“Very Expensive and Pricey - Just OK and no so great”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

Group of 16 stayed recently at 2 Bedroom Villas, Bunglow and Jr. Suite. Shuttle waiting time is way too much and takes longer. Beach services closes at sharp 5pm even in summer and it's too early. You can not get towels or chairs even at five minutes before 5pm. Shuttle services closes at 10pm along with reception, which makes it hard. It's very hard to walk to the beach access as it is very stiff and private beach is just ok, not worth the money. Breakfast is not included in rent and restaurant is very expensive, food is very bad and pasta sucks, Pizza if ok. Of course their Villas is very modern and awesome but bungalows is very outdated and requires lot of attentions. Very old furniture, extremely bad condition bathroom and not working 2 burner electric grill; where they have replaced it with one burner portable electric grill on top of the 2 burner unit. Old microwave. Overall very expensive and very pricey. Too far to walk to town and beach area. Pool are is clean and nice but only one has bar and restaurant. Other Pool has bar but closed and not open at all. Housekeeping service upon request only and cleaning job is just ok. There are plenty of other choices and you should look for other options as it's not worth paying for just beach access here. Better restaurant choices with nice view near town, which is far from here. Their shuttle service does not go outside of the resort property and not even to nearby grocery store. Grocery store can deliver if you call direct instead of thru resort, where they charge 10% service fee. Shuttle driver are not friendly and does not provide courtesy service at all. It's too far and too hard to walk to from one Villas to another Bungalows. Very poor Wi-Fi and internet speed for upload. Not all units have access but you need to find and look for better reception of Wi-Fi. Do not stay at their Bungalows or Jr. Suites but stay at Villa's if you can afford. Its very expensive though and be careful with your bill/invoice at check-out, some one else signed twice for very large check/ticket of bar and restaurant bill, which does not belongs to us. They had removed it at check-out once we noticed it and told them about it. Look for better other options and save some $$$$$.

Sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. So many issues many outside our control, i.e. distance. So I’ll try to address this as logically as possible and only issues we can affect
The Select Villas are roughly 10 years old and are maintained on an annual basis
The Premium Villas are roughly 8 years old and on the same schedule
We do not have the licensing to send our drivers off property that requires a limo license though we are glad to do it on property.
Sorry you did not enjoy, Pura Vida!

My husband and I just got home from our 10 day stay in Costa Rica. It was a beautiful, beautiful country and one we will certainly re-visit.

We spent a few days in Arenal before we arrived for our week long stay at Buena Vista Villas in a torrential downpour. We were greeted by our concierge, Brayan. As he & another staff member shuttled us in a van, then ushered us & our luggage under umbrellas to our villa, it quickly became clear the level of service we were going to receive. Brayan, then explained the layout of the grounds, the services that were available and the amenities of our room. He also left us his number so that he could help us with anything we might need. Throughout the week we were able to reach him easily and he attended quickly to an issue we had with our air conditioner; booked our excursions, made reservations at local restaurants, arranged transportation, and ensured groceries were delivered (again in torrential downpour!). In addition to his dedicated, calm professionalism, Brayan is also a funny, genuine, and truly nice person who we enjoyed hanging out with. We were so lucky to have him as our concierge!

On Brayan's day off, he arranged for another concierge, Eduardo, to help us out! Eduardo was extremely helpful, ensuring that we were taken care of. He did a great job recommending local restaurants & taking care of transportation. He was really personable & funny.

Overall the entire staff at Buena Vista Villas, was professional, personable and fun to be around. From our concierges, to the drivers in the shuttles, to the restaurant/bar, and landscape staff. It was so nice to be surrounded by such a genuine staff who were so dedicated to making your experience at the hotel and in the country, enjoyable.

In addition to the excellent staff, we have nothing but positive experiences to share regarding our room and the hotel grounds. Our room, a Jr. Suite (2O5), was lovely. It was helpful to have a sink, counter and small fridge. The bed and couch area were comfortable. The small balcony, with two chairs, table & hammock - where we spent most of our time in the room - was the show stopper!! We had an incredible view of the beautiful grounds and the Pacific. We watched beautiful sunsets nearly every night. We were also able to watch a troop of squirrel monkeys pass by as we sat outside!

The entire property was gorgeous, with flowers, plants and wildlife everywhere. It was well maintained and we often were greeted by the kind landscaping staff who never hesitated to point out monkeys or sloths! The property is huge, and hilly, so do bear that in mind when you are planning to go to the beach, pools or restaurants (on or off site). Shuttle service and/or taxis (to off site locations) can be arranged easily by calling your concierge or the front desk. Some days we walked while others we opted to walk to our destinations, within or outside of the grounds.
Often, Mike drove us around the property and he was always funny and helpful.

We went to 2 of the 3 pool areas (not the family pool). Both we visited were clean and beautiful. We ate breakfast at the restaurant by the infinity pool and it was excellent, as was the lunch service. Pamela, a bartender near the pool and restaurant area always provided attentive and friendly service.

One morning we hiked the South Trail to the beach, those paths were well maintained and you will encounter a waterfall which was a nice surprise! The beach area on the property is incredible, it has a spectacular view & is the perfect place to relax for an afternoon and catch some sun. Towels, chairs, umbrellas, drinks and meals are all available there. The service on the beach was consistent with the excellent service we described previously. Also, you will almost certainly encounter more wildlife here - from iguanas, to monkeys (we saw both squirrel and howlers).

We highly recommend Buena Vista Villas, for the incredible service, well appointed rooms, beautiful views, gorgeous grounds and proximity to fun local restaurants/bars and excursions. Pura Vida!

We stayed in villa 402 which did not have a king bed as shown on the site. Both bedrooms had two double beds. The overall suite was very spacious and well appointed. The bathroom broke a few times but was fixed quickly. This is one of only two properties in Manuel antonio with beach access except for the small places down by the public beach. The beach is small and fairly rocky but does offer kayaks and boogie boards although you need to be careful for the rocks. We did see two sloths but no monkeys at this unit. There is no place to eat dinner on site but there is a great Italian place, Victoria's across the street. They offer shuttles to drive you up and down the steep roads to the pools and beach. For the price, I would have expected a king in the master but otherwise it's a nice place.

We arrived to Buena Vista Villas after a stay at a truly luxury resort in La Fortuna so we had been pampered for 4 days prior to arriving to be fair in this review!

The property is so huge that you have to adjust your thinking to catching the shuttle to go pretty much anywhere unless your near a pool which most bungalows are near one. Once you get used to that, it becomes natural so no problems there.

We stayed in the Jr. Suite and found the accommodations pretty average. The was good and bad but we were there for the room so it's a non-issue.

There aren't any restaurants or anything of the sort on the property so prepare to venture out which should be done on vacation anyway so it worked wonderful. There are phenomenal restaurants within walking distance- I want to move to Manuel Antonio just to go to Milagros everyday.

The service isn't on point but you don't stay here for the service. You stay here because of the amazing wildlife encounters you have. We didn't visit the Manuel Antonio Park because we saw everything on the property grounds. Tons of monkeys everywhere. There was a huge old howler monkey that climbed the trees every evening at dusk and would climb down every morning. I became obsessed with catch great pictures of him.

I don't know what the other places have to offer but I would stay here again for the location, private beach, and property!

Thank you for writing a review. I’m not sure of your feelings on the Jr. Suite (Deluxe Room), but it seems as though it was a “non-issue”; good I don’t like our guests to have issues. As far as eating goes we do offer two current dining opportunities, one at the family pool and one at the beach. And in the near future we are opening a restaurant at the bungalow pool called Buena Vista Del Sol which will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner! Glad to hear the wildlife was not an issue either! Thanks for your stay, Pura Vida- The Staff

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Costa Rica. We loved the country. This property was so disapointing however. We too found that there was no closet to speak of and never unpacked suitcases. The room was not freshly cleaned and we had some dead bugs on the floor and the toilet was black inside with mildew. The floor felt gritty. We did notify the staff and they cleaned the next morning and said the toilet had a part that needed to be replaced so this had made the water look dirty. They did fix toilet and it was better but still flushed slowly. The whole room is so dated. The air conditioner is right over the head of the bed so we had sore throats if we left it on during the night. I have never seen such a poor design. The safe was on the fllor and we used it once, it would not reopen and had to call the front desk. The manager called and just gave us a default code and it opened. Did not bother to use it again and kept valuables with us. The mattress looked to be very old as everything else in the room was. We saw many other nearby properties that we will try next time. The bigger villas looked completely different and the pictures never show the jr suite. We hate to complain while on the trip so will just not return to this property. The service from the drivers and the concergie are very outstanding. The view is fabulous. We will visit Costa Rica again and loved the people and all of the tours. This was booked through Costa Rica vacations and I called to provide feedback and did not get a return call.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I'm sorry you felt you had a negative experience in our Jr. Suite. You said the property was so disappointing, but it appears all of your complaints were with the unit you choose. For example, the closet is not spacious, but is on a par with most hotels in the US. A Jr. Suite is the same as a hotel room with the exception of the outside patio with a table and two chairs and a hammock (and mostly with fabulous views). The guest checked in late in the day and the room was cleaned in the morning. We are in the middle of a rain forest and it is impossible to keep every bug out of a unit. We apologize for the toilet issue, as noted it was a rusty part which was replaced when pointed out to our concierge. We agree the safes are inconvenient to use and we are in the process or replacing them with larger safes capable of holding a laptop and we will be moving them to waist level for guest convenience. As far as not showing pictures, this isn't true. If you go to the accommodations click on Jr. Suite and click on photo gallery at the bottom of the page, those photos are all of a Jr. Suite for future guests who wish to look at one. We are very happy that you appreciated the good service from our staff and the fabulous view (your words) from the unit. We hope on your next trip you will consider giving us another chance, Pura Vida, The Staff

Besides the minor slip upon arrival, that the manger and customer service fixed with out hesitation . My stay at Buena Vista was Perfection!

Stayed in a villa over looking the ocean , it was more then enough space for 3-4adults... The family pool is where most people hang out at because of the food at bar.Family pool never felt over crowed or loud, it was great! The private adult pool was nice and serine peacful, I do suggest that management has some one there during the day, to stock towels or even take food n drink orders, to walk to family pool to order drinks and food can become tedious . Not a complaint but a suggestion even if its from 11am-3pm to have some one there for orders n stocking towels.

The hotel was great, they went food shopping for us. Made list if things we would like, and when we came back to the room the food was there put up in fridge . They do just about EVERTHING to make sure your stay is perfect.

Every day your host will come and check up on us too make sure we was ok and you have plans for the day, pointed us in right direction of tours we wanted . I HIGHLY suggest ADR Adventure was great!

The property is very hilly , but you can call a vsn to pick you up n take you to where u wanna go on the property, the walking isn't so bad though. It's a good cardio while on vaca

The private beach, had a kitchen served great breakfast and brunch . Sitting on beach eating under the trees was amazing.

Room was cleaned daily , at anytime you requested it to be cleaned. On days we slept in (everyday) when we got up n out, made the call for room to be service Maria would clean it .

I left my jacket in my room when I left Costa Rica,I emailed and requested it to mailed to me , it showed up 10days later with no fuss. Buena Vista is above par establishment

The trip was excellent, def will stay here again and will tell others ...

PURA VIDA !!

We had a Three Bedroom Premium Villa near the adult pool and about half way between the reception area (road entrance) and the beach. Very nice modern villas comprise of three floor. Main floor is the top floor which has a view of the forest and ocean from our villa. Large outside deck with hot tub, lounging area, and a table that can seat 8 people. Second floor (one down) has two bedrooms with queen size beds and private baths. Showers and toilet are open air but very private. There is a washer and dryer on the second level if needed. Third floor (2 down or 40 steps below living area) has large spacious master bedroom with king size bed and private bath (showers and toilet are open air but very private and sink and dressing tables are inside the room). All rooms and areas have individual air conditioners.

Amenities consist of 3 swimming pools and a medium to small beach area. Adult pool is small and has only seating for 6 in lounge chairs. No bar or phone for ordering food. The family pool has a well equipped bar and a small food service for hot and cold sandwiches and other things. Family pool is larger than the adult pool (1 1/2 times larger than adult pool) and has a waterfall feature and an infinitive edge with a view of the ocean. Seating is limited to 4-6 lounge chairs and a table with seating for 6. The third pool is closer to the beach and is about the same size as the family pool. There suppose to be a wine bar at the third pool (in the evening 6-9 pm) but it was not open while we were there (not reason given expect for shortage of staff). Beach is nice with food and drink service and ample seating and umbrellas, if desired. Kayaks are included in the room package. The property is very steep so be ready for a lot of stairs and steep walks or roads. There is a free shuttle service available on the property but you still have to traverse a lot of steps and steep paved paths to get to shuttle pickup areas. Sometimes there is a long wait for a shuttle.

There is no evening restaurant on site. There are several good restaurants within a short walk of the entrance area (we recommend Victoria's and Kopi Kopi). Your can order in to your room and have food also delivered from Victoria's).

Staff were very nice and accommodating.

Room Tip: We were in the low 400 numbered villas. I think that was a good location for adults and near the c...
