We visited the cloud forest for most of one day. In the morning we had a guided tour with an english speaking guide and then the afternoon we just walked around ourselves. We got a ride to the reserve with a different guide for just $1 more than the cost of the bus to the reserve. Our guide, Juan Carlos, was great. He knew all the different kinds of birds and plant life. My girlfriend was interested in orchids so he made a point of pointing out as many kinds as he could find. During our tour, we saw lots of amazing birds and vegetation. The highlights were seeing a male and female quetzal and seeing a blue crowned mot mot. We also really enjoyed hiking by ourselves to the continental divide view point. We weren't as good at spotting birds ourselves but just the vegetation is pretty spectacular. Also while we were eating lunch by the entrance to the reserve, some workers pointed out a tarantula to us. The hummingbird garden is pretty cool if you like them. There are tons of them and you will feel them wizzing by all around you. This is a must do for your stay in Monteverde.
