“Tropical Paradise with a Great View”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

My daughter and I had 9 wonderful nights at Costa Verde over New Years. We switched rooms because of availability; both were great. Our view of the ocean and adult pool was perfect from Costa Verde II. The room was very spacious, comfortable and clean. Our studio room in Building B was also quite roomy with a nice ocean view. Breakfast at Anaconda Restaurant was always convenient with extensive hours, tasty, and affordable. Gabriel was one of our very friendly waiters who took the time to know our names and ask about our days. The adult pool had a wonderful view; we watched the sunset there most evenings. We were served great blended drinks with enthusiasm by Rigo. He is a great asset to Costa Verde. We were assisted with booking white water rafting, parasailing and other excursions by helpful staff at the reception area. We saw all 3 types of monkeys as well as parrots on the grounds. The gardens were very beautiful and well-maintained. Fortunately the garden and grounds care was eco-conscious with no leaf blowers to ruin the peace, and no pesticides to poison us or the wildlife. Drink cups at the pool and in the rooms were reusable to avoid waste. The only recommendation I would have is to replace take-out food containers with compostable materials.

Room Tip: Enjoyed the view of the ocean from the adult section.

My wife and I stayed here in January 2014 and chose to splurge and upgrade to full ocean view room in the adults only building. The views from our room were spectacular even though we were on the ground floor. We had a large patio with beautiful wooden rocking chairs. There are tons of animals around the property, we saw monkeys and there was a sloth that hung around a tree right by our building. Our room was quite large, but it seemed like it could use a bit of updating. Our biggest complaint would be the cleanliness of the room, when we arrived there were some dead bugs on the floor and you could tell that the tile floors really hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in a while.

The hotel is about a 10-15 min walk down to the beach, the walk down isn't bad but the walk back up the hill was a bit tiring. The Manuel Antonio-Quepos bus stops right outside the hotel, so if you are looking for a cheap option to get around that would be it. It cost us 285 colones ($0.60 each) and was actually easier than having to barter with taxi drivers.

Costa Verde was the very first hotel I checked out for our vacation, our first trip to Costa Rica. After a lot of stress and research of other areas and hotels, that's where we wound up. Though we have a 9 year old, we were accidentally placed in CV 2, the adult section. All I can say is that I had tears in my eyes when we walked into the room. The view was literally breathtaking. And by that, I mean I actually gasped. The room was very large, nothing fancy. They make a lot of their own furniture in a shop up the street and have handmade rocking chairs on the balcony. Yes, the cookware was cheap, the stove knobs had no markings, there were no fancy soaps or shampoos, no room service or spa treatments, and the beds squeaked a bit but I would have slept on a cot in a lean-to with that view. I didn't want to leave my balcony.
My kids loved the place. We saw monkeys every day and there were a few sloth in the trees by the kids pool. There were walking trails on the property and the staff was very friendly.
The only thing I would change is that I would NOT have rented a car. Huge waste of money since we were not doing any traveling around (kids wanted to stay put). Could have taken the bus to the beach for 50 cents. It would be different if you are planning on traveling more around the country.
We were there in July, the rainy season. It did rain every day but still was so warm we'd be out in the pool in the rain (until the lightning started). The rain usually started at 3pm, so we had the daytime to do what we wanted. There was only one day when it actually poured the entire day.
We loved the pizzeria up the street and the food at the Anaconda and the airplane restaurant was good as well. Definitely hire a guide if you go in to Manuel Antonio and don't miss a mangrove kayak tour and ziplining. We went with Chino's tours of the mangrove. It's a very small operation but with very knowledgeable guides.
Both of my kids want to go back, and they want to stay at Costa Verde. It's not the place for you if you want 5 star resort amenities, but the location and THE VIEW can't be beat. We will always have fond memories of this place.

Room Tip: We were in Costa Verde 2 room 8. Be sure you get a 2nd or third floor room for the best view. I beli...

My wife and I, and my two adult children stayed at this property Dec 26-Dec 31, 2013. We enjoyed it immensely. We stayed in Costa Verde II, an area which is does not allow children under the age of 17.

We had a deluxe room with two queen beds. It was spacious, had a full kitchen, a nice bathroom a decent dining/game table and a beautiful balcony. The air conditioning was excellent (and necessary). Shower water was hot and the pressure was excellent.

The staff was friendly, and even in the high season, the rooms were reasonably priced. The water was safe to drink from the taps in the hotel room. None of us got sick from water. Two of got a ill from some shrimp at a local restaurant (La Cantina) -- I suggest avoiding the shrimp. Fortunately it was just a day thing.

I thought the cooking equipment was a bit on the flimsy side, although it was clean and in ok condition. Turns out the cooking post/etc are the same that are used by the majority of 'Ticas. You can see the exact same brand and style hang in in the Mercado Central in San Jose where ordinary Ticas shop. They got the job done. I made several full dinners using a little ingenuity and a bit of patience. The stove is a two-burner electric which worked fine.

There is a grocery store in Quepos not too far away where you can pick up necessities, although we ate out at least once a day at the many decent restaurants in the area.

The pool was very nice, the views were stunning. There is a small "Jungle" trail you can take on property. It was beautiful, although challenging in a few places. We saw humming birds, lots of lizards and iguanas, some cool, howler and white-faced monkeys, ant nests and several stunning birds all at our hotel (of course Manuel Antonio is even more impressive).

I read a post by a traveler who had some luggage stolen. That was not at all our experience. First, there is a room safe in the room to store your valuables, and the rooms and balcony fully lock.

Second, anyone traveling in Costa Rica is advised to never, EVER, leave anything in your car unattended. They tell you this everywhere you go there. As a result, our rental car was always far cleaner than my cars at home (it was literally empty when we weren't in it).

The hotel is a short 10 minute cab ride to the entrance to Manuel Antonio, as well as to the beach/shopping area. We typically paid about $4 for a cab ride.

You definitely need a reservation during high season.

Some other suggestions:

Always take plenty of water with you wherever you go. It is ridiculously easy to get dehydrated.

Sunscreen up unless you like skin cancer.

Pack day bags (towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, water, energy bars) when going to Manuel Antonio. You will need them. We had small backpacks.

Catch a cab to the park or each -- it beats worrying about parking or having things stolen.

Get to Manuel Antonio early (before 8:30 am during the busy seasons) or you will be waiting in the hot sun in a long line.

Take an inexpensive king or queen size sheet to the beach -- it makes for a great place to stick your stuff.

Follow the rule: One in the water, one watching the bags while at the beach, especially at Manuel Antonio. The Monkeys and raccoons are called "la mafia" by the locals, because they will steal your entire bag to try and find food. The Monkyes will actually unzip your bags, and if they can't find food, they get angry and scatter all the contents.

Have a great trip.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Costa Verde II complex for adults and children 17 and over.

Negative experience overall for a single night. Our family of 4 from Canada picked this hotel last minute as we did not have a reservation in the area and we were on our way to San Isidro. When getting ready to leave next morning and loading our luggage in the car just a couple of meters from our room we got distracted by taking some photos of the views from the events building and one piece of our luggage was stolen within seconds. The hotel is quite accessible from the road for external criminals to get in, security is very limited within the property or absent, we want to think that this behaviour comes from the outside rather than from inside but you never know. Avoid this place if you have other options.

The four of us shared a suite. The room was fairly large, and we had a partial view of the ocean from the balcony, which was nice. The next room over probably had a much better view. The A/C and fans are also nice to have in the sweltering weather. The pots provided in the mini-kitchen were rather warped, so don't expect to do much cooking. The service was a little impersonal and distant, so overall I think that the experience was average and the room was overpriced for what we got.
