“Not for everyone”
Reviewed March 12, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

This accommodation is a great experience on many levels but do ensure it is the type of experience you want.
It is set in fabulous grounds (a little in need of attention) with an array of birds, insects and potentially other creatures for you to explore. Make sure you get as much information on how to spot from day one as you may be lucky to have sight of the Toucan family who reside there. If you sit still facing the window by the sink, you will see hummingbirds feeding from the flowers.
The grounds are shared by the neighbouring farmer so do expect visits from their dogs and cows and look out for cow pats whilst exploring the grounds.
The dawn courus will awaken you with their song as well as their exploration on the tin roof.
There is an abundance of insects flying and crawling, you are in the jungle. Check your bed fully before you get in it.
The house itself is basic and well used. All the cooking equipment you should need is there but give it a wash first.
The hot tub is a lovely treat after a day hiking in the jungle and the WiFi is excellent. Mobile phone signal is limited there so use of their land line phone is very welcome for local calls to book adventures.
The neighbour who looks after you oh speaks local dialect Spanish so make sure you can contact V who is uber helpful.
If you plan to save money by cooking for yourself, there are decent supermarkets on the way and in monteverde town centre. There are also plenty of places to eat and drink in town.
The sustsinability centre is worth a visit and reminds you how the cost of the accommodation helps education in the area. Esure you give yourself enough time (1_2hrs) if possible.
This accommodation is for those who like to get up early and explore. Do your research into the area to see what you expect from the trip beforehand. We highly reccomend the zip wire, night walks, bat jungle and serpentarium.

Management Response
Mar 21, 2017
It is true that the house is not for everyone as it is spacious, but rustic and there are insects in the surrounding forest that make their way from time to time, even through the screens.
Normally you do not need to wash the dishes before using; however, windy season brings gusts of wind and dust that may settle on everything. Our housekeeper tries her very best to keep things tidy and clean.
Regarding the dogs. We do not share the farm with the neighbors, but Giselle's dogs do not know this and end up escorting you to the house and hanging out, specially if you play with them or feed them. They are friendly and well-cared for. But if you do not enjoy dogs, this may not be the best place for you. The neighbor's cows are a different story. They get in when the gate is left open, otherwise, they stay on their side of the fence. During windy season, it is almost impossible to keep all small branches from the trails as they fall continuously. Otherwise, we try hard to keep the trails clear. We feel having a secluded home in the midst of paradise outweighs some of the small inconveniences that may pop up. But the reviewer is correct... it is not for everyone... you've got to love nature and all that comes with it.

We were looking for something off the beaten path. This rustic cottage was just the right place to retreat! My husband and son found giant marine toads in the pond and we saw toucans and many other birds in the garden. You are on the dry side of the mountain here and there are NO mosquitoes! Only a few miles away from the continental divide and the lush cloud forest - really amazing to have two such different climates! Giselle is the neighbor who lives near the cottage and fixes delicious authentic meals. Dunia and Veronica were very helpful with booking the cottage and they run the sustainability center. Funds from staying here help there efforts. While you are in the area, look up Pasion Costa Rica on Trip Advisor. They provide Nature Tours and Hikes in the area - Marcos and Susu were amazing!

“the back garden is a nature reserve by itself”
Reviewed November 16, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

It is located about 15 minutes from all the main attractions in the area like natural reserves and canopying. The biggest plus about this place is the immense back garden, which is a natural reserve by itself (the only place I've seen toucans in Costa Rica). The house itself reasonably equipped and the canvas walls give it an indigenous feeling. The owner is friendly and active in environmental sustainability: we later found out that the profit of the guest house goes to local river preservation. Her organisational talents might need some brushing up: it was unclear where and how we had to pay, which turned out was at a preservation centre at a 40 minutes drive, luckily on the route to where we were going next.

“Absolutely Amazing”

Our stay was better than we could have imagined. The cottage is roomy and comfortable with everything you need – we were able to cook meals, but the town is also close enough to get supplies and go out for dinner too. The owners provided the most amazing coffee beans so you could make a perfect cup before heading out for the day. The cottage has unbelievable views and we could even see the bay right from the front window. We did a lot of bird and wildlife watching right on the property, and saw birds, a sloth and even a fox. The porch even has a porch swing with a view!! The location is great for heading to the cloud forest for hiking and bird-watching and the owners had great recommendations for guides and activities. We had a rental 4x4 so it was very easy to get around to see the sights. The owners also have a Sustainability Center down the valley and it was a great stop both coming and going. The Sustainability Center is in a beautiful area and the owners were so welcoming and knowledgeable. They run a small market on Saturdays and it was one of the highlights of our trip – fresh local food, vegetables and fruit. The cottage and owners were wonderful and we cannot wait to return.

“Wonderful Hide-Away”

Casa Inspiracion is a roomy Costa Rican style home-away-from-home tucked in the mountain side with beautiful walking trails throughout the property. The house is well supplied with dishes, kitchen utensils and organic local coffee. It is comfortably furnished, including nice beds. My favorite were the large screened windows in the bedrooms that were shuttered with rustic-looking wood.

The place is very private and secure. It was the perfect mix of a Costa Rica style house with North American amenities in it, including a large soaker tub. We saw several tropical birds on the property, and if you walk the trail to the pond at night you can see several large toads playing in the water as well as witness leaf-cutter ant highways travelling across the trails.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a tasty local snack. We made arrangements for the same cook to deliver a supper to the house one night, she is an amazing cook and I'm afraid to say we way over-ate because it tasted so good!

The house is located just a few minutes drive from Santa Elena where you can access all kinds of tours and sight seeing, as well as several restaurants. Or, you can just hang out at the house listening to the cool breezes and the birds. We did a couple days and each!

“charming interior but basic building, feels like living in a Tico house”
Reviewed December 29, 2014 for a stay in December 2014

Veronica gave us a really warm welcome. the house itself is 10 minutes drive (including a very steep hobbly road) from the nice centre of Santa Elena. If you arrive in the dark like we did, keep your torch ready to walk down with your luggage. The house is cosy, but the walls and roof are so basic that it was hard to sleep: first night, lots of rain on the roof, and the second night the wind blew so hard that a candle inside went out!!! we thought the roof would blow off if it continued like that. if you like the feeling of living in a house of the locals, quiet and in the middle of nowhere, but close to Santa Elena, stay here :-)
