Views are good. Staff tries very hard and extremely pleasant. Rooms are adequate. If you do not need wifi this is decent place. But any connection is lost within 2 minutes . Breakfast was fine. Place called Emilio's only 100 meters from hotel is a favorite for ex-pats and thought it was by far the best restaurant in town.

The views are spectacular. The staff is pleasant and most speak English. Our room is enormous with a wrap around balcony giving us a tremendous view. The place is meticulously clean, the food is good, the open patio and infinity pools well cared for. So, what could be wrong? Well, there's no mini-bar, no fridge, no desk in the room, the chairs on the balcony and the room are straight, hard backed wood, the water pressure is weak and fluctuates terribly resulting in jumping out of the way multiple times to avoid scalding and the wifi is horrible.

Now, I know what you're thinking. This is Costa Rica, what do you expect? And what do you need wifi and a desk for anyway? Well, we came here after three days at The Peace Lodge, about three hours away, in a much more remote region and it had none of these problems. The wifi was steady, the water pressure intense, the chairs comfortable.

What do you need a desk for? Writing this review, updating friends on Facebook, etc. Wifi? It is kind of nice to check the news or upload a video of feeding a sloth before you get home. I've tried it in our room, on the patio and in the bar area, it's all the same. I got it to be a little more stable by giving myself a static IP and setting my secondary DNS to Googles (8.8.8.8)

So, it is very nice, but it would go a long way to have a desk, comfortable chairs, a fridge in the room and a better network.

Room Tip: Try hard to get room 40 for the best possible view.

The view is unbeatable…and so is the pool and pool bars…we had a great stay at La Mariposa as part of our honeymoon trip to Costa Rica.
Breakfast was wonderful and rich. The view from the restaurant is magnificent. The reception team was extremely helpful. Shuttle to the beach is efficient (4 times a day). Its about a 10 minute drive to the beach. You can spot monkeys, birds and other surprises from the hotel grounds.
Note that there is no elevator but there are rooms with handicap accessibility. Wi-fi in the room was elusive. A few small things we would hope will be improved…the booking cannot be completed online, it must be done by phone and fax which we found to be cumbersome and inconvenient especially as we finalized it while we were already traveling.
The room does not have a mini fridge where you could store some cold drinks etc. There is an ice machine.

Pros: Gorgeous views of ocean from up high.
Pool area is lovely, lush well tended gardens all around, amazing sunsets. Fabulous!
Helpful and friendly front desk staff.
Clean/Secure/
Great free breakfast buffet.
Convenient - right on bus line, short drive to town or to Manuel Antonio Park
some good restaurants within easy walking
kitchen kindly made us a box lunch to take with us on our early morning departure.

Cons: Room decor is dull, not at all colorful or pretty.
Beds are not excellent, just decent
Bathroom layout is awkward and screened window conflicts with air-conditioning.
It was very hot in February so Air-conditioning was important, but screened window???
Few and thin towels provided.
Balconies are not private... just bamboo screens between.
No elevator - must climb outside circular open staircase to upper floors.
Internet in room was spotty.
beaches are not within easy walking distance
Restaurant and bar fairly expensive.
Bar service not very friendly or attentive - drastically different from others
Restaurant service was slow, although friendly

A fun thing was one morning a little gang of monkeys appeared and played on the circular open stairs. We also saw a large iguana near under the stairs and numerous birds.

Room Tip: 4th floor of main building was OK as long as you don't mind the stairs (see picture) All rooms...

My wife and I spent 3 nights at La Mariposa in a ocean view room while doing an REI ecotour in CR.
The ocean views were spectacular and the room was clean and very comfortable.
The grounds are well maintained and secure . Bird watchers will enjoy birding from their private balconies.

The staff was very attentive and helpful.

Room Tip: Go ocean view or partial ocean view. Be sure to visit the gift shop next door . If you are disabl...

When we arrived at Hotel La Mariposa, one member of our group was very ill and the staff at Hotel La Mariposa was WONDERFUL. They quickly cleaned a room and allowed us to check in more than 6 hours early so she could recuperate. Although it was impossible to foresee this situation, we were glad the staff of La Mariposa were so accommodating when it did.

The views are amazing -- perhaps the most picturesque we've ever seen. Our room is very large (plenty of space for a family of 4) and the beds are comfortable. Our balcony wraps around 180 degrees of the room with a tremendous view of the Pacific and the wildlife on the property.

The ride to the beach is about 2 1/2 miles, but goes quickly in the hotel van which runs on a predictable schedule.

The bathroom is disappointing given the quality of the hotel. And the towels are small, worn and coarse. Again, not in keeping with what one would expect from such a beautiful hotel.

But the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, particularly Byron at the front desk, make it easy to over look those details.

You can't beat the spectacular view from this hotel. But that is its main asset. If you are looking for a luxurious hotel, this isn't it. Rooms are spacious and clean, but spartan. There are no amenities and the bathroom is second-rate at best. Service is friendly but a bit flaky. I was impressed that the front desk reached out by email immediately after we made our reservations to help reserve tours in advance. But when I tried to actually nail down tour reservations, no one ever responded to my repeated requests. I called to follow up and they told me they would e-mail me and of course, no one ever did. Most important for families with small children to know--this is a very child-friendly hotel and our children loved it BUT child safety is not a top priority. A child can easily fall off the edge of the hotel dining area--in order to protect the view, there are no fences surrounding the dining area, just a hedge that is about a foot high and a foot deep--beyond it is a straight 20ft drop to the floor below. The glass wall/door that led to the balcony in our hotel room was very thin and I suspect is not made of shatterproof glass. If you have very active young children, be prepared--you cannot let your guard down. Infinity pool is lovely. All said, while we had a wonderful time here, if we were to return to this area, we would probably stay at a different hotel.

Room Tip: There is no point in staying here if you don't get the ocean view.
