Only stayed one night and one night was enough! Room looked like a cement prison cell with two beds. The shower's metal grate covering the drain was lifted so I nearly sliced the bottom of my foot. The breakfast included with our night's stay was best avoided. We were seated by a grumpy hostess/server at a table with dirty linens. Food was even stuck to the candle in the middle of the table. The fruit platter was laid out without any covering so it was a party for the flies. The staff around the property was not friendly except for the woman who checked us in. She was very pleasant. The only good thing I can write is that our room had A/C.

Nice, remotely located resort right by the sea, about 3 miles from Puerto Jimenez. Taxi from town costs about 15 USD one way, so access by rental car is preferable. Good facilities, big pool, spacious, clean rooms with air condition. Wifi did not work in our room (apartment 11), but did so around main area of resort. Plenty of wildlife from iguanas to macaus, tucans and even crocodiles.

Front desk staff who greeted us was very charming, unfortunately rest of employees was no match at all. Restaurant staff clearly seem to have an attitude problem and appeared very disorganized. Breakfast was among the poorest we ever had, and we fail to comprehend how the restaurant would charge non-guests 10 USD for it (see pictures).

We hence opted to eat at Iguana Lodge instead, 300m down the beach. They both serve great food and truly live up to Costa Rica‘s pura vida attitude and hospitality.

We arrived to the hotel early evening. The location is about 10 min drive (rough roads) from Puerto Jimenez. The grounds are well taken care of and very clean. There is only one restaurant on site which is quite expensive. Their fish and their pasta are the best choices. The rooms (we had a suite) are specious but with minimal amenities: no closets (one small shelf and a small hanging rods for clothes), minimum towels and a small mirror. However they do have small refrigerator and a coffee maker. The main advantage of the rooms is the AC!!! The staff was really nice and helpful. They helped us organizing all our trips and were super efficient. The beach is right in front of the hotel but is lacking equipment such as chairs, umbrellas etc. so very few people used the beach. The pool is nice although the wet bar was closed the entire time (maybe not enough people in the pool area to justify...). Overall it was convenient, quiet and comfortable.

I stayed 5 nights at Agua Dulce in February, and can't say enough nice things about this place. The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. Where they really shine is in the location on the beach with a lovely pool, and their incredible staff. Carla was so helpful in getting us scheduled on tours to Corcovado, night hiking, and snorkeling at Cano Island. She was just so helpful and friendly, it made our visit special.

My friends and I spent 9 days at Agua Dulce in mid-January, and our lovely memories are helping to get us through this frigid weather back home. I loved our stay there. I will be honest in this review, as some things that are not so important to me might be important to someone else. Yes, Agua Dulce is at the end of a long, unpaved, sometimes incredibly bumpy road about 15 minutes from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The reward for making it down that road---which is not so unusual in it's condition---is that you get to stay at one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. Playa Preciosa is wide, unspoiled, sometimes totally empty, and stretches for miles each way down Golfito Bay. None of the hotels in town can claim this beauty. The only other hotel on this same gorgeous beach is the Iguana Lodge, just a half mile or so down the road. A very nice place as well, but quite a bit more expensive. The beach is actually public, but is seldom crowded---I never saw more than 8 people there, often no one at all, save some adorable puppies who must live nearby. The current is strong, so you need to be careful. It would be best to have someone with you if you plan to jump the waves. The sunrises are spectacular, and walks are soul nourishing. You will see and hear brilliantly colored Scarlett Macaws nesting in the trees, and there are howler monkeys and lizards as well.
It may not be the most luxurious or trendy place---Agua Dulce is low key, attractive and comfortable. There are buildings with rooms and suites that are spread out around and back from the pool and reception area. We stayed in one of the 3 beachfront suites, and I would highly recommend that option. Sitting on your porch, gazing at the beach and hearing the waves is worth the price. The rooms are basic, but comfortable---two bedrooms with two good queen beds, a sitting room in between. The sitting room has 2 chairs, a loveseat, a fridge and coffee maker. The bathroom was huge---not really necessary, but nice. We didn't use the jacuzzi tub, but the shower was great---large, with plenty of hot water, and good pressure. And the AC was super, and much appreciated. Wifi is pretty good as well. There are no T.V.s in the rooms. I think the suites, even those further back, would be the best option. With just a room, all you really have would be two beds. The ground floor rooms poolside would not have too much privacy. The second floor rooms have a nice porch---and a railing to hang your wet towels and bathing suits on. Housekeeping was every other day, and they always did an excellent job.
The pool is lovely, a really nicely set up area with lots of chaises and umbrellas, so you can be in the sun or shade. Please know that the resort does permit the public to use the pool. This is something we admired, and didn't mind at all, as it was never really overcrowded. I do wish that the swim up bar had had someone in attendance, but I can understand that most of the time, the number of people in the pool would not merit a full time employee manning a bar.
The open air reception area is charming, and the women at the desk were wonderful. I can't say enough about how friendly, patient and eager to help us they were. Helen, Wendy, Carla---I hope I got their names right, and didn't forget anyone---thank-you so much for making our stay very special. They can arrange just about any activity you want. We had a great horseback ride with Elmer, who brought the horses right to our door. The tour of the chocolate farm, Finca Kobo, was lovely---relaxing, informative, lots of fun, with delicious food at the end. Our favorite activity was a dolphin watching and snorkeling boat ride with Tomas. If you get a chance to go with Tomas on his cool cement boat, do it! He was an awesome guide---friendly, knowledgeable, funny, with excellent English and a wealth of knowledge about everything Costa Rican. And we saw hundreds of dolphins, snorkeled at a small reef, and had a great lunch! It was magical. There are lots of other things you can do as well---I just wish we'd had time to visit the wildlife sanctuary or to zipline. So just ask about the many exciting tours and excursions available.
The restaurant on site is a good option, since you are out of town. It is under separate management, and I reviewed it on it's own. Another good choice would be walking a short way down the beach, or a bit longer drive down the road, to the Iguana Lodge---good food, in a lovely, slightly more upscale setting.
I think one of the main things to consider if you are planning to stay at Agua Dulce is that it is outside of town. If you want the freedom of going back and forth to Puerto Jimenez to eat, shop or further explore, renting a car would be necessary. We did this, and are so glad we did. Be sure to get a four wheel drive. We took our little car down roads that were mostly rocky paths that sometimes went through (not over) creeks and rivers, on the way to Matapalo, and it did great. The guys at Alamo are awesome. So, with having your own transportation, and being able to stay by a gorgeous beach, you have the best of both worlds.
This is a long review! But I wanted to do justice, honestly, to a very special place.

Room tip: Suites rather than just a room are more enjoyable, and a beachfront suite is awesome.
