“Take a hike to Sirena”

Sirena Ranger Station
Reviewed February 28, 2012

We saw some incredible wildlife on our way from Casa Corcovado to Sirena. A must
But if you want to stay overnight and eat there, book well in advance and be prepared for simple conditions and... Bugs!

Hike, fly or boat in to the middle of this animal haven and you wont be disappointed.

Do be sure to hire a guide, they will know all the best trails for your interests & abilities and will spot animals you never would've known were in your presence. Plus they can make the park entrance and overnight stay reservations in advance on your behalf.

The ranger stations facilities are great for camping...you can get a "dorm room" if you desire privacy, put up a tent or simply a mosquito net and a matress on the large platform, or set up a tent in the grass. I recommend the tent on the platform (off the ground, shaded, and up higher to take advantage of any breeze that passes your way). There's also places to hang your stinky clothes after a long sweaty hike.

If you fly or boat in, I recommend bringing your own food to save a ton of money. However if you hike in, you wont want to lug around that extra weight, and it's always nice to have someone cook for you.

Bathrooms & showers might not be immaculate, but are private and have running water! I wore my sandals while using the facilities just to be safe :)

Believe it or not, there is wi-fi and a payphone available.

Lights go out at 8pm so bring a headlamp/flashlight.

Great location, best place to watch wildlife, busy during peak season, the food they offer is rather expensive but it was good(you have to consider that you stay in the middle of the jungle and everything gets delivered a long way by boat). We slept on the platform in our tent and the washrooms and showers we had to use were disgusting. Lots of mosquitos at night. Be aware that you have to make a reservation in advance (Park office in Puerto Jimenez) and that it fills up fast during dry season. If you plan to hike in and you want to do so without a guide, make sure you get all the important information (for example you need to know the tides for crossing the river mouth). We found that the lady at the park office didn't know anything but we got helpul information at one of the tour operator office in Puerto Jimenez.

Loved the animals. Easy walking - but take a guide so that you see more and understand what is going on.

We visited for three nights, camping at the ranger station.
The park is superb, immaculate, wild and pristine. If you come here you will see a lot of wildlife in all it's forms.
If you come on a guided day trip you will have a great day but so long as you are not afraid of bugs and can rough it a bit you should stay longer.
The ranger station is fairly rough and ready and if you are camping you need to be prepared for a sweltering experience (In January anyway). It will be worth it.
There are few places like this left, see it while you can.
