I went to Puntarenas after 20 years more or less... and I have to say it is changed food good! The beach is clean and they are building a very cool malecon and a lighthouse, there are many restaurants, some bars, sodas y chinamos where you can buy from costarrican candys and food to many kinds of souvenirs.
About the hotel, it is very nice, rooms are no more than we needed, AC, two beds, tv, a small refrigerator and shower. Building is nice, well maintained, the pool area is very very nice, with palms and fruit trees like cad and carambola (that you can steal!). It is far enough to be quiet but not much to be away from the restaurants. The personal were very kind and helpful as well.
If you are looking for a place to rest without getting bored this is the place!

This hotel is beautiful, clean and quiet. It's french Canadian owned since 2008, totally remodeled with nice garden and green areas, clean pool, room with a/c, hot water, T.V. and small refrigerator. No restaurant yet, but they have cold drink(soft and alcoholic) and free coffee. We had VERY good time.

My husband and I stayed here so that we could catch the early ferry to the Peninsula. The hotel is safe, clean, and the staff were friendly. It was apparent that people only stay here to catch the morning ferry! The hotel could use an upgrade, but people only stay there for a few hours, and it serves its purpose!

A previous review for this charming little hotel refers to it as a resort and makes other statements that indicate that the reviewer is confused about which property she is reviewing. THIS is a small little hotel in the CITY of Puntarenas (many, many reviewers on this board do not realize that there is a CITY of Puntarenas, a DISTRICT of Puntarenas, a CANTON of Puntarenas, and a PROVINCE of Puntarenas. They are not the same things or places!)

Hotel La Punta is near the western end of the peninsula (actually a sand spit) on which the CITY of Puntarenas sits. The hotel could never be mistaken for anything anyone might consider a "resort." It is nothing special, but it IS secure, clean and pleasant, and certainly serves it principle purpose, which is to provide a place to stay for late arrivers who intend to take the ferry, which is very nearby, to the Nicoya Peninsula the next day.

My husband and I went to Hotel La Punta for our honeymoon in May 2003. This is really a resort for those who are more adventurous than those who want a spa or to be pampered.

There is one thing to keep in mind when you go here...it is the jungle. We had to move out of our first room, because it was infested with ants. The staff was very nice about our move. The room are okay...very basic.

I did not care for any of their buffets, but the food on the menu was incredible! I still crave it to this day. We did not eat one bad meal off the menu. Having dinner on these open patio restaurants with the topical rainstorm pounding down was amazing. The wait staff was great.

The front desk was very helpful with arranging day-trips and tours. There is a little general store which was nice.

The beach was untouched and pristine. It was great to see hermit crabs and iguanas just out in the open. They had well maintained trails in the rainforest and wild life was all around. We even saw a couple of Toucans on our last day.

When we went in May, we really had the resort to ourselves (it is the start of their rainy season), except on the weekend when they let the locals in and it is very busy. It would be a great place for kids and fairly safe, but for a honeymoon it sometimes lacked the romantic factor, but it was still very fun!

P.S. The people of Costa Rica or beautiful and warm people that are very proud of their country and eager to share with vistors.
