The staff are friendly and attentive. The food (especially breakfast) is delicious. The setting/views are incomparable. Every day we woke up and couldn't believe how beautiful this place is. Getting around the hotel involves quite a few stairs but it is so worth it! There is so much privacy and the views are spectacular.

Room Tip: The beds make a lot of noise when you turn over so if you're easily awakened that might bother y...

My husband and I spent four nights in villa number 5 last week. It's true the villas are private, very large, romantic, well equipped, very comfortable and with a sense that you are alone in the jungle. While the steps involved to reach the villas might be challenging for a few, my husband and I are in our mid-fifties and we enjoyed getting our legs in shape. I concur with all of the glowing reports here on tripadvisor! but also want to add that Leo (I think he is a manager) was so helpful and attentive to our every need. We loved marvelous Marvin at the bar was fun and very good at catering to us and making us laugh. We found everyone working at this resort to have such uplifting attitudes towards us and their work. I know it's been mentioned, but I must also write that the breakfast was such an unexpected treat. Breakfast is made to order off a menu and brought to the room within 30 minutes of calling for it. Usually it arrived within 15 minutes. The pool area is beautiful, with drinks delivered poolside anytime you desire. This place has so few rooms, that you feel such attentive care and every employee knows you by name within a day.

Room Tip: Check in advance for a villa with the fewest steps if this might be an issue for anyone in your part...

Just got back from 1 week at Makanda. We were very excited to be staying here and I can tell you that the hotel lives up to the pictures online. The view from the rooms and the pool are breathtaking. The restaurant serves excellent food; has an incredible view and a limited menu of course but we ate there twice and were not disappointed. Prices are about $12 a plate for lunch and $15-$24 a plate for dinner, maybe a little pricey sure but comparable to a hotel in the US, and considering the quality of the food it was worth it. My girlfriend had a chocolate brownie there that was one of the best brownies we ever tasted, I swear.

Staff is very nice, front desk/bartenders speak very good English, and are very personable. We had Darwin and Leo at the front desk and Christopher, Javier, and Marvin working different shifts in the bar/pool area while we were there, and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with all of them. (those are bonus points for those guys in case management is reading!) The private beach is also very nice, yes it is a bit of a walk down and back up from the hotel but it's worth it, very secluded, a little rocky, but still worth the walk down.

Very happy with our stay!

This exclusive resort is embedded within the Rain Forest of the Manuel Antonio area. There are only 8 villas or studios. Each with its own patio. We had stayed in Villa 8 and it's extremely spacious, has a kitchenette, large bathroom and a walk in closet. Breakfast is bought to you each morning based on the selection(s) you make the night before or that morning and the service is impeccable. If you work in a large city for a dog eat dog company, this is the place to go to to really decompress.

Room Tip: There are a lot of steps in this resort, so a villa will have a flight or 2 of steps less than a stu...

My husband and I stayed here for three nights and had a wonderful time! The ocean view from our room was perfectly framed by lush jungle. We sipped coffee in the mornings on our porch/balcony and watched toucans in the trees. The private beach here is amazing as well and the hike to get to it makes it even more special. The service was wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and personable. Also, their 2 for one happy hour is a fantastic way to relax by the pool (which also has an incredible ocean/jungle view) and watch the sunset. The food here was really well done although I felt their dinner menu was a bit limited and on the pricier end. I rated this hotel very good instead of excellent for a couple reasons. First, we lost power two of our three nights. It happened late at night, probably around 1 or 2 am so it wasn't a big deal but it did wake us up. Second, although the room was beautiful, it could benefit from an upgrade. Little things like new fixtures, flat screen TV's, etc... just a little more posh and "polish". Finally, the bed was incredibly noisy! Any time we turned over or adjusted in our sleep it would creek so loud it would wake me up. Overall, Makanda is a fantastic hotel and we would definitely return.

We stayed here for our honeymoon and had the greatest stay! It is down a small road - which seems to be were most of the upscale hotels are located. It really feels like you are in the jungle, since the rooms are setup as bungalows, so only two rooms to each bungalow, one on the top and one on the bottom. It felt very secluded and private - with only twelve rooms in the "rainy" season, it felt like we almost had the place to ourselves! The rooms were very clean, no bugs even with leaving the doors open for about a 1/2 hour in the evening. The beds were very comfy and we are very picky about hotel beds. The view from room #9 was of jungle and the ocean - perfect! The tiny bachelor kitchen was nice - but we never used it. The staff were great - by the pool they were very accomodating and fun to talk to! The best part is they bring you breakfast to your room at no additional charge, and also bring snacks, lunch, dinner or even drinks to your room at no additional charge! Great for a honeymoon. The pool was perfect with a great view. Highly recommend to anyone.

We love Makanda by the Sea. We were very pleased with the location, the room, the food and the service. Marvelous Marvin was our favorite and took great care of us during the trip. I can understand why some are bothered by the walk and stairs, but we are fairly young and in shape, so it really did not phase us. We loved the walk down to the public beach and the private beach, and walked up the hill to the main road most every day for a stop at the supermarket or one of the many fantastic restaurants. On food, I must say that the food at Makanda is fantastic. The breakfast every morning was probably my favorite. Two words: French Toast. (My husband also loved the Huevos Rancheros, but I am love sweet stuff in the morning). The fresh juice they brought was always so fresh and unique. We had lunch there twice and thought it was great as well (great portions and so fresh). We stayed in Villa 10 and found it to be clean and comfortable with an incredible view. The amenities at this place are so well thought-out: huge closet, large bathroom, nice kitchen, ipod docking station, free reliable internet and phone. Most importantly, we felt very safe at Makanda. There was always someone at the front gate and they got to know us quickly. I felt like they paid attention to where we were going - if we were getting in a cab, etc. (Not is a weird way, just a respectful manner of taking care of their guests). Thanks to everyone at Makanda for making our first Costa Rica experience the one that we will never forget.

Room Tip: Travel agent suggest Villa 10 and we were very pleased. Great view. I am sure that they would all be...
