“Great place if you don't mind a steep hike to town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

Had a great time here staying here for five days with my girlfriend back in May of 2011... I promised the woman working there (can't remember her name unfortunately) that I'd write a review and haven't gotten around to it until now, so things may or may not have changed since we were there, but judging on the pace of life in Montezuma I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same.

PROS/CONS (as of May '11):

+ Very clean, well-kept casitas (cottages) spread out over a spacious, very nicely landscaped hilltop property
+ Friendly, helpful staff
+ Nice pool/hottub with a view (I think it was more like a lukewarm tub, considering the weather there)
+ Mango and Starfruit trees nearby, and a blender in the room! Great for DIY breakfast smoothies
+ Chicho the giant pot belly pig!
+ Great place for a long stay, feels like a modest home away from home
+ A/C
– About a 10-20min walk to town, either through a fairly steep forest path which can be intimidating if you aren't familiar with Costa Rican jungle, or down a steep gravel road that isn't lit at night. Between the howler monkeys above, barking guard dogs along the way, and the speedy local drivers whipping around the sketchy dirt corners, it's not for the faint of heart (Make sure you bring a flashlight!)... Either way, you have a bit of an adventure/nightmare walking back in the dark depending on your perspective. We chose the jungle 9/10 times, and always ended up spotting some interesting wildlife: iguanas and some smaller lizards, howler monkeys and a few birds– Most notably a blue motmot!
– WiFi was decent but not the best, this may have changed but I remember chasing it across the property... Best spot was near the pool.
– They were doing some construction at the time which wasn't a big deal at all but was a bit disrupting. Completely understandable since we were pretty much the only ones there at the time, so this isn't really a complaint

All in all it's a great place if you don't mind the location. Easily recommendable for a long stay, though I'd choose something closer to town if you're only in the Montezuma area for one night.

The rooms and bungalows are situated on a hill some 3 km from the centre of Montezuma. They are situated on a road alongside expensive holiday houses enjoying the benefits of more breeze and view than the hotels in the town itself. The quality of the accommodation is excellent and there is a beautiful pool. The woman who cleans and cooks is dellightful and the night watchman does a good job. But it is far from town and transport is difficult, especially on Sundays when taxis tend not too work. My tip - only come here if you have your own transport.

Nice place to stay in Montezuma for long time stay with the litle cabin house with two room and a litle kitchen, the view is very nice on the ocean and the sun rising!! it is up the hill of downtown Montezuma, 5 mins drive to the city center where you can find restaurants and stores.Try the Zuma tour to the Isla Tortuga for snorkling and beach time.

Room Tip: Ask for the cabin near the big swimming pool!!

We rented a 2-bedroom villa with a BBQ for 6 nights in March 2013. Fittings are basic, but sufficient. Our villa had a nice patio area with BBQ facility and sea view, where we spent the mornings and evenings. Out of sight of the pool, many birds and flowers. Very hot, but both bedrooms had A/C.

Kitchen fittings were bare minimum, but the staff helped us with a kettle, and what else we required. The hill from town is definitely too long to walk up, as mentioned by others. $4.00 taxi ride up or down once a day still cheaper than renting a car.

The pool was very nice, and we had dinner most evenings one of the restaurants in Montezuma, except for the two BBQ evenings we had. (Difficult to get good raw steak in MZ).

When planning the trip, allow for $200 to$300 and half a day to get in and out of Montezuma from San Jose airport by taxi, ferry, water taxi, - not a quick and easy access.

Staff cleaned the room daily, doors had keys, and we had a safe in the kitchen, so do NOT worry about the theft reported by one reviewer in January 2013 - as I was.

Plus, the shower of our villa was indoors (no bugs), and we had sufficient hot water. The water heater has a control dial which was turned to minimum, and I wonder if the other reviewers perhaps missed this little detail. Lots of mosquitoes, so pack the insect lotion.

Room Tip: I would recommend the villa with the verandah and BBQ, even though it does not have a view of the po...

The "outdoor shower" was nice but at $100. per night, it is a little surprising to find that the property has no hot water. The rooms are nice and the ocean view is lovely but you can't just walk to the ocean from the hotel. We arrived just after dark and could not find anyone to check in with. We always travel with flashlights so we were able to comb the rather large property for a person to check us in. Finally, some guests who had arrived after dark the night before rescued us and helped us find someone down by the pool. Obviously, don't arrive after dark regardless of the ferry schedule. We moved the next morning.
Fortunately, we brought our own coffee and all we had to do was clean the grounds out of the coffee pot from the prior guest and we were good to go.

Pros
- Beautiful view overlooking the ocean
- Amazing infinity pool overlooking the ocean
- Only a few rooms and cabins so you have the pool almost to yourself
- Nice rooms
- Comfortable beds
- Small patio with lounge chairs
- Clean
- Very helpful and friendly staff
- Fridge in room
Cons
- Room not fully made up every day - didn't empty used coffee pot
- Short walk from town but up an extremely steep hill - not recommended for those not in good shape but cab rides are an option. Not too bad on the way down.
- Outdoor shower is cold most of the time but warm in Montezuma so not bad
- A lot of "critters" in the bathroom due to the outdoor shower - not for people who mind ants, small newts, or crickets

Room Tip: Ask for one of the stand alone cottages

Nice property with beautiful pool and stunning view. It's up hill, maybe you'll have difficulties finding it! And the road is quite tricky. I didn't like the inside of the house that much. Basic, pretty old and not a nice bathroom. But, it's Montezuma so you don't really care about it! Great place if you want to chill by the pool all day long.
