“Perfect place to stay, close to the park, beaches, restaurants, all within 5 minutes”
Reviewed May 9, 2010

We stayed at La Posada for 3 nights. We had reserved the Monkey Room, but when we got there they offered us the villa which had just become available. It was a bit more expensive, but the upgrade was well worth it, considering we were 5 people, the extra room and bathroom was definitely a plus. The staff was very helpful, and were always responsive to our requests. The buffet style breakfast was great, lots of fruits, yummy!! The pizza they make in house was excellent and a great value.

The pool is small but great for a refreshing dip. They have boogie boards and snorkel gear for guests to use (although the snorkel gear could be cleaner) and they provide towels for the beach. You can usually book tours through them and save 10-20%. the first night we lost power for 3 hours and went down the road to eat dinner and we discovered Costa Linda. It is a backpackers hostel and it has a small restaurant. What a gem, we ate there 3 more times, $40. for 5 people, great fruit drinks, fish and fries to name a few items.

The kids really enjoyed feeding the deer that visited every morning,

Manuel Antonio is a great park, I don't know why anyone would tell you not to go here. It may be a bit touristy compared to other Costa Rican places (which means not at all touristy in American terms), but the park is amazing, we got in late and didn't realized they were closed on Monday so we only had an hour and a half to go into the park (we wished we'd had a full day). We debated not going since we had so little time, but I'm glad we did because in that short period of time we saw three species of monkeys, a sloth, dear, a baby possum, and numerous birds. A must for anyone going to Costa Rica. We did go to Osa peninsula and they are just different even though people compare them. It is nice to have access to restaurants and a nice beach in Manuel Antonio while you are very isolated and only eating at your lodge in Osa (the isolation is part of the reason to go though). We loved both, they are just different.

As for La Posada, the staff was helpful offering trips, which is nice. We went on a Quad tour which was a lot of fun. My wife really enjoyed it, it includes a stop and a short hike to a waterfall. The rooms at Las Posada are clean with AC, the decor is a bit cheese, but it is nice having your own room without connecting walls.

Pros:
Great location right next to the park entrance
Free breakfast
Good value
Pool
Air conditioned rooms
Own room/bungalow seperate from other rooms so no noise through walls

Cons:
Decor is a little cheesy, sliding doors to get in and out.

WARNING: there is a scam (not anything to do with La Posada) on the main road outside Manuel Antonio park where independent guides will wave you down and tell you that you have to go with them to get into the park, just keep driving. The park entrance (right next to La Posada) is down a little skinny road and can be difficult to find, so just ask someone not trying to sell a tour.

My teen daughter and I just returned from La Posada. Esteban, Jonathan, Mike and team could not have been any nicer. We enjoyed the property, their breakfast and their concern for their guests.

We had a great experience.

This is not luxury accomodation - but provides everything a family on the go could ask for - comfortable, clean, functional rooms, great amenities (frig in room, internet access, able to buy snacks and drinks, use of boogie boards, dvd's), great breakfast, perfect location - right outside the park, short walk to beach and stores, helpful staff, and the small size lends itself to meeting other guests, which adds a great element to your vacation. We stayed in the monkey room, which had 2 queen/double and a single, frig, coffee maker, air - no issues. Can't stress how good the location is - some could go to park while others were at beach or went shopping - you can't do that with the hotels on the hill - really gives you more flexibility to be able to walk everywhere.

We stayed at La Posada for 5 nights of our trip and it was really great. Mike & Jonathan were super helpful with all our questions and we got a discount on the excursions we booked with them. We stayed in one of the jungle bungalows and they had a microwave & fridge, which was really really nice. The rooms were cleaned well every day and we saw no bugs in our room (which wasn't the case at our next place, a much more expensive hotel in a different city). They have dinners 3 nights a week you can join in on, and a few other nights Mike planned some outings to good local restaurants/night spots for all of the guests to go to if you wanted (but there was no pressure, which was also good). They have DVDs you can take & watch in your room and will make pizza for you in the afternoon if you like. There is also a computer in the common area you can use for the Internet, but it was nice to be "unplugged" for a little while! It's not overly fancy, but you don't need it to be, and Costa Rica is not the place to go if you want a 5 star fancy hotel anyway. I've seen some reviews saying Manual Antonio is overly built or built-up, and I'm not sure where those people are from. I disagree--it has the right amount of things going on without being built up like Mexico is---definitely go here. The hotel is a short walk to the beach & at the entrance to the park, which is super convenient, and we didn't need a car the whole time we were in Manual Antonio. I am extremely picky and I would highly recommend this hotel.

Our extended family of 5 enjoyed a two night stay in this hotel’s Villa, which was just perfect for our group. We particularly enjoyed the Villa’s great air-conditioning in this hot locale, and the nice cooling pool. Our little house was kept very clean by an excellent house-keeping staff. Space is a bit tight on the small grounds, so it's easy to get to know the other guests in this cozy atmosphere.

Mike is a terrific host, and organized an evening out at a local restaurant with music for guests that was great fun. He and his staff do everything they can to make visitors welcome, from organizing meals to free phone calls, Wifi, and first run DVD’s. Each morning we enjoyed a wonderful included breakfast.

Although the hotel is right at the edge of the Park, it is still a busy and somewhat crowded area. The beaches are beautiful here, and there are many amenities for visitors. It had been over 20 years since our last visit and we were amazed at the changes both in the Park and local area. So much of the wildlife here has been habituated to human contact that it no longer feels like one is seeing the wild and natural side of Costa Rica. We were surprised that the hotel encouraged wildlife feeding, and while it gave us a chance to see and photograph animals up close, we still had mixed feelings about this practice.
