Delightful decor, friendly staff, quality appliances, beautiful beach access. I would say prefect with one requests and one comment. They could really use a fan overhead of the bed for those nights when the sea breeze is still and the humidity is high. The other factor is for travelers to be aware that the roads are rough but this is part of the adventure of this part of the world. 4-wheel drive is a must. But a winner of a place!

I came to Boca Sombrero as part of a New York yoga studio's annual surf and yoga retreat. Having been to Costa Rica several times before, I knew of its raw beauty, but until you experience life on the Osa Peninsula, you really have not seen the unbridled "nature" that makes Costa Rica one of the most biologically diverse and amazing spots in the world.

Boca Sombrero was the perfect spot to host a retreat like ours. We had seven days of nearly ideal surf, and 4 hours of yoga on a platform wedged between lush trees, with a view to the endless ocean horizon. When your body was aching and could take no more physical activity, you found sustenance via the tantalizing meals cooked by Lily and her sous-chefs. Each meal was better than the last, with freshly baked breads, delicious house-made salad dressings, and mahi-mahi freshly caught mere hours beforehand.

Monika was a lovely host, making sure that everyone was happy and comfortable. When we told her that our house needed bed fans, she promptly provided us with them. We stayed in Casa Troya, which is the closest house to the surf beach. It is an open air, two story home, with a huge kitchen, an outdoor shower with warm water, and four beds in mosquito-netting on the upper deck. Troya, and its sister home, Rio Sombrero, are the two most "luxurious" homes on the property. Rio Sombrero seems a bit more elegant (remember, elegant in a very rustic sense) than Troya, but Troya makes up for it in architectural charm.

The entire Boca Sombrero property is one of a kind and a truly special spot, in part because of the Osa Peninsula and in part because of the people running it. However, a word of warning to city dwellers use to Aman Resorts or the St Regis, if you are looking for eco-luxury Boca Sombrero may not be the resort for you. You might be better off at somewhere like Lapa Rios up the road. However, if your chosen dinner attire includes a headlamp and flip flops; and howler monkeys and breaking surf lulls you to sleep, then there may be no more ideal locale for you in the world.

Our yoga retreat was at this resort in February. Not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful stay.
Monika was a great host and took care of everything we needed. In fact, all of the staff was exceptionally kind and mindful. Angus and Luke, our super hot chefs, created amazing meals every breakfast and dinner. Lunch was less formal and usually included left overs, but still so good. They were very accommodating to anyone having dietary requirements.
The yoga platform was beautiful and within earshot of the ocean. Our huts were cozy and included some cushions on the porch. Bath areas were shared between 2 huts. It was pretty cool to shower out in nature with just enough privacy.
Even though there were 20+ of us on retreat, you could always find a quiet place to yourself. We always had options for outings, surf lessons, spa treatments, massage or just lounging about.
It was great to be in such a beautiful place and truly not have a care in the world.

Room Tip: There are also houses available for rent. Those would be perfect if needing a more intimate space...

Boca Sombrero on the Osa Peninsula is a perfect slice of paradise if you are looking to unplug and live off the grid! My girlfriend and I stayed in Casa Troya (designed by Walter) a beautiful bamboo house located approximately 100 meters from the beach. The main level has a large open kitchen we enjoyed cooking our own meals most days, dining table and deck perfect for lounging or doing yoga. Upstairs were the beds (1 king and 2 singles) complete with mosquito nets a must for the tropics. Note the stairs to the loft sleeping area are a bit steep. The house is ringed by many tropical trees especially almond (favorite food of the macaws)! Which attracted dozens of Red Macaws (aka flying rainbows) to descend upon the trees in the morning and late afternoon, the sight was stunning. The beach is great for surfing but less than ideal for swimming as there is a long rock shelf that extends a couple of hundred meters off shore. Definitely bring water shoes or some other protective foot wear. Must dos while you are there 1. Beach walks 2. River hike to the water fall (Monika will guide you) 3. Visit Corcovado! Monika, Walter and the entire staff embody the essence of Pura Vida!

Dear Valued Customer,
Casa Troya is a special space, and we're glad that you and your girlfriend enjoyed it. Even after living here for so many years we never tire of seeing the scarlet macaws in the almond trees infront of the house. Thanks for your recommendations on activities and bringing water shoes. Both will come in handy for any future guests. Pura Vida!

An absolute gem of an experience. The staff is friendly, engaging, present, available, interested and helpful one hundred percent. The location truly is a private getaway - to be in the ocean and be the only people in the water for what feels like forever in both directions. The most outstanding experience, other than the clear skies and ocean, was the food. Months later we are still talking about the chef and the food. Four meals a day of impeccably prepared menus full of locally grown foods and freshly day-of caught fish. There is a reason people keep coming back. Whether you're solo, a couple, a family or a group, Boca Sombrero is an ideal getaway location. You can choose to take advantage of surfing, yoga, massage, acupuncture and hiking - or just relax and do nothing. It's a great opportunity to become familiar with Osa, the locals, the ex-pats, and the environment. It's a must to go on a hike to the National Park for animal sightings and hiking.

This place is the joy at the end of the universe! They are first-class in terms of serving your needs and being available, while leaving you to your own discoveries of the wilds of the Osa. I hesitate to write this review out of selfishness, because this will be my 7th year in a row coming here and loving every moment of it. The pool is perfect, the surfing is the easiest place for beginners, the chill factor is over the top, the food is sublime. There are bugs and crawlies, it is the jungle, and all the accommodations are basically outdoors. Thus, it is not for the squeamish in that sense. Its HOT in the hot season. There are monkeys and mangoes and mushrooms and so much love in all they do. I love it here, my home away from home!

Room Tip: I love Casa Playa because of the pool. Casa Troya has that rustic "Robinson Crusoe" kind o...
