleep in!
The hotel can book an adventure for you with GayTours Costa Rica. We did the canopy tour in '04, extremely fun! We did the sunset cruise in '04 & '06, both times were fantastic. That is a must do! This year we also did the horseback riding. It's a good day, all day, however, be prepared for the heat. But the river swim comes at the most perfect time! I had a horse named "Rumble", need I say more? The only downside to our visit in Feb. '06 was the jetski safari. The dock worker took $100 out of my bag that they said would be safe. I informed the hotel of this, and they got our money back. So, it all worked out, just don't take any extra money. The reason why I had so much cash is because I didn't know if they wanted US$ or Costa Rican Colones. (Helpful hint: use Colones, you get a better exchange rate AND do the exchange through an ATM or the bank in Quepos, not the bank close to the hotel.)
The hotel has a beautiful infinity pool and jacuzzi. I haven't tried the jacuzzi, it was being installed in Feb. '06.
This is a great place!
The photos are from Feb. '06.
