If you're looking for a simple, affordable accommodation with the best location- be sure to stay here! Where most hotels in Manuel Antonio are perched on the cliffs and offer great views of the ocean, you can be basking on the Costa Rican shore literally just steps outside the hotel- and I'm not even exaggerating about the distance.

The rooms are simple and contain a small kitchenette area with a few dishes to use if desired. The room I had as a single room was just enough for 2 nights, but it's not extremely roomy. Still, it's plenty, since there is plenty to do in Manuel Antonio and you probably won't be in the room much anyway. The only downside I found to the room I had (a single room on the first level) was that it was right next to the kids pool. It was very easy to hear kids talking loud and being noisy right there, but it wasn't unbearable or anything to deteriorate the entire ambiance of the hotel.

Playa Espadilla, the beach where this hotel is located offers lots of activities on the beach including surfing, banana boating, parasailing, etc. There is a strip of a few good restaurants mingled with Costa Rican souvenir shops. I especially liked Marlin Restaurante- it offers a mix of American, Italian and Costa Rican cuisine at moderate prices.

Be SURE to head out to the beach around sunset! I have one of the most memorable pictures from my entire journey to Costa Rica from Playa Espadilla at sunset, the beach right outside this hotel.

Breakfast is not included in the room rate but they have a small little kitchen area right by the front desk where they offer a limited breakfast menu for $7. If you're tired of the typical Costa Rican breakfast (gallo pinto, eggs, toast, fruit, and juice) I noticed Marlin Restaurante, just about 7 minutes walking from the hotel offered breakfast as well. I also encountered wild monkeys on the open roofs of the hotel while I was eating breakfast- that was definitely a surprise!

The front desk staff spoke great English and were smiling and helpful every time I walked by. They have brochures and info on tours in the area; it's impossible to be bored while in Manuel Antonio. If you're going to be in Manuel Antonio on a Monday, note that the park is closed, so you'll want to plan an alternate activity instead of visiting the park.

Hotel Verde Mar is a youthful, energetic hotel right on the beach- next time I'm in Manuel Antonio, I'm going to be sure to stay here again, and I hope you consider staying here too!

My wife and I stayed here in early December. The room on the second floor was clean and quiet. No security or ventilation problems. The front desk staff was very helpful with tour arranging and other issues. The hotel now has a restaurant with an excellent chef. We ate many meals there. The hotel is very close to the beach. It is an easy walk to the shops nearer the national park entrance, and the entrance itself.

Room Tip: Get your meals early in the dining hours, as the chef works alone, or with one assistant.

We stayed here 4 nights as it met our teens' criteria: on the beach, pool, and walking distance to shopping and Manuel Antonio park. It also met our criteria, cheaply priced, clean and easy access to sunsets and cold drinks, without driving! It is an older hotel, but if you want to be really close to the beach and the park (parking at the park is a huge issue, take the bus, taxi or walk) you must stay in an older hotel. Our room had two comfy queens, and was a litle jammed AC and a small fridge. They have a small eating area where they make an excellent breakfast. The eating area is next to the road though, so it is noisy. The rooms are off the road and quiet. This place is a bit worn but its location makes up for it. Each beach day we rented two umbrellas and 4 lounges for 20$ and accessed the run down beach bar for cold drinks. We could sit and watch those glorious sunsets on the beach with a cold one. This place is not the ritz but it is clean and very well located. 5-7 minute walk from the park entrance, walk by beach or road. Its a mix or locals and tourists on this stretch of beach, there is access to drive down and park among the palm trees along this stretch of beach. You can also learn to surf on this beach, lifeguards in place, but beware no one is to swim far out. The better hotels are high up and not near the beach or park but they do have the view from up there.

We took a chance and stayed two night this week 11/21 and was charged $70 plus tax. This hotel room had a view of the ocean - beware- all rooms face the pool and you need to look to your left to see the ocean. Only rooms at the end have a view of the beach. Ramone the guy working the desk was super friendly. They promise free WiFi - FYI you can only get a signal not from your room but the open air lobby - which is cool b/c there are tables and chairs. The room had a king size bed, AC, an medium sized bathroom and kitchenette. We had a frig and coffee pot - both worked and we used them!. There was an in room safe box if you bring your own luck. They were making repairs as this was the off season and so construction was going on - about 7am. No problem we were up by 6. Our room did have bugs - ants and spiders - to be expected - we were armed with big spray. We asked for extra pillows as the ones we had were pancake flat and the mattress was rock hard. We got pillows but the case were dirty - literally dirt stains - we used them anyway. With private beach access and in walking distance to the park -we didn't complain. We did have them arrange for the chef to cook breakfast at 630am - but he didn't show until 7 which was when we were leaving so, no experience with the food. Just know you stay here for the location. No wildlife visits- if you seek this out stay on the opposite side of the street - you choose beach or jungle. Beach access leads you to a great guy who rents hotel guests 2 chairs, umbrella and a surf board or boogie board for the entire day for $10. The local beach cafe makes a mean margarita and great ceviche, ate there 2x. Happy hour 2 for 1 4-6. Good deal.

we had visited Manuel Antonio in 1991 and fell in love with the area. It is a totally natural setting and with the National Park at the end of the beautiful beach, we knew we had found a true Central American paradise. Back then there we stayed closer to Quepos, but took the local bus into the park every day, and we knew then that we would be back! So 20 years later, we did just that -and this time we found a real pearl -the HOTEL VERDE MAR. The place is very well situated, with a walkway (and security gate) to the beautiful public beach, where for a few $$ we could rent a beach umbrella and 2 lounge chairs for as long as we needed each day. The hotel itself could use some freshening, but at the low prices they charge for the rooms, you can't complain! There is even a lovely pool, that is kept very clean, and is for the hotel guests' use only (thanks to the security gate!) The staff are all very accommodating and knowledgable, and are happy to help, providing they are not already busy with a check-in or another guests' needs -you can't expect 5-star service here, you're not paying for that! The rooms are cleaned every day and fresh towels, etc are provided daily. We were very happy to have the little kitchenette, as we don't eat big breakfasts, and we were able to purchase the local DELICIOUS coffee from Café Milagro from the nearby mini market, as well as milk, bread and butter, condiments and some fresh fruit -all that we needed for preparing our breakfast was available in our room, and the staff cleaned everything up when they did the room. We were careful however, to boil water and pour it over the cups, plates and utensils ourselves. Also, we purchased bottled water to prepare our coffee. Anyone who's suffered through Montezuma's Revenge will understand why it's never too much and effort to be careful of the water! The only complaint had to do with something entirely outside the hotel's control -a group of howler monkeys would arrive at late afternoon on the occasional day, and set up a horrible racket on the roof of the hotel. One of them even used a lose piece of the metal roofing as a percussion instrument, banging and howling and screeching enough to wake the dead -but the staff would always chase it away, after awhile.... otherwise, it was peaceful, clean and very well-run -definitely a place to return to, and to recommend!

Room Tip: ask for an upstairs room away from the entrance.

This self-proclaimed "funky" hotel was so much more for us that we extended our stay from 2 to 4 nights. The staff were very friendly & helpful. The location was fantastic! - just a few steps from the beach, a short walk to markets & Manuel Antonio park & quite close to great restaurants. We stayed in the "loft" & loved it! The pool was inviting & the chef on site prepared yummy drinks & meals.

Room Tip: Ask for the loft if you don't mind going up a narrow spiral staircase!
