A deep (or high) cut above the average Hostelworld fare and well worth the extra colones. It is set in a magnificently restored wooden mansion dating from 1920, replete with wooden louvres, wrought iron balconies and apparently 49 doors! It offers a view of the bay (with resident crocodile) from one side and the pretty Parque Victoria from the other. The verandah with its rocking chairs is great for people-watching. Michael and his wife are brilliant hosts and serve a healthy, fruity breakfast.
Puntarenas is not a first choice for tourists but as a living, working, Costa Rican town with no pretensions, it's well worth a stay.
