“Great value for money”
Reviewed April 28, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the WMF for two nights during our trip around Costa Rica. It was actually the 7th establishment in which we have slept and so far the best one. Little more expensive than the others, but definitely worth it.

The location is very central, minutes of walk from the bus station, shops and restaurants. It is very pleasant and peaceful. It does not look like a party hostel with hordes of drunk and rowdy backpackers.

The small pool surrounded by palm and banana trees was very nice and provided a much needed refreshment.

The rooms itself are very small. Just bunk beds, two shelves and a bedsite table. Navigating through all the luggage was bit challenging, but we spent most of the time on the beach, in the town or elsewhere. The night was very hot and even the ceiling fan had a tough time. The sleep wasn't exactly pleasant, but not unbearable. However WMF also offers more expensive private rooms with A/C.

Common bathrooms were clean and functional. The communal kitchen was very well equipped and offered a massive breakfast for only $3. Above the kitchen area was a large patio with sofas and TV.

Over all - our stay at WMF was very pleasant and well worth the money. Would recommend it to friends staying in Quepos and Manuel Antonio area.

I booked a room a week ahead. It was for three days. I was told a room with bathroom was going to be 30.00 a night for a single person. So I booked it. When I showed up it turn our to be a cell. No bathroom , I when back to say I got the wrong room. As I booked a bathroom ! I was told , the room would be 45.00 a night. Way over priced for what you get. I was told by the man it was hard to find any other room in Quepos. But I could look. And after being chased by the big black dog more than once. I thought I would look around. I round a nice room at the sanchez hotel for ten dollars a night. No bathroom but it's was a nice room. So safe your money and check out the sanchez hotel. It's great for the price. I felt that the frog just try to scam me into showing up then giving me the real price. Way better prices if you look around !!!!!

We (couple, 41 & 50) stayed at Wide Mouth Frog Hostel for three nights in March 2014. We paid $50 a night for a room with private bathroom. The room was large and had two double beds (the one we slept on was comfortable), a small safebox and a small refrigerator. The room was very hot and the ceiling fan was not enough. We asked for and were given an additional floor fan which helped but it was always very hot. Air-conditioning was available in some rooms for $10 extra. The bathroom was okay. The shower had an electric showerhead but even warm water was not wanted in the hot climate. The swimming pool was okay, not as nice as in the pictures and the water was too warm to be real refreshing. The pool lounges were old and falling apart. There is a large well stocked community kitchen with free coffee and tea all day. They serve a good breakfast for $3. The wi-fi was terrible, everyone had to sit outside the office to connect; and the three free internet computers were real slow. There was a wide range of age groups and the hostel was very quiet. Restaurants, shops, ATMs and the bus station are less than one minute walking away. Buses ro Manuel Antonio National Park left every 15 to 30 minutes. For $50 our room and the hostel was expensive but seemed like an average value compares to other places in the area. Next time we will splurge on a hotel with AC closer to the park.

I thought the Wide Mouth Frog is fine, but not particularly special or fantastic as noted in the Lonely Planet guide.

The good:
The beds are comfortable. The atmosphere is nice. The weather was extremely hot and the ventilation in the rooms is poor, so many guests relax in the common areas. The pool is wonderfully refreshing. The location in downtown Quepos is fine (although Quepos itself is considered unsafe at night). The upstairs lounge area with a TV and hammocks is a nice touch. The kitchen is nice because it is large and facilitates 5+ people cooking at the same time. The breakfast costs US$3 and it was slightly above average.

The average:
The service and the value of the hostel was average. Private rooms in other hostels cost the same amount of money with nicer facilities.

The less good:
Ventilation in the rooms was quite poor. An electric fan was provided, but unfortunately it was inadequate and the room was still stiflingly hot.
The bathrooms were not as clean as other hostels. The men's shower area smelled and the sinks usually did not have soap.
The book exchange costs $1 + 1 book in order to receive 1 different book. This was the first time I have ever seen a book exchange that was not completely free.
The laundry service at the hostel was very expensive compared to the laundry service 1 block down the road. The hostel did not allow washing your own clothes in their sinks.

I stayed for two nights in a private room with a shared bathroom for 35$. The grounds are well cared for and there are a lot of beautiful plants. the community space was great for my yoga self practice. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking and they offer a big breakfast in the morning for 3$. The laundry service was fast. It's right down the street from the bus station also making it convenient to get to Manuel Antonia National Park.

The staff was friendly and very helpful in recommending and booking our excursions. They served a genuine Costa Rican breakfast of Gallo Pinto, fruit, coffee, toast, etc. for only $3. One of my favorite parts having people from so many countries staying at the same hostel--overheard a lot of German and French. You get to enjoy the city of Quepos, and a short, cheap bus ride away was Manuel Antonio.

When we weren't out snorkeling or hiking through Manuel Antonio, we kicked back and relaxed at the hostel by the swimming pool or TV room. Also had three dogs, which made the hostel really homey.

If I go back to Quepos/Manuel Antonio, I would definitely stay in Wide Mouth Frog again.

Room Tip: They have dorms, private rooms and private rooms with bathroom.
