We stayed at Kayak Lodge two nights. Our arrival was a bit early in the day, so the owner, Bernard, was kind enough to recommend some things to do (mangrove tour in kayaks, and the Rainmaker sanctuary). Both Bernard and his wife, Marlene, are very helpful, friendly, and kind.

We stayed in the building near the kayaks and it was great -- big, and two big beds. New looking bathroom. All immaculately clean. Small and beautiful pool for cooling down.

Manuel Antonio park is about 15-20 minutes away, and is a really simple drive. GPS finds the Lodge very easily, too.

We stayed for two nights at the Kayak Lodge. From the Lodge we travelled to the Manuel Antonio National Park (around 30 min). The Lodge can be easily reached by GPS. Breakfast was very good. We also had an excellent dinner in one of the nights of our stay. We took a Kayak trip from the Lodge, which was a wonderful experience- highly recommended. Following the Kayak trip we could have a late check out- this is a must since it is recommended to take a shower following the Kayak trip. The WiFi is good - better in public areas than in the room. Getting into the swimming pool following the Kayak trip was excellent.

Trying to locate this place by GPS was impossible. Luckily they have a huge sign on the main road. You drive off the main road back through a Palm Grove to the property. Very quiet and in amongst some other homes and businesses. Just like much of Costa Rica, everything is behind locked gates. I felt very safe but many would feel the lack of lighting would make you nervous. They have rooms on both sides of the street (just about wide enough for 2 cars) and the rooms are huge and beds were very comfortable.

I wanted to take the Kayak trip but was sick so I couldn't make it. Breakfasts were tasty and always fresh fruit and coffee waiting for you.

The ultimate question is: Would you stay there again? Absolutely!

Room Tip: They will show you the room before you settle in. If you don't like it, they will move you if t...

Room Tip: all on the ground floor and similar

We recently had the pleasure to spend 8 days at the Kayak Lodge. I chose the lodge based on the reviews it received especially about the staff. They managed to far exceed my wildest imagination.

We arrived in the pouring rain to be greeted by Bernard, the owner and gentleman I had been communicating with via e-mail for a number of months in the planning of our trip. Bernard was on his way to San Jose for the duration of our trip but wanted to make sure he was able to meet us. We were immediately introduced to his amazing wife Marlene the true proprietor and Tobias the hotel manager. They became our close friends during our trip.

We were the only guests staying at the lodge (August is not the popular season). While in same places that may not bode, well for us it was a dream. We felt as if we had rented out the entire lodge. We were upgraded to the most amazing suite. 2 bedrooms, living area with sleeping for 3 more, full kitchen and sliding doors that lead you right out to the mangroves.

Every day we would be visited by two iguanas who came early and stayed late, but most exciting were the daily visits from the monkeys. Anywhere between one or two all the way up to 18 monkeys would come and play on the porch everyday. Feeding them by hand was one of the highlights of every day.

Marlene and Tobias (along with his wife and 2 daughters) became like extended family. Every day the breakfast was fresh and delicious, and accompanied by the wonderful company of our hosts. Tobias even brought us Lychee's and flowers from his own garden.

They arranged all the tours for us and did a great job. When we took a boat ride in the mangroves, we were joined by our Kayak family which made it even more enjoyable. The following day Marlene treated us to a wonderful kayak tour of the mangroves. As her English is not the best she hired a guide (Jorge who was also our guide in the rainforest). It was one of the most enjoyable experiences.

I cannot say enough great things about the Kayak Lodge and the amazing Marlene, Tobias and the rest of the Kayak staff. We would go back tomorrow if we could.

Really liked this place. The people running this place are the nicest people I've ever met on vacation, and they really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They are probably about 15 minutes from manuel Antonio, and I would definitely recommend renting a car if staying here. There is nothing within walking distance except for a small store. The food in the restaurant was excellent, and inexpensive. We ate there once a day every day we were there.

This place is great if you're looking for a low key place to stay when not at the beach. My fiance and I spent most of our stay on the beaches, and relaxed at night at the hotel. They also have a small pool, which was great to relax in if you need a break. It's place is certainly not a 5 star resort with a great view, but it was exactly what we were looking for...a small place with good food and great hosts that were within driving distance of the beach.

The one down side, in the newer rooms, the doors are glass and when you lock them, they are locked from both sides. Not a big deal, but not your typical hotel set up where you can unlock from the inside without a key. Also, when you open the door, The AC shuts off, so the rooms gets hot during the day, and you can't run the AC on unless you stay in the room so the first 10 minutes or so are a pain...but it's 10 minutes, and if you're the type to get crazy over a warmer than usual 10 minutes while on vacation you're probably not looking at inexpensive hotels in Costa Rica.
