Boca Sombrero

I spent a week on a yoga and surfing retreat at Boca Sombrero, and came back a new man. The Osa and Puerto Jimenez are truly remote, so you are really, really on a retreat. I shared the Casa Troya, a unique and beautiful hardwood and thatch structure, from which you can see the surfers in action. No alarm clock needed - monkeys woke us in plenty of time for coffee and yoga, followed by breakfast 2. (That was a theme - two of every meal.) The food was delicious, varied and healthy. The yoga pavilion is well-built and well-equipped. Our hostess, Monica, is kind-hearted and resourceful woman, who went above and beyond helping out her guests. In my case, she connected me with Federman R., a dependable and detail-oriented guide and driver in San José.

I just got back from a week-long retreat at Boca Sombrero and could not have better things to say about it. The setting is gorgeous - right on the beach, with great gardens and trees everywhere, hammocks and other lounge areas scattered throughout, and two pools. The jungle cabanas were surprisingly comfortable, and the bathroom/showers were all I needed. The yoga deck was such a peaceful place, with a view of the ocean through the trees.
The staff was the best part - Monica handled everything we could have needed, Luke and Lily are phenomenal cooks and were very friendly and helpful, and Axel was a great surf teacher and was fun to talk to. The excursions we took were all simple and well-planned. The spa and massages were really nice.
The whole week was amazing - I didn't have to worry about anything, and always had friendly help whenever I needed it.

I stayed in one of the jungle cabins for 2 weeks and it was amazing. The jungle cabins are a great 'glamping' affordable option as a way to stay in Costa Rica. They are clean and stay dry and pretty cool.

It is so great to be close to the beach and to have hammocks and the yoga deck. I went as part of a yoga retreat where they fed us AMAZING food 4 times a day. Then I stayed on as a guest and enjoyed teh continental breakfast every day.

Also the staff is super-duper friendly and accommodating - doing whatever they can to help the stay be as comfortable as possible.

Two weeks right on the beach in Casa Troya. Located in paradise. Obviously better than great.
So lets focus on some informative things:
We stayed in january with 32c and sunshine every single day.
The Boca Sombrero property with its 5 houses + Yoga studio (ok privacy, not too close to the other houses) is located approx 30 min from Puerto Jimenez. (Have in mind: the road is extremely bumpy. We had a decent Nissan King Cab 4x4 that we've driven on jungle roads before, but the stretch between the house and Puerto Jimenez was the worst to drive on. Surprisingly the road gets better towards Carate.)
There is 2 places to go and eat, both offer good food considering the location right in the middle of nowhere, and both are walking distance from Sombrero.
If you're in Puerto Jimenez to shop some groceries, go for lunch at the Fish Taco place in the harbor.
There is no Internet in the houses, Wireless Internet is located in the main house where the staff/owners are hanging out.
You won't find many Costa Ricans out here as the place is claimed by Germans and Americans.
However there isn't that many people out here to begin with so you'll find yourself walking the beach all by yourself.
If you're going to Corcovado, take the plane from Puerto Jimenez to Sirena Station and explore the primary forest from there. It's worth it. The other option is to drive for 2 hours and hike for 9 hours.

If you have a chance to go here, go.

During our recent yoga retreat to Boca Sombrero one thought kept running through my head ... that I'd landed in the pages of a "Travel and Leisure" feature story. The Boca compound is naturally elegant while still rustic enough to make you feel as if you're at a very special adult camp. All of the amenities needed for creature comforts are here. But the real show is watching monkeys swing through the trees, scores of tiny hermit crabs twirl about the beach sand, birds skimming the waves at sunrise and eye-popping flowers bloom in abundance. You're fully open to experience these marvels fueled by Lily's delicious home-cooked meals made with local ingredients, refreshed by sleep in comfortable beds with soft sheets and stoked by Axel's enthusiasm for surfing and playing! Monika knits it all together with her gracious hospitality and creating a family atmosphere that's welcoming to all. Thank you Boca Sombrero for this incredible getaway!!!

Room Tip: We stayed at the Troika house which included a wonderful porch area on the path to the surf deck. Pe...

Boca Sombrero provided an idyllic secluded holiday. Let the sound of the waves put you to sleep, wake up to monkeys and macquaws playing in the trees, grab a coconut off a tree and put it in the fridge to chill while you surf out from the front door or go for a morning walk along the empty beach. The beautifully designed houses and garden are privately tucked away but only a stone throw from the sand. We'll be back for sure.

I have stayed at Boca Sombrero twice now and have enjoyed my stay thoroughly. The jungle cabins are affordable clean and comfy and the amenities and food at the main house are fabulous. The food especially is incredibly delicious and healthy.

All of the staff are helpful and friendly They help make arrangements for outings and will do whatever they can within reason to help guests have a wonderful stay.

The grounds are teeming with the beauty of nature- jungle, river, beach - simply amazing! If you go to the Osa I encourage you to stay here, you won't be sorry :-)
