First off, i have to add that the home is great. Well kept, clean and in a nice tropical location. It is well appointed for a family and laid out well. But i also have to add that the owner is a bit "overzealous" with her property, bordering on kind of disturbing.
Like a lot of properties in Costa Rica, the owner lives on the property. She is an older german lady who has owned it quite a while if not the entire time. I believe she built it if i remember one of her stories.
But as one of the other reviewers mentioned, she really laid into us when we returned from and an excursion in the afternoon only to find her knocking on the door and coming right in within 2 minutes of us returning. She wanted to let us know that we had left the air conditioner on when we left. not all of them, just the one in the main room. Coming from a dry climate, i was not used to the unbelievable humidity. we just wanted to room to be cool when we got back as it takes a while for the unit to cool with the small AC unit hanging over the window. Its just a portable AC so it runs long to cool the main area of the unit. She said that we could not have the AC under 20 degrees and that 17 was not allowed. she said that she did not want to pay for the electricity to run the unit all day when we were gone and that it will destroy the home. she knows its on because she monitors the drains. I understood and complied but she really was upset. not the best people skills. I really do not think she liked the notion of us leaving it on all night.
also we had some friends stop in while they were in town for the night and she instantly barged in again in the morning to let us know that if we had more people in the home than listed we would have to pay extra. We were there a full week and they stayed one night. she was livid that our friends did some laundry with ours (a backpack full)...she called us on it because she went through the wash and found womens clothes (panties) and we did not have any women in our party. She actually held up the undergarments to prove it wasn't our laundry. Its like we were getting scolded by my grandma.
We just sort of felt like we were being watched and always on the cusp of doing something wrong. Dont park there, dont hang that there, you cant wash that, dont leave that on and ants are normal, its a jungle.
I would recommend the place because it is nice and kept. it is hard to get to via taxi and some taxis will not go into the area because they need to be 4x4. they drop you off up the road for a wicked walk. the walk to the beach is definitely a long one and a trek uphill on the way back, but doable for the fit person. wifi was hit and miss but available. i felt a bit intimidated to ask her to reboot the router knowing how our stay started.
she definitely does not have any privacy boundaries and will walk into the home when she wants with little warning (knock knock, shes coming in...). It is her place but we are guests and pay for the use of the place and expect to have boundaries met. i do not believe she understands those boundaries maybe because of her age or high expectation of her guests and wild "house rules".
