“Beautiful Property, wonderful staff but a bit on the pricey side”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

To kick this review off I’ll give a bit of background information. In December 2013 we traveled to Costa Rica on a two week whirlwind journey. We went in on a budget and decided early on that we would rather spending our cash on experiences and food rather than accommodations.

The La Leona Eco-Lodge is gorgeous and provides visitors with a glamping experience like they probably have never seen it before. On top of that the staff was wonderfully accommodating and attentive.

Our tent was very quaint, consisting of two twin-sized beds and a separate, fenced-in bathroom out back. The tents were very clean but seemed a bit rundown in terms of the actual structure. The stay at La Leona Eco-Lodge is not for those on a budget but if you’re willing to spend $110-140 a day per person (meals included) its a slice of paradise!

In the end, I think this place is beautiful and makes the most sense from a cash flow standpoint for folks traveling alone or who aren’t on a tight budget.

Pros:
- Gorgeous location and sense of serenity due to remote location
- Wonderfully attentive and accommodating staff
- Three meals per day (nothing fancy but all high quality)

Cons:
- Price point seems a bit steep for what you actually get in terms of accommodation and food
- Corners seem to have been cut in the construction of the tents
- Remote location makes it potentially difficult to leave in case of medical emergency or last minute change of plans

This place is about an hours walk along the beach but well worth it when you get there!! No electricity in the tents but we did have our own outside shower and toilet, albeit no hot water either but quite refreshing in the morning. Lovely to sit out on the verandah and watch the birds feeding in the trees. Walks into Corcovado National park are run from the hotel, well worth venturing into. Staff were very attentive, very friendly, nothing was too much trouble, food was very good and they cater to your taste (me being a non red meat eater). No need to take fancy clothes and "dress for dinner". We would definately stay here again.

Where should I begin. After our drive over the Osa Peninsula, we've ended up at Carate beach. The Macaws welcomed us and the view was stunning! From there we first had to wait for the Horse and carriage to arrive before we could start our walk without the luggage ;)

Once we were at the camp, the very friendly staff welcomed us with a fresh smoothie! The gave us the needed information and showed us the tent. Again, WAUW! The tent looked great and the outside bathroom was so beautiful! We had a first row ocean view tent, and it was VERY worth it! Waking up in the morning just seeing the ocean and the palmtrees made us very happy people :)

The food the staff cooks was excellent, we couldn't believe they could cook this good food with this little resources around. The day we've arrived we didn't had any lunch and lunchtime at La Leona was over, but they did manage to give us some fresh fruit.

When we were there we did some (morning)walks on our own, and did the full day hike with the La Leona guide. We can definitely recommend this walk. The guides at La Leona know so much about the environment and animals there, and they spot even more than you do yourselves. The nature at La Leona is spectacular and this was our number 1 spot in Costa Rica!!

Thanks guys for the good service, we really enjoyed it! (and the pipa ;) )

So much wildlife, so much flora, so much kindness. Well, read the other reviews and you'll get the picture. But what was really stunning: towards the end of our stay, while having dinning, a tapir walked into the restaurant in search of a snack! Now, this was a first for the restaurant crew too!

Anyway, you could easily spend weeks around here. Corcovado National Park is great and directly behind the lodge are trails too. Be observant and silent and enjoy!

Man, while writing this review all I want is get back there!

Room Tip: We preferred the tents near the sea. There are also tents higher up. Probably a five minute walk fro...

This place is amazing. This is what Costa Rica is about. The tents offer luxury camping and it truly feels like you are sleeping in the jungle when you get woken up by the howlers in the morning or a crazy lightning storm during the night. It might be hard to get there especially during the rainy season, but it's definitely worth it.

Amazing, incredible, stunning….none of these words do La Leona and Corcovado justice. I have wanted to go to Costa Rica for many years and finally pulled the trigger with cheap Spirit Airline tickets. I travelled with my five year old son and 1 year old daughter and everything about our weeklong stay and the place was absolutely perfect. From the moment I arrived I felt like I was in a beautiful dream. The tents overlook the deserted beach and wild ocean, and the lodge is surrounded by lush, tropical rainforest. Scarlet Macaws, hummingbirds and capuchin and spider monkeys visited every day, and my son loved chasing crabs on the beach and building forts out of the driftwood and coconut shells. There is a little creek close to the lodge where we swam, and hiked into the park every day (5 mins to La Leona Ranger station) or on the trails on La Leona’s land, where we found all kinds of wonderful frogs, anteaters, butterflies, snakes, birds, coatis and even a tayra.
Originally I was booked into a Carate lodge but changed my reservation to La Leona after it was recommended by a local guide. I am so happy and thankful I did. La Leona is run by a local family and they employ local people. They have a base in Puerto Jimenez where we stopped briefly on the way in and out, and were helped with inward and outbound travelling arrangements (pick up from the little plane to PJ and drop off at the local collectivo boat to Gulfito). To me, it was important to support a local business rather than a lodge owned and run by Americans or Europeans. Also, La Leona takes their sustainability and conservation efforts seriously and I was glad to be part of this. We travelled a bit outside Corcovado and sadly other parts of Costa Rica are getting developed and dirty, with trash all over supposedly unspoiled beaches. There are very, very few places like La Leona and Corcovado left in the world – really an unspoiled gem. No trash, cars or noise pollution here! La Leona is a 40 minute hike up the beach from the airport strip at Carate so it is really in the heart of the rainforest. You will not see cars or other people unless they are staying at the lodge too or hiking to Sirena (passing by on the beach).
Managers Phillipe and Joel did everything they could to make us feel welcome and comfortable. All the other staff members we met were friendly, kind and professional. Their resident guides Luis and Daniello always answered any questions we had about the animals we had found. The lodge is welcoming and relaxing and my children were able to play and wander around freely. There is no electricity, wifi or hot water in the tents which is not for everyone but it was more than perfect for me (there is electricity in the main lodge so you can charge cameras, computers, etc). I was happy to focus on the forest and my family one hundred percent. The food was also outstanding – we had three meals a day and chef David and his crew did a great job of providing flavorful variety with lots of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables. It was a lifetime dream for me to finally be in the rainforest and I am already planning my return! I cannot recommend La Leona highly enough.

This was our second stay at La Leona. We found it as delightful this time as the last time 2 yrs ago. This lodge in remote Osa peninsula just steps from Corcovado National is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. Getting there is a bit of an adventure in itself. We flew to from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez, were transported by a cab driver over dirt roads and rivers to Carate (2 hour drive was arranged by La Leona) and from there we walked an hour on the beach to find the lodge. The lodge has a lovely bar and dining area decorated with wooden sculptures and coconut fish. Platform tents are arranged along the beach and further up the hillside. Each tent has a little porch for sitting, decent beds, a toilet and sink and cold water shower. No electricity - candle for lights Animals abound at La Leona. Without even going far from your tent you may see coati, white face monkeys, anteaters, scarlet macaws, lizards, and humming birds. Puma have been known to visit the lodge although we did not see any one on either of our trips. Food is served family style and is just delicious. Lodge is owned and operated by local folks who care very much about sustainability and about their guests. Guided hikes through Corcovado are wonderful. One thing to know is that swimming on the beach is not recommended due to the rip tides but a short hike away one can cool down in the Madrigal river. This is a place I will come back to again as soon as I am able. Perfect location, comfortable arrangements and beautiful warm helpful Costa Rican staff and owners.

Room Tip: I recommend the beach side tents unless you have alot of energy and need more privacy as it is a bit...
