“Actually the Happiest Place on Earth!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2010

In the happiest country in the world, and in Manuel Antonio, where the rain forest meets the beach – both so beautiful, with their nature preserved, you will find a true feel of living amongst the locals & wildlife in the lush forest, with the most accommodating people everywhere you go!
I can’t say enough about Arenas del Mar, and at the same time, everything I have to say has been said before, but, the resort is really this incredible! I found this treasure last year after reading hundreds of trip reports on TripAdvisor. Visiting for the 2nd year in a row, hoping to get the same over the top service we had last year, and to our surprise, not only was the service impeccable, but the warmth of the staff and all they do to make your stay perfect, made us feel so special. Not only did they all remember us, and have a fruit plate in our room + water bottles at check in, we were also presented a gourmet-fancy dessert plate that had a personal welcome in chocolate!! Whatever we needed, it was always ‘a pleasure’ for them to help you. Unbelievable!!
The hotel grounds and rooms are beautiful, and the huge balcony w/Jacuzzi is the best! They have 7 buildings built into the cliff side. #1 at beach, and #7 at top, that has the lobby, bar, restaurant (good breakfast), and spa (loved it). We stayed in the 700 building (a long walk to the beach, but some did it!!), and we loved the golf cart rides on the beautiful paths through the hotel. Every driver was fun, and always available!
The beautiful & clean beaches are great (+ all to yourself!), but the current can get very strong, so if I had kids, I would not let them to go in too far. Boogie boards available to strap on for safety (& fun!).
The weather was part of the fun for us, as we experienced awesome thunder & lightning storms, and then it clears up, and always warm, so you can stay in your bathing suit & cover-ups!
Went on the private horseback tour (2nd time) w/ValmyTours, run by Valentin for 12 years on his family’s 90 acre farm, which has the most incredible setting for a ride through the rain forest, and the horses are specially bred, and very cared for. The ride includes getting off your horse and taking a dip in a small pond. We swam across the water where we climbed the rocks. It then it started to rain, so we came in and watched it rain for 10 minutes – then it stopped – and there was a waterfall right where we had just climbed! Can’t recommend this tour enough! Let me know if you need info.
Also went on the kayak tour through the mangrove – amazing. Happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this tour.
Don’t miss the tour at the Manuel Antonio National Park – lots of wildlife, especially howler monkeys! Ask for Melei – she was great.
I love, love, love this hotel, and would be happy to answer any questions.
One more thing I must say regarding the bumpy dirt road you take off of the main road to get to the resort – I have seen some reports complaining of this, and how they felt they even had to stay on property for dinners & such! But the whole Costa Rica experience is so eco-friendly, which is part of the beauty of this country, and with the hotel actually built into the wilderness, right at the edge of the beach, it would be ruined if you drove right up! We had fun taking the taxi rides into town on the bumpy road that the friendly drivers are all so experienced. One driver called the ride “A Costa Rican Massage!!” and we loved it!!

My Husband and I began our honeymoon at Arenas del Mar. We were treated like royalty from the moment they picked us up at the airport. Our driver Cesar was very kind and knowledgeable. He showed us lots on the 2.5 hour drive to the resort and answered all of our questions with a smile.

When we arrived at the resort we were given a delicious cocktail and shown to our room. We spent the first night of our trip in a rainforest suite (501A I think) which was incredible. It was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had a great jacuzzi. We spent the last 4 nights of our trip in a gorgeous ocean view suite (602A). It had amazing views and was very romantic. If you are on a tight budget the rainforest suites are wonderful and although they are their lowest level room will create a amazing atmosphere for your trip.

All of the staff is amazing. I loved riding around the resort in the carts because the drivers always pointed out wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, agoutis, birds, and lizzards. They taught us so much about wildlife in Costa Rica.

The food was soooo good. We ate at the Mirador Restaurant several times and were never disappointed. They have the BEST SANGRIA EVER!!! One day my husband and I went deep sea fishing and came back with some fresh mahi mahi. The chef prepared it for us 3 different ways for dinner that night. Now that is service!!! Their prices are very reasonable as well. We ate lunch at the Playitas restaurant twice. It was equally as good. My husband and I ordered the same things both times :) Mahi Mahi Fish Sticks and Teryiaki Chicken Sandwich YUMM!!! When we wanted to travel off the resort for dinner the staff recommended great restaurants for us to try. We especially loved Kapi Kapi.

The hotel is a little off the beaten path, but that is what makes it so wonderful. We never felt like we were in a touristy area and it's private beach was beautiful. Getting back to town was very easy. The hotel would call a cab to come pick us up or we would take the hotel shuttle if it was available for $10.

We did a few extra excursions through Arenas del Mar. We hiked to Biesanz Beach with our wonderful guide whose nickname was Windows. The beach was lovely and the snorkling was very fun. We also did the spice tour which was interesting and something different.

Overall we would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this resort if you are visiting Costa Rica. They will go above and beyond to make sure your trip is excellent. THANK YOU ARENAS DEL MAR FOR MAKING OUR HONEYMOON SO SPECIAL!!!!!

We ended our Costa Rica vacation here. We previously stayed at the Tabacon in Arenal and the Hidden Canopy Treehouse Boutique in Monteverde. I would think the closest comparison is the Tabacon, except here, I didn't feel like they were nickel and diming us like at the Tabacon and the staff here were so much more friendly! The food was much better here than at the Tabacon and they had a lot of things to keep guests occupied. For example, one night they had a plantain cooking display where they cooked plantains three different ways and you can sample to your heart's content. The rooms were clean and there were no bugs anywhere in our rooms!

The hotel is not near the town of Manuel Antonio and it is a hassel to get there so we didn't really leave the resort except to book a night hike and a tour through the national park.

The restaurant was excellent. We also had lunch by the pool, which was very nice. My favorite drink was the pineapple mint fruit smoothie...we had one every day! The staff was AMAZING there!

Our rooms were down by the beach. Although it wasn't a great view, I was very happy. We were on the first floor and the balcony had mini spa pool. I wanted to but we didn't have a chance to actually use it. The bathrooms were large (although I wish they provided house slippers to walk around in) and the bed was very comfortable. I loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves. To note, the waves are very loud because of the size of the waves and the amount of undertow and rocks in the area. So although I wouldn't swim at the beach, it was nice to have the sound as a backdrop. The perfect place to laze around all day and lay at the beach. Would definitely return!

We spent 5 nights in an Ocean View King. The room was very comfortable....we slept great! Awesome sound of the Pacific waves crashing below. We were in Building 7 (six units per building for a total of 42). This is closest to the pool, spa, restaurant and reception, but furthest from Playitas beach. No worries though as there was always a cart with a friendly driver to take you down the steep and windy path to the beach. The beach was very private and simply beautiful. There was a restaurant and bar here - amazing mojito's, fresh salads, etc. Dinners at El Mirador were also very good. Arenas Del Mar is well positioned for adventures such as Manuel Antonio, canopy zip lining, white eater rafting etc. We caught a ride to Manual Antonio for $10 each, walk through the rainforest to the beach. Arenas Del Mar is the only hotel that has a beach adjacent to Manual Antonio so we walked back along the beach to the resort. This isn't the type of resort lined with beach chairs and umbrellas. We walked to end and saw no chairs but found two exceptional attendants who brought chairs out for us from underneath the rainforest cover, two cold Imperial beers, and towels! The service everywhere was personal and friendly. Staff remembers your name and greet you wherever you go. Costa Rica is beautiful and Arenas Del Mar is an amazing experience.

My boyfriend and I traveled to Manuel Antonio after a wonderful stay in Arenal. Although initially we thought our disappointment stemmed from the spoiling and attention we received at the Arenal Nayara Hotel, when we look at all the facts, we've concluded that this hotel is just plain average.

We rented a car in Costa Rica, so we were lucky enough to traverse down the steep one lane road to the hotel on the beach in our rental car. One of the prices you have to pay to be on the beach! This location, although ideal for the beach, really makes you a bit more secluded from the rest of the town. It often seemed to us that the staff were trying to 'keep us there' and ensure that our experience at Manuel Antonio was endured at the hotel only. Given that we had a car, we were sure that this was not to be the case.

We reserved a room directly with the hotel, specifically requesting a room on the 2nd floor, which we were provided. Upon checking into the room, I was a bit disappointed. The room looked like it had seen better days. The tile was a bit worn, both in the main room as well as in the bathroom. The shower was okay. The sliding door to the patio didn't fully latch, so much that we could see daylight between the door and the frame. We are sure this is where all of our bug bites came from!

The first night we were there it rained, and after having driven so far and worried (me) that we couldn't make it back up that steep hill, we stayed and ate at the main restaurant. It seemed as though the chef LOVED balsamic. It was drizzled over everything...so much that it seemed like the chef was more concerned about appearance than about taste. We (I) vowed we could tackle that road back up to the main drag for the next dinner!

Sleeping at Arenas del Mar was a struggle. There was a tap-tap-tapping that seemed to originate in the walls one night, and moved around from one end of the room to the other. It was so loud it woke us up, many times. The next evening, we decided to have a couple more drinks to ensure a more 'sound' sleep, but alas the tapping began on the wall. It honestly was awful. We love the wildlife, but we're sure it was living in the walls. We resorted to both of us sleeping with our iPod's on, trying to drown out the racket

The next day, we hit Manuel Antonio and then Playitas for lunch. Playitas was awesome. There was great service, great food, and the monkeys provided great entertainment.

That evening the rain began when we were in the pool for our pre-happy hour swim. We resorted to our room to get ready for the evening. By about 6:00, we realized that the A/C stopped working. We stopped at the front desk to request maintenance, because the 100% humidity was going to be rough to sleep with (on top of the tap-tap-tapping!). When we returned to our room, the A/C looked like it had been fixed, with an 'override' or some sort of message flashing. We were relieved until about midnight, when we woke up in a sweat. Every couple hours from there on out, we had to turn off the A/C to restart it. We would get an hour or two out of it, then it would be back to sweltering heat.

On top of all of this, the dear boyfriend became ill. We're unsure if this happened with food or water at the hotel, as it could have easily happened elsewhere; however, we do know of two other guests that had stomach issues. Clearly, not a great way to end our trip.

We do have to say that we truly enjoyed the company of the bartenders at the hotel. They were great fun and very attentive to our wishes. As were the guys who drove the golf carts around the property. They were always a joy to be with.

Overall, we sorry to say that we likely will not stay in this resort again.

Dear laaruns:

Thank you for your thorough review of your stay. We were happy to read that you had a lot of positive impressions with your stay, but very concerned about the negative experiences you had. We feel that were we failed most was not catching the problems on time as they could have been easily corrected. Sorry about this and while the explanations below might be useful, it does not reverse your experience. Be assured that your comments are valuable feedback for us and make us get even better. Below the answers to some of your concerns.

The floors at the resort are old colonial Costa Rica tile that was used in houses in colonial times. It is not as clean-cut as Italian marble, but local, sustainable, somewhat rustic looking but always clean. We wish you would have told us about the tap-tapping that seems to have been your most serious problem and that could have been solved quite easily. Most likely, the sound you heard were Halloween crabs that migrate from the beach to the rainforest at the beginning of rainy season and sometimes get “lost” in the rooms. We could have gotten rid of them for you quite easily to ensure you good night sleep.

The problem with the Air Conditioning is not excusable and we apologize for that inconvenience. We also hope that your boyfriend has recovered from the stomach problems. We are quite sure that the problem did not generate at Arenas del Mar as we have the highest standards of hygiene and our drinking water is treated and tested periodically. Again, we are happy to hear that you had great contact with the staff at the hotel.

We hope we get a second chance some day to provide you with the experience you were expecting and that our guests typically receive. All the best,

The Management

We just returned from 9 glorious days at Arenas Del Mar.

All the great reviews are true. The hotel is amazing, we stayed in an Ocean Breeze Suite ( 502A). It was great. Close to the main restaurant but not too close. The rooms was beautiful. The shower was super cool with the glass blocks (don't worry they are glazed). The linens on the bed were soft and the bed was really comfortable. When we got to San Jose, we caught the earlier Sansa flight but they could not take both of our bags. I was concerned I would never see my stuff again. Sansa not only called the hotel to change our pick up but also alerted them when the bags did arrive and the hotel delivered them to our room. Amazing!

We ate every day and night at the hotel. It's a little bit of a drive to get to the main road to Manuel Antonio and we were too relaxed and lazy to leave. The spa was amazing. I had two great massages (Brisas and Hot Stone) from Natalia. The service is on par with any large spa in the US. They don't have sauna etc but it's too hot for that anyway and we had a jacuzzi on our balcony.

The service was second to none. Jeffery at the bar, Cristina, Jeanette, Danny, Victor.. everyone we encountered was so friendly and helpful. I did not get everyone's names that helped us as the staff was almost the same as the number of guests. Thank you all for making our trip so special. The food was great, good variety, specials each night and the prices were not bad. Most entrees were $20. Lunch was around $6 to $10. We live in LA so that is pretty cheap to us.

We did two tours, MA park and the horseback ride. Gustavo was our guide to MA and he was fabulous. We hiked up to Cathedral Point. it was a journey but worth it. We also went horseback riding with Valentin and it was the best trip I've been on. I'll write a review there too but it was so peaceful riding through the river. I am nervous on horseback but his horses were great.

Do not be fooled by the hills on property though, they will kick your butt. It's a good elevation change from Playitas to the reception and again to the parking area. There are golf carts available and they are just a quick call away. We enjoyed the walking though we did take a cart sometimes. You can walk Espadilla to Manuel Antonio town in about 25 mins along the beach. It's a beautiful walk. The locals were friendly and we never felt in danger.

The beaches are clean and nice. Playitas is great because there is shade as well as hotel service. It is a public beach but the restrooms and services, chairs etc are for guests only and no one bothered us. There is a pretty good rip tide so be cautious in the water. There are signs everywhere warning people.

All in all one of the best trips we've been on.

maybe it is because i really needed time away from home. maybe it is because i was so looking forward to visiting costa rica and i had heard so much about it. but i think it was the most beautiful place in the world. the kids did not want to leave anymore, and neither did we. we spent two wonderful weeks at arenas del mar. we got to know the surroundings, and appreciate the country but also got the know the staff and the resort quite well. they are wonderful people, providing best service, and always making you feel very special. what was different about the staff was the fact that they knew how to help as if they were the host and respectful friend, and not the employee. the food was outstanding with such a large selection and excellent quality of organic dishes, that the meals outside the resort made us only miss the hotel more... animals, jungle. ocean, pools, trips, tours, high adrenaline adventures, and then each afternoon coming back to the resort... just perfect. maybe the cleaning girls could do a better job daily. a little bit sloppy for my taste, and i am not talking about the ecology choice, which i understand and deeply appreciate. the spa was very very nice too. i miss the place already and we are most definitely planing to go back soon. silvia, good luck with your wonderful job you are doing there for the sustainability aspect of the resort! my girls hope our trees planted there are growing well :)
