I traveled with my 70 year old father and 12 year old nephew and Buena Vista Villas was a great place for all three of us! The accomodations were lovely and clean. The two bedroom villa with kitchen and beautiful porches gave us plenty of room. It was great to have a washer and drier in our villa. The beach restaurant was perfect for breakfast and we all had a wonderful time swimming in the ocean and in the family pool just below our villa. Orlando, our concierge, was super helpful and everyone was very kind and courteous. We'd booked some excursions through our travel agent and Orlando confirmed all of the arrangements and made sure that things ran smoothly. He also gave us some terrific restaurant recommendations. It was a terrific place for a family vacation.

Thanks for the good review! Glad to hear everyone enjoyed. Yes the existence of the washer/ dryer and the kitchen in the Premium Villas is fantastic. The kitchen enables you to try our private chef service, not to be missed and kitchens have blenders too for those blended sunset libations. Guest can arrange to have kitchens stocked beforehand too! Or call the concierge to arrange anything you might need. Thanks for staying and don’t forget to come back, Pura Vida, The Staff

Just returned from Buena Vista Villas and it was a great spot for a family. We stayed on this property at the end of our Costa Rican trip, after staying in two other locations in the country. For our family of four, the 2 Bedroom Villa was over the top beautiful and spacious. Two stories with the bedrooms on the lower level, the view from the the huge veranda was breathtaking. The monkeys right outside our balcony were fun too! Get ready for some interesting and un paralleled Howler Monkey sounds! The showers are walled on 3 sides, but at the same time are completely outside .. so it is open to 'critters' if you will. We did spot a few geckos and a frog out there, but no monkeys or anything crazy. Just took a little getting used to. The toilets are also outside, in a little nook as you enter the shower area. (there is regular indoor half bath on the main level).

Our concierge, and any other concierge around was very helpful throughout the stay... but there are no real services on the property. They will drive you to the beach, as it is a sprawling and hilly property. Beach is nice .. different as it's brown/black sand. Water is warm like a bath.. and waves were fun!

For a family traveling, I absolutely recommend Casa (Villa) 412, it is RIGHT next to the family swimming pool, and has incredible views of the ocean far below at the same time. It truly felt like we had access to our own pool (although it was always busy -not overly busy- with lots of other families as well.) There was lunch service at the pool, which was nice.

Location of hotel is very nicely located in proximity to grocery, and all of the restaurants in the area. And very close to the Nat'l Park as well.

Enjoy Buena Vista!

Room Tip: Villa 412 for families is AWESOME

The property and views are amazing. We saw more wildlife enjoying the natural surroundings everyday than one would find in a tropical zoo. Regular sightings of sloths, monkeys (3 types), toucans and countless other tropical birds.
Beautiful private beach. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
Often need the shuttle to get around the property, but they are always available at a moments notice.

Room Tip: There was no pull-out sofa in our one room select suite villa, but they provided a roll-away when we...

Thanks for your review. Yes, the property has amazing wildlife; we often hear it said that our property’s fauna exceeds the national parks. First, the Good. This is a spectacular property. The setting is beautiful, the buildings are well designed and maintained, the beach is lovely, pools are nice, poolside bar is great, the location in town is good -- walking distance to some good restaurants.

Although there are separate entries for "Tulemar Bungalows" on tripadvisor, this is all one property. The Buena Vista villas are just bigger and fancier (and more expensive). From what I could see, the bungalows are nice, private, and spacious enough. The Buena Vista villas are huge and gorgeous. The architecture is spectacular. The views are spectacular. The decorating is very nicely done -- much nicer than you would expect in a resort condo -- and high end materials (lots of marble, granite, and wood) are everywhere. This is super-luxury in terms of the physical property.

The Disappointment. The service, does not match the quality of the property. It does not come close. There are some individuals who show some understanding of what 5-star service should be. But the majority of the staff seem not to be well trained or committed to high end service.

There was no truiy bad experience, but many small shortcomings. Staff at the front desk letting me stand for several minutes before stopping their conversation to ask if I needed something. No towels at the pool. No hand towels in the office restroom. Slow response to requests regarding the room. A poor guide contracted for the park tour (he wasn't ready when we arrived, ignored our requests to focus on animals instead of beaches, and spent a lot of time talking or texting on his phone to family/friends). Poor communication about the operation of the jacuzzi (apparently one is supposed to use leftover water from the previous guest--and many floating bugs--as the tub drain is sealed!). Poor communication/outright confusion about where to meet for tour transportation. The comment "Everyone is in a hurry, sir" when we told our breakfast waiter that we would need to leave for a tour in 45 minutes (30 minutes later our coffee arrived!).

None of this was bad enough to ruin anything, but this is far too much to go wrong in even a 4-star resort, and none of this should happen in a place that aspires to be a 5-star property charging $600+/night. Overall, the staff gave the feeling of low-paid employees of a management company contracted out to run a resort, not a professional staff vested in the experience of their guests. I might not have minded most of this if I were paying <$200/night, but for the price of a BV luxury unit one has a right to expect much more.

So despite the very strong features of the property itself, I was disappointed with the overall experience. My recommendation is to either stay in a Bungalow here (where the price is more in line with the service), or stay somewhere else.

We would like to thank you for the high praise you had for our property, From the beautiful setting, the design of our individual villas, bungalows and casas, to the overall maintenance of our property and our exclusive beach and beautiful pools as well as proximity to restaurants, banks and a grocery store. Your description of all of our units is quite accurate. Most of the bungalows while nice and private do not have outside space, while all of our larger units all have private decks for outside living including hot tubs on the deck in all of our premium villas.
You state that there was no truly bad experience, but many small shortcomings. We accept this criticism. We work hard to train our staff to deliver a high quality of service as many of the other reviewers support, however in your case we fell short and we sincerely apologize. We will certainly review the guides we contract park tours with, as we do expect all of our vendors to provide our guests with a high quality experience. As for the hot tubs, they are cleaned daily and treated. They are always drained after each guest departs. As for bugs, it is the middle of the jungle and we cannot guarantee that we can keep bugs out 24/7! We do not state we are a 5 star resort, but we do work hard to earn the reputation of a 4 star resort. You've pointed out a number of small areas where you felt we could have done better and will share your comments with our staff to help support their growth.

We completed the 2nd half of our honeymoon at Buena Vista Villas- and have to give it a just okay in the villa based in our experience.

There is no other view that I could imagine being as beautiful- and I have never experienced such beautiful sunsets. We were visited by spider monkeys, howlers, Cappachinos, iguanas and had so much fun watching them all.

However, the "junior suite" is not a suite at all. I found it to be small, cramped without even having a place to store clothes. The safe is on the floor in the back of a small closet - I'm only in my mid 40's and could barely get up and down to the safe.

The door has to be locked with a key from the inside (such as when going to bed....)- strange. There was no Wifi connection in the junior suite and I would have to walk up the sidewalk to get connection.

From what I have read and with visiting with other guests, it's a completely different experience if you are in one of the large villas- I can only share our own experience.

Service was lacking - twice we were told that a car or taxi was enroute and that we would be called when they arrived- the Calls never happened and the cars / taxis were waiting on us...

Our lights in our room never worked - they fixed them once after the 2nd notification but they still didn't work. It's a beautiful view but felt as if I had just rented a villa on my own without being part of a property. Caveat to that was Micheal who was a driver and incredibly helpful and always prompt. When micheal was off - we waited 30 minutes for the shuttle to come pick us up from the beach -

The beach, like the views, was amazing and we loved it. I think we would go back if we had the kids and a large villa - but I'm not sure and we would certainly look at other options first.

Dear NKS2013
I am very glad to hear that you enjoyed our spectacular property, our beautiful gardens and our magnificent beach and all of the wildlife you encountered. Our guests are always amazed at what they see on our property. I’m sorry you felt the Jr. Suite was cramped. The Jr. Suites are essentially oversized hotel rooms with extras like an oversized patio with great views, a table, two chairs and a relaxing hammock. Inside the room you have either two-queen beds, a king bed a table and chairs or day bed, a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and dishes and glasses. The bathroom is as spacious as any hotel bath in the United States. Yes the safe is on the floor and we know that is an inconvenience. We have plans to move the safes to chest level in the coming months and we appreciate your bringing this to our attention. We do have Wi-Fi throughout the property, including at the beach, so I’m at a loss as to your experience. We will definitely test the connection. Thank you for your very positive remarks regarding Michael and the service he provided while you were our guests. I’m sorry you were not notified that your taxis were waiting. We pride ourselves on our service and will certainly discuss your complaint with the desk staff. We work hard to make our guests comfortable and happy while on the property and we hope you will give us a second chance on your next trip to Costa Rica.

the word "luxury" in the name is unjustified. In 206 , and probably others of the description "junior suite", only a backpacker could regard what is provided as luxury. there is nowhere to store your clothes, toiletries etc. Correction; there is a broom cupboard. literally. there was a broom in it. there are also a couple of vegetable racks, taking roughly 50 per cent of one persons clothes. under these racks, some lunatic put the safe. on the floor. a contortionist might find that acceptable. when you are over 60, it is an insult to be left with that as secure storage. the word "suite" implies a sitting room separate from the bedroom. not here. one room serves as bedroom, siting room, and kitchen Why a kitchen? who books a luxury villa and expects to cook? who wants the sink and micro wave next to their bed. it is pitiful. the staff are lovely. the fault lies with the bean counters in Chicago, who represent the owners, and the cheese paring budget allocated to construction of these miserable hovels.

This is a difficult one . This guest was told repeatedly before booking that the property was very steep and anyone reading Tripadvisor would know this fact. Before we had even arrived at the room the guest was telling us it was unacceptable and asking for other accommodations. We did everything we could, including moving them to another unit nothing worked. We offered to refund their money and then drove them to 5 different hotels in the area. They simply wouldn’t go; they stayed with us the full term of their stay and we did everything we could to make their stay pleasant. The Staff
