“Stay for the view!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Overall a great stay. The view makes up for the hotels other deficits--our bathroom was terrible, towels and toiletries subpar, rooms very basic, no real spa. However, we had great service (loved Allen at the pool bar). The bellman was impressive carrying 2 large suitcases (one on each shoulder) and two carry-ons up the spiral stair case IN ONE TRIP! We didn't see any animals here other than a tiny gecko on our balcony and an iguana hanging out at the bar (so cute). We were able to visit several other hotels during our stay and none even compared to La Mariposas view. We had a second floor corner room in the main building. In sum, stay here for the best view in Manuel Antonio with great service. If you're into luxury rooms-this isn't your hotel.

Room Tip: Main building upper floor rooms have the best view. We were in room 35 with a perfect full ocean and...

So awesome we are returning once again. We loved the experience of all the friendly workers and the spectacular view. The bartender by the pool was always friendly and welcoming. Great location and short walk to many restaurants. Not on the beach but amazing view of Manuel Antonio. Pura Vidal La Mariposa will be back in less than 2 weeks!

La Mariposa has an amazing location and some of the most beautiful views in an area with lots of beautiful views. The restaurant/bar is absolutely worth a trip, regardless of whether you're staying here. The pool is very beautiful, as well. Rooms are clean, sleek, and modern with great views. Service is uneven; management can have a bit of an attitude what with their 1001 Places to See Before You Die listing. There are comparable experiences at better prices, and comparable prices with better experiences. If you stay here, you will not regret it, though.

My friends and I had an amazing experience at La Mariposa. As every other review has said (but is still worth repeating) the view is beyond incredible, the best in the area. The property has a large amount of wildlife and we saw our fair share of monkeys, sloths, birds, and lizards right at the hotel. The infinity pool is very nice and has a great view of the pacific and the rainforest. The hotel restaurant has a great selection of very fresh Costa Rican cuisine, which we were impressed with. Every staff member was very helpful with answering any questions as well as being very welcoming. The bartender, Fredrick, is really awesome, great conversationalist and can mix a mean drink. The rooms were nicely appointed but I think the original main building may need some updating. Overall, the hotel is great and I couldn't recommend it higher, for the price it's a great value.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with a group and need two rooms get rooms 28 and 29. These rooms comprise t...

The people at Hotel La Mariposa were very accommodating to our needs. We stayed there as guests in a great corner room with a view. I wouldn't recommend a top level room for someone scared of heights or who has difficulty with stairs.

I hung out at the restaurant for breakfast and to use wifi after breakfast. It was a comfortable and beautiful place from which to work.

The food at both restaurants is great too.

Room Tip: Higher floors require a climb up grated sprial stairs - not reccommended for someone scared of heigh...

Great views ...but lacking in many other services. We chose this hotel from the beautiful pictures and because it is listed in the 1000 Places to see before you Die book. We did enjoy the hotel, however, you need to know that the view is really the main/only thing you are buying. The hotel is walking distance to many places because of its central location. We took the very cheap (.50 US) public bus from the stop by the hotel when the shuttle was not worth waiting for to get us to the beach. However, the hotel has very little to do or enjoy if the weather is not perfect. Be forewarned, that main building has only outside, wrought-iron open stairs to all 4 stories. If it is raining, you are going to get wet. If you don't like heights - choose another hotel. Also, every member of our family of 5 slipped on the entry paver tiles in the rain regardless of footwear. The jacuzzi and pools are solar heated. Great for the environment but it rained and was overcast every day. They were never warm. The breakfast buffet was good but very pedestrian compared to others we had in Costa Rica. The internet service is not good. Even sitting under the router in the lobby we could only connected a few times and the speed was molasses. Sebastian at the front desk was helpful many times and the swim-up pool bar was staffed by a great guy who taught us to make grasshoppers out of banana leaves one day when we were trapped with a sick child and tons of rain. They do have a pool table and the gift shop/art gallery has better prices than shops in town with better quality. I would stay here again but only because I would know what I was getting the second time around.

This is a great Hotel. The view of Manual Antonio Beach is the best. The staff is great and all speak English. The pool bar has the second best view while the infinity pool is nothing short of spectacular. The monkeys also visit the property on a regular basis for the full Costa Rican experience. As far as location, you can walk to many great restaurants, banks and grocery stores, if needed. You can walk to the beach, all downhill about a mile then take their free bus service back to the hotel. They also provide a free breakfast, which is perfect before your daily activity begins. We ate at the hotel restaurant the first night and the food and service was first class. We'll be back
