“Marlene a true "sweetie pants"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2012

We decided to stay in Damas as this was our 4th trip to CR, but never stayed in the Quepos area. We came across the Kayak Lodge w/good reviews and found the thought of kayaking in the mangroves appealing, as we kayak here in CO. OMG from the first minute of stepping into the compound we were mesmerized. First of all being that close to the mangroves is amazing!! Upon arrival, we heard classical music filling the air, and the beautiful pool's waterfall in the background. We were about to meet the famous Bernal and Marlene, I couldn't wait to see what everyone on Trip Advisor was talking about. OMG - I finally get it, it is all true!! While we never got to meet Bernal, (he was in San Jose on business), we truly got the "sweetie pants" Marlene treatment. I can see why everyone falls in love with her upon meeting. She marched us down to the big house as this is where we would be staying, an "upgrade" from the one room initially reserved. This house is right on the mangrove's, I can't even explain how interesting it is to stay this close to the mangrove's and watch the tide come in and out, not to mention kayaking to Damas Island right out your door. Every morning we sat under the outdoor patio for breakfast, and each day a special interesting treat was waiting for us, one morning we sampled cashew (sp) juice, another morning a sample of Guanabana (sp) fruit, the third morning Bernal happened to call while we were at breakfast and he asked to talk with us. He wanted to thank us for staying at their Lodge, I also got the chance to ask the history of the house we were staying in. He said, Marlene and himself lived in it in the beginning, and later switched it to a rental. We will definitely come back to the Kayak Lodge as it is an interesting country within a country, and Marlene is the icing on the cake.

Bernal and Marlene are the nicest hotel owners I have ever seen! They make you feel special there, and try their best to make your trip go as smooth as possible. the facility is not a fancy five star, but their hospitality makes it all up! It was a highlight to see the white faced monkies right outside of our room windows. We've traveled to more than 30 countries, but this is one of the best! My daughter had so much fun that she did not want to come back.
I strongly recommend kayak lodge.
Bernal and Marlene, we miss you! May

Quiet, peaceful, friendly with excellent hosts. when i went away for a tour and came back they welcomed me back and were interested in how my tour had went. Bernard took me to the butterfly garden, showed me a place to eat and how to take the bus back and when it didn't work out and i called him he came to pick me up with no problems. i have done much travelling and no where in the world have i stayed with a Bernard and Marlene. they are simple the best. the food was wonderful and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. the place was very safe, didn't even have to lock our doors while we walked around everything felt so secure. Bernard took me on a kayaking tour of the mangroves which was so peaceful and relaxing. thank-you Bernard and Marlene i will definitely tell others of my stay there.

My partner and I (gay) had a wonderful time here. The owners are wonderful nice people and made us feel like family each and everyday of our stay. We tended to sleep in everyday, and yet we had our breakfast made to order fresh and hot without question or complaint. Oh, and it was included in the price of the room. The area is in a residential area and quiet, surprisingly. The owner took us on a private Kayak tour of the mangroves; of course at cost. This was truely a time to be at one with nature and one's soul. It was so nice and beautiful. You will need a rental car to get around from here as it is about 15 mins drive outside of Quepos and a 20-25 min walk to the main road to catch a bus. The neigborhood is poor but safe and the property is totally secure, never worried about safety. The room was of nice size for two and very clean. We will never forget out stay there. We did get to feed the monkeys too. My partner did, I was affraid having seen one too many shows of "When Animals Attack", LOL.

The Kayak Lodge was the highlight of my trip to Costa Rica. I have been to Costa Rica twice and no other hotel, hostel, or lodge can compete with the hospitality that is offered at the Kayak Lodge. We woke up to a lovely breakfast of local fruit, gallo pinto, eggs, juice, and coffee while watching the native white faced monkeys play. The lodge is located right on the mangroves that lead to Isla Damas. The rooms were very spacious, spotless, environmentally conscious, and boasted a huge shower! The swimming pool is gleaming, perfect temperature, and sported a relaxing cascading waterfall. While enjoying the sun and water, our hosts Marlin and Bernard kept our thirst at bay by keeping the Imperials coming. :) They were the best hosts I have ever had, and I have traveled extensively. The flora surrounding the lodge is breathtaking. I even got to witness a hummingbird sitting in his perfect red nest on two little white eggs. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this lodge. Don't miss out on this experience!!!!

Room Tip: Close to the beach. I was in room 9, it had a fridge, not all of the rooms come with one.

If you are going to Costa Rica for the nightlife and excitement, then do not stay at the Kayak Lodge. The rooms are clean and cool with quiet days and nights. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. We wished that we had more time there than just the week we stayed. The food was simple but tasty. Hasil our waitress spoke very little English but we managed to make ourselves understood by pointing at the well organized menu. She showed us a hummingbird's nest in one of the trees. It looked like it was made from pink candy. We made a trip out through the mangroves by kayak to Damas Island and had an entire beach to ourselves. A man came out with a wheelbarrow full of young coconuts and peeled them with a machete. We drank and ate four of them. We tried to offer him some money but he refused. We had a large lunch with cold Imperial beer for about $16. There was too much food to finish. The mosquitos were not bad at all even without repellent during January. We managed to see herons, monkeys, iguanas, toads, and red crabs. We missed the alligators though. One night, Bernal brought out some parrafin powered balloons. Each couple held on to the ballon until it filled with enough hot air to rise. The couple would then make a wish and release the balloon. Each balloon actually travelled a different direction after being released, so maybe there is something to it. Bernal and Marlene talked with us daily and made sure that we were enjoying our stay without being intrusive. Wireless is available and a computer is available if you do not bring your own. The AC was excellent and there is very hot water available. Our room was even upgraded since we made reservations a month in advance and a better room was available. If you want to truly vacation and take it slow somedays and have adventures others, then find the Kayak Lodge on the net and make arrangements to stay as long as you can.
