“The Tower, the road, the sloth”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

We were quite surprised after viewing their website that the hotel is on the main thoroughfare through Quepos to Manuel Antonio Park. While this does have some convenience to it, it is RIGHT ON the highway. I live in the city and there isn't nearly that much traffic noise at my house.

The service is pretty inconsistent. Some of the staff would clearly give you a kidney if you wanted one, while some of them would not give you their pocket lint out of general disinterest.

While we were there, a three-toed sloth had taken residence above the swimming pool and there were several large iguanas wandering the grounds. They were the best feature of the hotel - not being arch, they really were cool and that's why you go to Costa Rica, yeah?

We stayed in the Tower, which was palatial, or perhaps cavernous, needlessly so for our purposes. Like a lot of Costa Rican establishments, it is only nominally indoors, with huge gaps around doors, so there are always plenty of crawly things about and cleanliness becomes a matter of perspective. The beds were like concrete slabs, though at least (like actual concrete) they did not sag.

It was a good value, particularly by the square foot, but the Tower does not tower quite like you would hope looking at their website, and it mostly towers over the highway and a neighboring hotel.

Room Tip: Tower unnecessary unless there are 10 of you.

Nice enough place located less then 5 minutes from the main beach of Manuel Antonio. We had rented the villa which was nice even thought the decor need a bit of refreshing. The small kitchen was refreshing welcome as it helps us avoid some meal at the restaurant. Staffs were very helpful and location was very secure to ensure no theft (which can be an issue in Quepos). Bed and sheets could do with a refresher. Definitely not he nicest place around but very good price/quality ratio.

We stayed here at our last stop on our Costa Rican Trip. The staff was great, especially Chip, and the resturaunt was amazing.
Most of all, it is clean and GORGEOUS, and tucked away behind trees. This is an extremely romantic place, and best of all is the Masseuse (I cant recall his name, Rodney, or Robbie--I didn't ask) whom we saw 2 separate times. He is absolutely the best!
Highly reccomended, and definetly book a massage!

Mono Azul was an okay hotel, but for $65 a night the quality didn't compare to some other places that charged less for similar quality. I also caught some mild food poisoning after eating oatmeal one morning in their restaurant. There is a souvenir shop in the lobby which was excellent and had alot of nice things to browse through. The pool area was also very nice, but we didn't use it. This hotel is not close to Manuel Antonio park..you will have to cab or bus yourself down. By bus, it's about 15 minutes including traffic.

Mono Azul...If you like jungle, monkey's, good food, nice pool's , nice staff ,nice price and nice location.. You are at the right place. In 5 min by bus you are at Manuel Anotnio or Quepos Downtown. You can take a walk and be at both place in 40 minutes. Except the breakfast too much expensive .. everything was fine !!

Chip and Jennifer, owners, have created an experience for first-time or returning visitors to the pacific coast of Costa Rica. Ask Carmen for a small fruit plate for breakfast your first day and you will be rewarded beyond measure. Melvin will prepare any tuna or mahi you catch both by grilling and a delicious sushi all his own. Rosillo will arrange any tour, taxi, or adventure in the nearby national park (Manuel Antonio) or the village of Quepos. (Be sure to get the Guacomole at the Gran Escape; also coldest Imperial cervezas in town!) Oh, please tell Chip I'll be bringing my group again next year! Pura vida!

We stayed for five days in El Mono Azul, and enjoyed our time. The only thing keeping the hotel from getting a fantastic rating was that there weren't fridges in the rooms, or access to a kitchenette. I know that the hotel is also a restaurant, but giving guests access to a kitchenette and fridges would make this a place where I could stay for a long, long time. (Caveat: The staff was more than happy to let us refrigerate a few items.) If that doesn't matter for you, then this may be right up your alley.

Note to LGBT travelers: My husband and I had no problems in El Mono Azul, or Quepos/Manuel Antonio in general.

The staff was all very friendly, the place was clean, and the sleep was good. It is right on the road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, so there's street noise - but there's nothing the hotel can do about that. I bring it up as a word to the wise. The plus side about being on the road is that there are bus stops within steps of the hotel, and really, driving a car in Manuel Antonio is more headache than it's worth.

About half way through our stay my foot was hurt pretty badly in the surf, and the owners were very helpful. They found a cane I could use, and checked up to make sure I was doing okay. There was also a steady stream of bags of ice from the kitchen for my ankle.

If you like typical American food, you'll like the restaurant. If you're like us and that doesn't tickle your fancy, there are lots of alternatives elsewhere. However, their papaya bebidas are fantastic.

The room we stayed in was nice and clean. It had a view of the pool, and of the green around the hotel. The pool was a great place to meet people, and the library is a fantastic plus.

I would definitely recommend El Mono Azul.
