“A true Oasis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2012

I recently spent 3 nights in Apartment 3 of Villa Kristina, and it was truly a slice of heaven.

The Villa sits towards the end of a hilly, gravel road that is about a 10/15 minute walk to the main road where you can catch a bus right on the corner, or a taxi, to downtown Manuel Antonio or Quepos. The location is off the beaten path compared to many hotels in the area. For us, this was quite welcome, as the apartments provided real serenity and amazing wildlife that you wouldn't find at the hotels located in the touristy Manuel Antonio strip.

The landscaping of the grounds is real gorgeous, and looks out over a steep incline to the tropical forest. The pool and jacuzzi were a real treat as well. We were psyched to see all kinds of wildlife- including sloth, two kinds of monkeys, toucans, hummingbirds and bats- right from the terrace. We actually saw more wildlife here than in Manuel Antonio park!

Apartment 3 has a spacious terrace, with comfortable seating, a hammock, intimate lighting and even a ceiling fan to provide a little breeze. The apartment itself was very clean and nicely decorated. The bathroom shower was plenty hot if at a lower pressure (not like you even wanted a hot shower in that warm weather!), and the washing machine in the bathroom was an added plus.

We enjoyed having the kitchen, as there was only one restaurant in close walking distance of the apartment, and was a nice way to save money as Manuel Antonio dining is a bit more expensive than other parts of the country. There was a small grocery store within walking distance, and many more in town.

The only caveat I can remember to note - Kristina's dogs were prone to rather annoying yapping and barking at weird hours of the day.

I definitely hope to return here again someday!

Room Tip: Apartment 3 is best for 1-2 guests

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of staying here for 2 nights and it truly was a pleasure! Upon arrival, as we were getting out of the car, Kristina warmly greeted us and immediately directed us to the back yard/pool area and shined her flashlight up in a tree to reveal a sloth sleeping there. We had been to nearby Manuel Antonio and had seen a sloth WAY up in a tree, very difficult to see even with my long lens, but this one was right there and more than filled my viewfinder so got some excellent photographs. There were monkeys and various birds all around on her VERY lush, beautifully landscaped property as well, so it truly felt like being in the rainforest. We had Apartment 2 which had a lovely patio/balcony with a full set of outdoor furniture, lamps, magazines, and a hammock and a view of the Pacific Ocean, a perfect place to relax and unwind. Inside was warm and cozy, nicely decorated, and felt like home. Kristina provided for our privacy but made herself available for anything we might want or need. We didn't use the pool but it, the hot tub, and the pooldeck were spotless and so inviting. She built this place herself, and she really achieved what she had in mind: a cozy place to stay and relax and have peace.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the ocean and lush landscaping, so there's not a bad room on the property.

The 4 days we spent at the Villa Kristina were without any doubt the most beautiful, relaxing, intense days during our whole 3 weeks vacation in Costa Rica.
We discovered the Villa by accident, on our way out of the much too expensive Manuel Antonio, terribly frustrated that we could find no accomodation for less than 300 dollars/night. While driving on the narrow road on the way to the Villa Kristina, shortly before sunset, I was thinking 'no way we'll find something acceptable at the end of this road'. How wrong I was! At the end of this road was Paradise. Kristina was so friendly and welcoming, she gave us right away the upper suite and I just couldn't believe our luck. Two floors of pure luxury, fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 terraces, a living room, in the middle of the Garden of Eden, with an incredible view of the ocean! The villa is beautifully decorated, with so much care for detail, it makes you want to stay there for good... The location was so beautiful, that I couldn't wait to wake up at 5:30 every morning, go to the terrace and just enjoy the nature coming back to life with the sunrise. There was such an icredible view from both terraces: dozens of monkeys making their way from tree to tree, countless birds, humming birds, 'pura vida' in its purest form. The swimming pool is also a highlight. The water is very clean, and swimming in the middle of the garden with a view to the jungle is just fantastic... for an European. It was so nice at the villa, that we spent one whole day just there, not going anywhere, enjoying the perfect wellness day. If we ever go back to Costa Rica, we'll make sure to organize our trip so that we can stay most of the time at Villa Kristina.

Had two families stay in two apartments. Great location, great views, wonderful pool, great hostess. Kids had a great time. Layout of top apartment is fun with loft/suite that is perfect for kids. Sat on porch and watched two groups of monkeys pass by house each moning and evening. Hiked up road past Villa Kristina and down trail through tropical forest to ocean. Trail was moderately difficult but saw lots of wildlife. Very native experience. Last bit of gravel road to Villa Kristina is sketchy but we made it fine in compact fwd Nissan versa. Just need to keep up speed on way out - if you start to spin out, simply back down and take another run. Part of the adventure! Would definitely like to come back.

One of the best hotels we have stayed at. Peaceful, private, quiet, fully equipped, friendly attention.

If you complain is because you brought your problems along with yourself.

Totally recommended. We will be back anytime.

Tack så mycket Kristina

What a lovely place! I highly recommend it to those in search of a quiet, surrounded by nature place. Good Value as well.

There is only one issue; be aware that the owner, Kristina, does comes and goes inside the apartments without any previous consent. She came inside the apartment twice in two days without really asking first. By the time we noticed that she wanted to come in, she was already in the middle of the apartment.
The reason I gave it four dots is for the lack of politeness from the owner. Rather than that! A great place!
If you don't like dogs, there are at least three always with Kristina, so they go where she goes.

Room Tip: "Tell Kristina to make sure she asks, and gets an answer before coming inside the apartment&quo...

My boyfriend and I just returned from 8 days at Villa Kristina. It was our first time to Costa Rica. We were more than happy with our stay. The apartment we stayed in was clean and comfortable. We went during a rather rainy portion of the season so having a full apartment was great (we didn't want to kill each other once!)

Kristina went above and beyond to set up cabs and tours for us (neither of us speak much Spanish so she was able to negotiate lower prices on tours, etc which was nice!) She also dried our laundry for us and made the bed/gave us fresh towels every day.

I'd suggest speaking with her and letting her know when you're going to arrive. We were "taken" our first day there as the cab driver totally overcharged us. Being unfamiliar with the trip, we didn't realize it until we mentioned it to Kristina. She said that she'd be more than happy to arrange a ride from town to the Villa. She also very nicely asked her helper to take us to the beach at Playa La Macha. It was a bit of a trek but totally worth it.

Two small notes: a) the villa is a secluded. We LOVED this, however, it did mean that coming back at night meant we needed to take a cab as the walk is a bit dark. This doesn't cost more than $3-5 USD per trip, so it wasn't a problem for us - just a heads-up to be ready for it. (also, we loved that it was secluded - it felt much more comfortable anyway, so it's totally not a negative!).

b) the shower does not get very warm. Again, this is NOT a negative (it's kind of nice to have a cooler shower when it's hot out!) but just something to note.

All in all, we highly highly recommend staying at Villa Kristina. It's well worth the money and you'll truly enjoy your entire experience. We're planning on returning to Villa Kristina with a group for the other, larger apartment. Thanks for a great stay!
