“Wonderful wildlife with an excellent guide”

Sirena Ranger Station
Reviewed January 21, 2012

We had a fantastic three days in Corcovado national park. We fixed up a naturalist guide through the Surcostours agency. He was called Eric (nickname Forta) and was excellent. He knew every single species even just from its call or noise, and he was identifying things before we had even noticed there was something there. He also got up very early in the morning to take us out to see the dawn wildlife at the best time of day. We would thoroughly recommend this guide, and also the agency who organised it. The lady at Surcostours was called Ute and was very helpful and organised. Everything worked just as promised and she even helped us sort out the next stage of our trip with no extra charge.

After Corcovado we went to a private reserve called La Tarde. It's only an hour away, just out the back of Corcovado National Park. It's a really peaceful spot owned by a charming local man who switched his business from farming to ecotourism. It was the best place on our trip for seeing frogs, and it was also lovely staying in the rustic lodge and being fed by his family. Ute can help you organise this too.

This sort of trip is a great way to put your tourism money into the hands of local people.

The email for Surcostours is reservations.surcostours@gmail.com, or info@surcostours.com also worked.

A lovely big inviting lodge turns out to be only good for the few overnight pitched tents. There were digusting bathrooms and what they called a communal kitchen. Don't expect to get drinking water or food here. It appeared unstaffed.

We were fortunate to fly into Corcovado through a private plane flown by Alberto from Alfa Romeo AeroTaxi. We then spent 3 nights in the dorm-styled rooms. It seemed that each morning our alarm was the sound of the Howler Monkeys -- amazing. We saw so many things ... tapirs, anteaters, monkeys, toucans, mackaws, lizards, snakes, crocodiles, ants and many types of birds thanks to our tour guide Nito. Nito's passion for nature, knowledge and expertise of Corcovado is what made our stay enjoyable. Nito is from Surcos Tours and his assistant, Ute, was very helpful with the planning of our trip. My biggest advice is to be sure you have rubber boots to hike through the streams and mud. Thanks, Nito and Ute.

I will write a very short review. We stayed in Corcovado 3 nights (in cabins and tents outside). It was wonderful. You must spend at least 1 full day in Sirena to really see anything. We went with Nito from Surcostours. What a wonderful and knowledgeable person. Nito is extremely passionate about birds and other animals and pointed them out by the hundreds way before we ever saw them. He has a pretty good sense of humor and is genuinely a good person. Ute from Surcostours was extremely helpful in organizing everything. She is very knowledgeable and awesome. We took the hike in from Carate and the flight out from Sirena. Food there was good and expensive, but better than carrying it in yourself. Altogether, do book with Surcostours. They are very professional (they also recommended a wonderful place to stay in Puerto Jimenez - Hospitajes Backpackers) where the innkeeper was fantastic. Thank you, Nito & Ute for helping "the fastest people ever from Minnesota" with a spectacular trip. We will always remember this. -M&M

Sirena Ranger station was quite an oasis after our long hike in from Carate. The experience of being in the heart of Corcovado is absolutely unforgettable and so worth the trek there. We stayed in a bunk room which was surprisingly roomy. There are 4 single beds to a room. We read a lot about being too hot which was not the case for us but it was the end of the rainy season. Don't go without a mosquito net. Not that mosquitos were a huge problem but my husband did end up with a scorpion in his bed when he didn't tuck his in well enough so we were glad to have them for that reason alone. The food is good and yes very expensive but they have to transport anything in as they cannot keep food there.
