“Immersed in Nature - loved it!”
Reviewed February 17, 2005

It's an adventure before you even get there! If coming from San Jose, you take a 45 minute flight on a 14 seat plane, then take a 20 minute bus ride to the landing station where you take an adventurous and beautifully scenic boat ride through a gorgeous river bordered by animal-filled forests (45 minutes) followed by a one hour boat ride through the ocean (if choppy, you and your luggage, which is put into dry-packs, will be tossed around and you will be very wet). It was terrific! You have a beach-landing (prepare to step into the water when leaving the boat) and then you and your luggage are hauled by a tractor up a very steep hill to the jungle lodge area.

The grounds are spectactular, the rooms are extremely comfortable and pretty and you go to sleep and wake up every day to the sounds of the forest (birds, ciccatas, monkeys) as the rooms are open-air (no glass windows - -the whole bungalow is, however, completely screen enclosed).

The staff is very attentive and kind, the guides are extremely knowledgeable and the surroundings are spectactular (the lodge borders Corcovado National Park).

The hike in Corcovado National Park is breathtaking - - wear a bathing suit under your gear so that you can stop during the tour and swim in the waterfalls! The tour to Cano Island was not as intriguing (the snorkeling was no so terrific - - no many fish where we were), and though the boat ride there are back can be great (we had a few dolphin sitings!) other than hiking and beachcombing, there is not much to do on the Cano Island tour. I would recommend doing another tour instead - perhaps a dolphin/whale watch tour.

The food was served in a main dining area (you get to dine and meet the other guests). Breakfast was ala carte. Dinner was always a varied (though pre-set) menu. Food was very good. Bartenders were friendly and nice. There is a one hour happy hour each night at the Sunset bar - great for photo shots.

Word of caution - - though this is a nature-lover's paradise and since there are only 18 bungalows it feels very intimate and safe, however, the first night we were there, we experienced a robbery - - almost everyone athe lodge was robbed (stuff was taken from inside the porches and from outside of the bungalows). My shoes were outside of my bungalow and were taken (almost everyone had a pair of shoes outside of their bungalow that went missing). One couple had luggage and passports taken (later, the luggage and passports were found and only the shoes were missing). The management was very apologetic about the situation (they gave me some free T-shirts for the trouble) and the robbery wasn't violent (no one got hurt and the only thing that I think people lost were shoes), however, keeping all important valuables - money, passports, etc. in the in-room safe is a MUST!

This did not detract from the experience though. The grounds were unmatchable, the staff and food were great and the location is ideal for anyone seeking to get away from it all (no phone service at all there, no internet, no tv). I would go again in a second.

We were booked during christmas vacation for 2 days.
About two weeks before our trip we called to arrange some
activities and found out that they had given our room
to someone else (presumably someone who was staying
longer) and were completely booked. We asked them to
rectify the situation, and they promised to call us back but
never did. We followed up and they never returned any further
phone calls or faxes. We had to find a last minute place
somewhere else. (We ended up at Jinetes de Osa, and loved it).

I have finally decided to answer the bad and terrible reviews as that seems to be the right thing to do. It is of course hard to do, so many years after the fact, in this case over 8 years. We still have the same person in reservations and the same General Manger, they remember the case of this women who was very unhappy with us. It is very unusual that we would accept a reservation for 2 nights during the Christmas season and we ask for the booking to be paid with quite a bit of anticipation. The person in question had made an inquiry about a reservation but never received a confirmed booking or made any deposit to hold the space. We are very sorry that there was any confusion and I personally apologize for the misunderstanding. Steven Lill / owner

We stayed here in May 2004 with some friends to celebrate my 50th birthday. This lodge was the highlight of our trip to CR. Getting there was an adventure by plane and boat. Then we rode on the back of a tractor to get up the hill! The grounds were gorgeous and immaculate. We were greeted by a sleeping boa constrictor in a tree outside our bungalow. The bungalows were delightful - great beds with mosquito nettings, big bathrooms, decortated by fresh hibiscus flowers everywhere. Our guide was great, the food was great, the bartender was better than great, and we did not want to leave. On my birthday the kitchen staff made me a cake and they all came out and sang to me. It was truly a memorable experience that I would recommend to anyone that loves the outdoors.
