We decided to stay in Damas as this was our 4th trip to CR, but never stayed in the Quepos area. We came across the Kayak Lodge w/good reviews and found the thought of kayaking in the mangroves appealing, as we kayak here in CO. OMG from the first minute of stepping into the compound we were mesmerized. First of all being that close to the mangroves is amazing!! Upon arrival, we heard classical music filling the air, and the beautiful pool's waterfall in the background. We were about to meet the famous Bernal and Marlene, I couldn't wait to see what everyone on Trip Advisor was talking about. OMG - I finally get it, it is all true!! While we never got to meet Bernal, (he was in San Jose on business), we truly got the "sweetie pants" Marlene treatment. I can see why everyone falls in love with her upon meeting. She marched us down to the big house as this is where we would be staying, an "upgrade" from the one room initially reserved. This house is right on the mangrove's, I can't even explain how interesting it is to stay this close to the mangrove's and watch the tide come in and out, not to mention kayaking to Damas Island right out your door. Every morning we sat under the outdoor patio for breakfast, and each day a special interesting treat was waiting for us, one morning we sampled cashew (sp) juice, another morning a sample of Guanabana (sp) fruit, the third morning Bernal happened to call while we were at breakfast and he asked to talk with us. He wanted to thank us for staying at their Lodge, I also got the chance to ask the history of the house we were staying in. He said, Marlene and himself lived in it in the beginning, and later switched it to a rental. We will definitely come back to the Kayak Lodge as it is an interesting country within a country, and Marlene is the icing on the cake.
