“Watching The Sloths......”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

........parrots, toucans, agoutis and 3 different species of monkeys around our Villa #8. Makanda has more wildlife than we saw in Manuel Antonio National Park. The villa was private, it had an awesome view down a valley to the ocean. I swam and floated around all by myself under a gorgeous full moon it the incredible Makanda pool. Luxury and jungle, love it.
The staff were super helpful, there were a lot of people working there to make our stay memorial. I wish we had booked our whole vacation at Makanda, but we moved around a bit in Manuel Antonio. The bed and linens were heaven, one day I just crawled back in, I had opened all the balcony doors (the whole width of the villa) so as to watch the jungle go by.
Definitely stay here, it's magical.

We spent Christmas week at Makanda and did not want to leave. It is a quiet, secluded place with awesome views, an awesome infiniti pool, and an awesome staff, especially poolside. We could have spent the week in our hammock. Or by the pool. Or at the beach (either the private beach, which is very private, or the public beach a hop skip and a jump away, which had great people watching). The on-site restaurant was good, but there are many additional dining options just up the road (especially Cafe Milagro). On a scale of 1-10, Makanda is an 11. We will go back.

I stayed at Makanda with my boyfriend in November 2013. The rooms at Makanda are in free-standing villas, with the jungle behind them. One night we left for dinner and returned back to our room 1.5 hours later. We discovered that our door (which we had locked) was wide open and that the lights were on. There was a trail of muddy footprints leading up to our door. (See attached pictures.) As we discovered later, intruders had entered through the jungle to steal our belongings and had broken the lock with a crow bar (see attached pictures). Our laptop, iPad, camera, kindle, and several articles of clothing were taken (approximately $2,700 worth of items). Our passports, which were in the small safe, were not taken. We were moved to another room that night.

The next day, workers at the hotel found our clothing strewn around the jungle near our old room. The robbers apparently only wanted to keep the electronics. We had to cancel our tour of the park and instead go to the police station to fill out a police report. When we returned to the hotel, we spoke with the hotel's owner. He agreed to refund our stay at the hotel but refused to contribute anything towards the reimbursement of our stolen property. He said to us, "why would you bring stuff worth that much to a third world country"? My boyfriend told him that we thought we were staying at a luxury hotel. He also stated that the hotel would not reimburse us at all for these items because the hotel does not have insurance, as insurance is not available in Costa Rica. He also stated that he is not responsible for controlling the crime throughout Costa Rica.

The bottom line is that this hotel is not safe and I would not recommend staying here. Although the owner insists that there are security cameras and guards throughout the property, such measures are clearly inadequate. There was no footage caught of the robbers. None of the guards caught them or even noticed that our door was wide open with the lights on. The doors are able to be opened and broken into when they are locked.

All in all it was a disappointing experience. Not only were we put in danger, but also the hotel owner took no responsibility for the hotel's failure to protect its guests from crime. He even blamed us for daring to bring things like cameras and laptops with us to his hotel when we apparently should have known that we were risking having them stolen.

Consuhotel, Director Comercial at Makanda by the Sea, responded to this review, January 17, 2014
We are very serious concerning the safety of our guests stay at Makanda by the Sea and this is the first report of such incident since our opening. Unfortunately Police didn’t find other fingerprints different from guest and upon their review of the security cameras, the only people approaching the room were the guests leaving and entering; also, as the guests reported the incident with the receptionist, we noticed passports and other values were intact in the safety boxes.

We coordinated the immediate visit of the Police; they were given our condolences and we found them a room in another hotel, in case they were uncomfortable to move to a new villa. They decided to continue their stay in their new villa. The guests requested reimbursement for their loss of electronics and not to pay for their entire stay. We gave them a full refund for their 5 night stay. We also contacted the agency and were told that they would refund the guests their money and the hotel would refund the agency plus a penalty for the reimbursement, so, we are glad and can say that we support each guest in every possible way.

We employ a full time staff of guards and double at night. Our head guard works coordinating security throughout the grounds. We have installed CCTV cameras at strategic points, enhancing the guards’ ability to respond. All guards have radios and are constantly in contact with the central guard station. All of our rooms have safe deposit boxes (for documents, monetary vehicles, jewelry etc.) which at the same time are located in secure rooms/closets for larger items (whose dimensions exceed the safe deposit boxes dimensions) Signs are posted in the rooms informing the guests to use our secure facilities for their personal items, and the receptionists’ security briefing, in the room, shows the guests the key for the safe.

Our property is a wildlife reserve offering most of the flora and fauna found in our area and is enhanced by low density buildings surrounded by natural vegetation. We have 6 Villas and 5 Studios plus pool and restaurant on over 3 hectares and a larger 4 bedroom villa with a private pool on another 7600 square meters. We boarder the maritime zone which was dedicated as a heritage zone and wildlife corridor connecting Punta Quepos and the coastal zone.

Having not experienced a forced entry before; we have made changes to our security procedures. Although we have motion detection cameras, various other motion detectors where newly installed in the area, alerting the house guard of anyone approaching and therefore initiating a radio alert to a guard assigned to that area of the property; whether the guests are away from their room or for any other infringement of the area. More cameras are been installed, metal door frame reinforcement is being installed and additional security locks are installed. Additional guards are in use. We will continue to evaluate the security to meet the needs for the future.

Simply put, I love everything about Makanda. The villas are private and spread out -- you can do nothing and enjoy or get in the groove of Manuel Antonio. I like staying active but coming back to Makanda is like home away from home.

First trip here was prefect except for the wi-fi, trouble keeping connected and unfortunately I need to work a minimum of 1 hour a day. They've fixed the wi-fi issue and it is now 100% (thank you Makanda!).I was even doing FaceTime with friends and family back home wishing them all a Merry Christmas.

My "office" here is the hammock on the deck where I am writing from now as I watch the sunset! I could get used to this.

Monkeys galore on the property to amuse you, also adults only for us is a huge plus since we get annoyed by misbehaving children.

The private beach is also great. There a lot of steps and it's not for those that don't want to hike , especially the steps to the beach, very steep. I think it's all a plus because it keeps me in shape while on holiday!

Leo in the office is superb and can arrange tours and give great advice.

I have no complaints other than wanting to stay a month!

My Fiance and I stayed at the hotel after booking by the phone the night before.
The guy at the front desk, was very nice and accommodating. he offered help with our luggage and was very clear with the amenities available at the hotel.
The room we stayed at was the Villa 1, it had a beautiful view of the rainforest and the ocean.
Unfortunately we were unable to enjoy the breakfast because we checked in at 09:30 am and left at 05:45 am the next day.

My wife and I stayed at Makanda By the Sea for 3 days. We were in awe with the property, the minute we checked in. The place was nestled between the lush greenery of Manuel Antonio. The desk clerk was really nice and gave us insights into things we could do. We were able to pick tours that were to our liking and budget.
The room had its own entrance, glass windows, and an amazing view. The way each rooms have been set up, one gets complete privacy. The room also came with a basic kitchenette. We were able to enjoy the wildlife in and around the property as well (sloths, birds, butterflies, crabs, etc).
