Long story short...Roy might be a decent commercial fisherman in his own boat, but he's no fishing guide for paying clients in a safe boat. After having gone on many adventures all over the world, this was one of the worst and unsafest experiences ever. Two of us live here in Costa Rica and 2 friends were visiting from the US. We were supposed to go inshore fishing, instead he took us out in 6-8 waves in a little boat that didn't have seats or life jackets. The two of us on the outside of the boat almost fell out on the way out and on the way back. It was funny at first because he showed no care or concern for our safety, but then it became terrifying. We paid for 4 to fish and he insisted on only 2 fishing at a time until I demanded all 4 of us fish. Two of us got sick bc of the dangerous conditions where he should have never been. That being said, one of us caught a fish, then threw up and then we demanded he go back. We offered him the full amount that we agreed on to test his character, even though we only fished less than half the time we paid for. Not being honest or offering a discount, he took it all. We didn't get our fishing license which we were supposed to and didn't get any food, etc that he offered, except 1 water to help our sick friend. I know now we were stupid to give him any money at all. We should have walked away and got it touch with the police and the tourism board to look at his "tour" boat. He also lied to us and previously said we could keep any fish that we could eat. When we caught our only fish, he demanded we throw it back. We didn't want to keep more than we could eat, but we wanted to keep that one. We are escalating this case to the proper authorities in the tourism board and other agencies. I would choose ANY fishing company over him. He has a low price for a reason. You get what you pay for.

We Had good time with Roy today. Low tide had boat stuck in the channel when we arrived. We helped Roy get the boat unstuck and off to catch bait and start fishing. We caught 3 nice snook in the 10-15lb range, 3 Small jacks (but they fight hard) and 3 saltwater catfish. Had several other runs that we did not land. Overall a fun half day fishing at a low cost. Just ate some snook tonight. It was wonderful. Expect a fishing trip with no amenities but a fun experience.

We have fished with Rudy Zapata 3 different years since 2010 and usually at least 3 times while we are there. We really love the Zapata brothers fishing, very reasonable and know how to catch the fish. When you fish with Rudy you never know what boat you will get. Sometimes you get Roy's boat and other times other boats. But you know you will get the fish that is for sure! Just let them know what type of fish you want to go after and they will take it from there. Like the other review said, nothing fancy here but you will certainly catch some great fish when you go out with the people that really know the area. Can't wait to come back!

Capt Roy and his mate Rudy (brother) are phenomenal, two local guys who have grown up here with a family that goes back generations in fishing the area. Nothing fancy here, boat is about 25' long, no cover from the sun so wear your sunscreen. Fished with them twice so far and going out again this week. Lots of fruit, sandwiches and soft drinks on board. They pick you up at the lagoon so a few rocks to climb over but no issue if you are fairly mobile. Great day, great family and extremely reasonable price wise. If you expect 5 star, go somewhere else and pay the price, if you just love fishing go here.
