“A real gem”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

Although it was a bit difficult to find (more signage would be helpful), we really enjoyed our two night stay here. With a California coastal vibe (owner Steve calls it 'shabby chic') it was charming and comfortable. The room arrangement allows for privacy, rooms are basic but clean and functional, with comfortable beds and we really appreciated touches you don't often find in hostels...high thread-count bedding, and soft bathroom tissue for example. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the common areas are so inviting, with cool breezes and comfortable seating arrangements. It's an easy walk down to the village for supplies, and upon returning a dip in the small-but-perfect shaded pool is just the right thing.
Best wishes to Steve for much success as he grows his business - he's certainly committed to the principles of Pura Vida.

Room Tip: There is only one unit with A/C, but it does cool down a little during the night and the big ceiling...

We spent there 3 lovely nights, and enjoyed every second of it. The room was comfortable and clean and the same goes for the rest of the house.
Hot water, free WiFi, free computer near the reception and a fully equiped kitchen.
The breakfasts, made by fabulous Yara, were delicious and varied every day! The staff was helpfull and very nice.
It is located about 15 mins walk from the center of Quepos. The beaches an manuel Antonio reserve are about 15 mins drive.
We had a car so the location was great for us. They offer a shuttle to Quepos every morning.
Also, they've finished the roof, so the room upstairs, that seems really nice for a couple, is quiet again.
Highly recommended!

We were impressed with Villas Jacquelina! It was really a pleasure to stay there for 2 nights. We were only staying for a night, but later in our trip we decided to go back for another night! There are different options for types of rooms and is very clean and affordable! Steve is a caring and wonderful owner and more of a host of his home to all who stay. He was extremely helpful to our trip and potential move. :) Villas Jacquelina has a very laid back, chill vibe going on. It is not a party hostel, but extremely relaxed embodying the Pura Vida lifestyle. Lots of younger people journeying all over the world to meet and enjoy as well. Great times!

We enjoyed our stay in villas jacqueline very much. Very friendly personal, a really nice pool, great kitchen and good internet. It's a 10 minute walk to the center but a nice walk and very safe. It's worth the price!

Interesting, out-of-the-way place. You're a long way from Manuel Antonio National Park (which is the only reason you'd visit this area) but you're also in a scenic, undeveloped area with its own charms.
You are in a hostel -- clean, but spartan rooms and sharing a bathroom -- but it's not a big party scene.
Owners are very friendly and relaxed, the place has a nice vibe and it's an easy place to meet other travelers.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the owners' unit -- they have small kids and are up early.

We stayed in Villa Jacquelina for five nights. Steve and his wife Mari-Cruz and their help Jara do a great job hosting travellers and make them feel at home. It is a nice, clean and safe place.
Since it is a bit out of town it is very quiet.
With the beginning of our trip we stayed here first thing, since we were so satisfied we came back for another five nights again.
We will recommend the place to our friends when they are travelling to Quepos. And we will certainly be back here.

Villas Jacquelina soars above other options in Quepos in this price range (and probably higher), for many reasons.

The staff are genuinely friendly, kind and helpful: Non-interfering but responsive to requests, ideas and needs.

The location is definitely a PLUS as it is fantastic not to be in the center of Quepos.

Where Villas Jacquelina is located is calm and green. Bird song, sunrise and sunset are a daily pleasure and they do offer a free morning shuttle so if you don't feel like walking for 10 minutes you can save on the $3 taxi fare.

I am so glad I found this place as I'd been to Quepos twice before and was not looking forward to returning to previous accommodation. VJ is not a luxury hotel but a great hostel where they get the important stuff right and for a reasonable price.

In greater detail:::

Room-wise::: My first room was the cheapest available, downstairs, clean and acceptable but with no natural light to speak of. I wouldn't recommend if you have the choice. When I decided to stay longer I was promptly moved up to the top floor, into a room with a gorgeous view that I loved.

Security-wise, you get the feeling there is nothing to worry about in that area but as I am naturally cautious I didn't leave much in the room since one window was only gauze, so if someone did want to get in it would be pretty easy (though they'd have to get past the staff).

Breakfast includes Gallo Pinto (rice and beans) most mornings, which is a simple dish but she does it particularly well, the best I tasted in Costa Rica.

Socially::: I suspect VJ is going to get exponentially busier so it may become noisier than it was when I stayed... compared to other hostels in the area it was way more relaxed and had better music (playing at low-medium volume in the kitchen)

The Kitchen::: always clean and well-equipped but may need to be expanded as more guests come.

Thanks to Esteban and Steve for all. You deserve every success.
