“Good, Solid Hotel Lots of Wildlife”
Reviewed September 30, 2007

My friend and I stayed at Hotel Costa Verde for 3 nights in mid-September. This is the 1st time I've ever provided comment on any hotels online, but since I choose hotels based on the Tripadvisor reviews, I thought I should do my part. Overall, we had a good experience. We stayed in building D with a partial ocean view in a Efficiency room. Building D was away from the main street, but to get to Reception area, you have to walk a few flights of steep stairs. Fairly clean, and unit was quiet. However, there was a group of people who was on the floor above us who was talking until midnight on the 1st night. Thin walls. The A/C was good, but very loud. The hotel was only a 10-15 minute walk down to the MA beach. As it's a bit steep, we would take the local bus back up the hill. Their restaurant food was okay. Nothing great, but okay, but then again, I didn't think Costa Rican food was spectacular overall. Front desk overall pretty good, as we booked all our tours through the hotel. One thing that wasn't a big deal, but more the principle of the matter, is we wanted a 2pm checkout on the last day, which they wouldn't give us; the hotel was more than 1/2 empty during our stay given low season.

Now, here's the reason why we did enjoy our stay, one afternoon we saw a group of 25+ squirrel monkeys playing right outside our hotel room for over an hour. What a rush! Additionally, we saw sloths, and other monkey species too. It was incredible to be eating a meal and seeing the animals.

Overall, I would go back again, with the only caveat to bring earplugs.

We stayed here for 5 nights in Costa Verde II at the end of August in the Penthouse. It was a great room with plenty of ocean and jungle views. Maids were great everyday. All the hotel staff were great including the restaurants.
We woke up the first morning to monkeys walking on the balcony. Wildlife was abundant and varied day to day.
The white water rafting trip they booked was thru Amigos Del Rio and was one of the highlights of the trip. The guides were great!!!!
We are very happy we booked at Costa Verde II.

The ants are there for you to enjoy so don't be surprised if you see a few.

My husband and I stayed with our two teenage daughters in the penthouse suite in the adult only building. The rooms decor is basic. Our room was huge! Typical looking Costa Rican furniture. The room was very clean and the maid service was exceptional. We enjoyed our kitchenette, especially in the morning when I would make eggs and bacon for the family. The real appeal was the floor to ceiling screened windows. even in the shower. We saw monkeys, iguanas and beautiful birds from our room. This hotel is not high end, however if you're looking for a great location with character this may fit the bill.
I would also like to say that the front desk staff was helpful and whenever we needed anything they responded without hesitation.
The only irritant was the constant army of tiny ants. We learned to keep all food items inside the refrigerator.

Highly recommended. This is the closest hotel to Manuel Antonio Natl Park with the bus stop right outside the hotel (which comes every 15 minutes - I think). All the rooms, even our cheap one, came with balconies with famous Costa Rica rocking chairs. They had 3 onsite restaurants, one (believe the name was Anaconda) had great views of MA park. The rooms felt like cabins and has safe deposit box, with fridge and kitchenette. It had A/C and ceiling fan too. There were a total of 3 pools, one that allowed you to view monkeys while you swam. And speaking of monkeys, there were TONS of monkeys around, especially howler monkeys. They weren't kidding with their slogan "Still more monkeys than people". The whole place was just beautifully set. Only minor problem was some ants in the room, but they concentrated their efforts on the kitchen so didn't pose much of a problem.

The view is the best thing going for this hotel. It is absolutely breath taking. We stayed in the ocean view unit with AC in section B (B-8) with a panoramic view of the jungle covered hillside, Manuel Antonio, and the sea. The room was clean although furnished very simply. The huge terrace with table and rocking chairs made up for the rather sparten room.

The other big plus for Costa Verde is the abundance of wildlife. We saw as many animals on the hotel grounds as we did in MA Park. We saw monkeys every day - at the pool (laying on lounge chairs), at the bar at Anaconda Restaurant, in the trees, walkways, and even on our own balcony.

Now for the bad -
Rooms - They could do with some updating and general maintenance. There was not much in the way of local color or charm.

Maid Service - was unreliable. One day she came at 3 p.m. the next at 8 a.m. When I asked her (politely and in Spanish) if she could come back in 20 minutes she seemed very put out and never returned at all that day even though she was cleaning the room next door when we left.

Location - Although the view is wonderful we found ourselved catching the bus several times a day to go down the hill to the entrance to MA for the beach, restaurants, shopping, etc. I think next time I will stay in that area. The views are actually wonderful most everywhere. The bus comes by frequently and only costs 105 colones (approx 20 cents) but it would have been nicer to be able to walk to the beach, restaurants, etc.

Food - Although the food at the hotel was acceptable it was not really great. We had fabulous food, genuinely friendly service and better prices at the little local, open air restaurants near the entrance to MA.

I was not disappointed with Costa Verde. I chose it for the panoramic views, monkeys, and the reasonable price and it met those expectations but when I return I will probably choose another hotel.

We chose Costa Verde based on their website, tripadvisor reviews, and price. We went to Costa Rica for 5 days to figure out some details for our wedding next May. During our trip we had the chance to look at many of the hotels in Manuel Antonio. Between our experience staying at Costa Verde and viewing the other hotels, we are planning on booking another room for our wedding as well as recommending that all of our guests stay at CV also!

Pros: AMAZING views (go for the ocea view rooms, so worth it), friendly staff, unbeatable prices, kitchenettes in room, clean, restaurants are great, will organize tours for you.

Cons: breakfast not included (go to market and get food, its cheaper than the wonderful breakfasts at the restaurants), no shuttle to beach.

Recommendation: if you are traveling without kids, stay at Costa Verde 2. The views are even more stunning and you don't need the air conditioning, so don't worry about that!

We had two rooms. They were supposed to be together, but they were a hillside apart. Since there were no phones, there was no easy way to call each other for arrangements, etc. The view from one of the rooms was fabulous, but this wasn't enough to overcome the bug problem.

I got bitten by a brown recluse. There was a scorpion in my room also which was bigger than any bug I've ever seen. The doors and windows don't close properly, so bugs get in. We didn't have a bug problem at any other hotels in Costa Rica.

The brown recluse bite? - 3 months of wound care. Bummer! Still, I'd go back to Manuel Antonio. Next time, I'll stay at Si Como No.
