La Mansion Inn

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 24, 2014

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and so we researched our hotel options extensively and chose La Mansion Inn! It was everything we expected and more.
First, before I forget, for those concerned about currency exchanges, the airport has an ATM (baggage claim area) that charges a nominal fee. I believe we only forfeited about 1% of the withdrawal worth.
The hotel coordinated a shuttle to pick us up right outside the airport. The driver had a sign with our names on it, so that alone eliminated a lot of confusion and worry. *We were charged $170 USD for the both of us.* At first it seemed a little pricey. However, it eliminated any hassle/stress that we'd have gone through to rent a car, and as the drive from the airport to the hotel was 2.5 hours, the price seemed reasonable.
When we arrived at La Mansion, we were welcomed in the most friendly of manners and shown to the beautiful Penthouse #2. The room was spotlessly clean, and tastefully decorated. We really enjoyed the two patios, which offered different shades of sunlight at different points in the day. Both patios have an excellent view of the oceans and countryside, and the front patio has a wonderful view of the hotel's gorgeous flower garden. As far as wildlife, it's a prime spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and view the beautiful birds, as well as the cute little family of geckos that hunt bugs on the ceiling after dark.
If you are apprehensive about an English/Spanish language barrier, don't be. Although English is not their first language, most of the staff that we met were very well learned in the language, and were so helpful and patient. If you still find that you are having language miscommunications, Robert, who is from New York, is so friendly and very knowledgeable. We felt like family when he greeted us for the first time.
Dine luxuriously yet affordably at the hotel's restaurant, the Jacques Cousteau! Every meal is accompanied with relaxing music and a beautiful, open-aired view of the ocean.
Breakfast: I'll advise anyone to double-check with the hotel when booking, but our daily breakfast was complimentary. The only thing that we were responsible for was the sales tax and the 10% service fee. The servers are very friendly, and work very hard, so we personally decided to tip them more accordingly.
Dinner: The dinner menu was to die for! Each meal is started with piping hot bread with butter - so good! There is "special" every evening, including a glass of wine, an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. As we are light eaters and try to dine on a budget, we split the special between the two of us and were happily content. We dined here about 3-4 times over the span of our trip, and everything that we ate was exceptional! Our compliments to the chef!
As this hotel does not sit directly on the sand, be prepared for about a 15 minute brisk walk to the nearest beach. If you wish to take a less physically demanding route to the beach, the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle (scheduled at various times during the day) that will take you directly there.
Don't feel like traveling to the beach? Enjoy the hotel's beautiful pool. The water was always very clear, and it was so warm! The pool has a swim-up bar that we took advantage of daily. If you like banana splits, we suggest you order the Dirty Monkey (adults only)!
Activities: La Mansion has a binder of different activities (kayaking, canyoning, etc) that you can experience on your trip. The prices are affordable, and the front desk will coordinate these for you. Of the two activities that we enjoyed (^), both companies picked us up/dropped us off at the hotel, and both provided lunch or dinner after the activity. Again, a wonderful way to stretch your money if you're traveling on a budget.
One last thing! This hotel is situated in what I'd call a beautiful countryside. Be advised that it is not within practical walking distance of the nearest town (pharmacies, grocery stores), Quepos. It is about a 5 minute drive by taxi ($16 + tip round-trip). If you are looking for a picturesque little town, you are sadly mistaken. We went into the town once, out of necessity, and decided that we much more enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the hotel! On the up side, we found a wonderful little shop that sold a wide variety of fruits/veggies. We brought 3 delicious mangoes and 6 bananas back to the hotel for a super-affordable $2 USD.
In conclusion, we have suggested this hotel to all of our friends and family, and would without a doubt choose to stay here should we ever decide to visit beautiful Costa Rica again!

Room Tip: There are a couple of things that I will notify readers about regarding Penthouse #2 (Room 19). Thes...

My husband and I stayed here for 9 nights mid-March and loved everything about this inn. The staff including front desk personnel Stevan,Paola and Elizabeth were all so helpful, personable making our stay stress-free and fun! Breakfast every morning on the patio was excellent again with gracious staff, and great food. We stayed in Room 10 with incredible views of the Pacific and beaches, most comfortable beds ever in a hotel and very quiet- shows the thought that went into building this inn. Again, we would come back here in a flash and hope to do so.
More of a hotel for adults as small pool, swim-up bar and peaceful.

Our group of eight stayed here for four nights in Feb. The hotel, situated on a hillside, is "eclectic" in that there are many levels, buildings, nooks and crannies and staircases; it appears to have been built in stages. Dining alfresco, service was great, food delicious! Rooms varied as my wife and I had the opportunity to stay in three rooms during our stay. Room 9 has a great view (trees, islands and ocean) although not as nice as room 21. The latter (21) was a very nice room, size and amenities, with a view of the trees and power lines. Suite/Room 19 was by far the best with living and dining rooms, two baths, and grand bedroom. We spent time in the pool/bar and whirlpool, both great! The staff here try to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, even setting up a special breakfast time for us to avoid the bus tour group. Special thanks to Robert for his gracious hospitality.

We stayed in Penthouse #3, and they added a twin bed for us per prior arrangements, which was very comfortable. The room was large and had a big balcony with 2 lounge chairs, an umbrella, and a little table and 2 chairs. The big glass coffee table in the room was a godsend, as most CR hotels we encountered had very few surfaces for putting things, and no dressers/drawers. The Penthouse rooms come with free lunch and drinks till 7pm - you pay only for tax and service fee (20% total I think). The walk from the room to the lobby involved a few sets of stairs including a circular one with no railing. Also our bathroom had a big lovely tub with the shower overhead, but no grab bars or anything really that you could grab onto if you lost your balance in the tub when showering. The pool was lovely (hooray for swim-up bars!) but deep - I am 5'6" and was on my toes in the "shallow" end. For all these reasons I say this hotel is good for able-bodied grownups, not kids or those with any mobility issues. The staff was nice and responsive, and Robert the weekend manager from NYC is a hoot. The views from the common areas are lovely - the open-air seating areas for breakfast/dinner and lunch were beautiful with great views, and allowed for nature watching while you eat (toucans, sloths, monkeys, etc. if you're lucky). We had dinner at the hotel one night, but ventured out other nights. Victoria's Italian restaurant had some tasty pizza and good live music. The Bat Cave bar in the hotel (no actual bats) is unique and fun to check out, but unless you bring the party with you it's not designed to facilitate being social with other guests (long, dark, and very narrow). The pool area has only a few (4-5) lounge chairs, but there are plenty more up the short stairs to the lunch area, where you can soak up the sun or lie in the shade. We spent most of our time in the pool talking to other guests - everyone was very friendly! The hotel had a free reception in the lobby on Friday for all guests, which was a great way to meet new people (if that's what you're looking for). We met honeymooners, multi-generational families, retirees, and everything in-between. So if you're an able-bodied adult, and especially if your vacations include alcohol, I defintely recommend one of the Penthouse rooms at this hotel.

Room Tip: Penthouse rooms come with free lunch and drinks till 7pm, you pay only for tax and service (around 2...

Thanks for the nice write-up. You are right about the "able body" comment! The Mansion is perched high into a hill-side with "killer views". Unfortunately as a destination the entire area is basically not very well suited for people with handicaps. This is a nature destination with steep hills, awesome views and beautiful flora and fauna. At the hotel we do not allow small children because if its hight as we carved the Mansion out of a rock. For example, the bat cave bar is carved out of a rock and is a kind of a "must see" and does have bats. It is a unique attraction never meant to be a comfortable lounge to meet people. For that reason we are in process of constructing our third bar which will be located adjacent to the IMPROV dining area. Because we are obviously sensitive for those with mobility issues we will be installing an elevator into the main lobby area this May that will provide easy access to the the rooms located on the second floor and pool areas. Again, thanks for your comments and great write-up!

My husband and I stayed there the first week of February. We stayed in Penthouse 4 / Room 26. We felt very welcomed from the moment we walked in the front door and met Stevan at the front desk. He gave us a tour of the hotel. The manager Robert was so personally involved with all the guests, and he was so helpful with any questions or needs that we had:) The room had perfect views of the Playa Espadilla Beach from our private balcony, and could also see the Biesanz Beach from the room. The room location was very quiet and private. Bed was comfortable, and slept good every night. In the mornings from the balcony, you could hear howler monkeys out in the trees. During our stay we seen monkeys, lizards, sloths, toucans, and many other birds.
We went to the swim up bar every day and had such good times and conversations with the bartenders, Jorge and Marvin! These two also worked throughout the hotel, and are very talented at everything they do.The pool was never too crowded, even though the hotel was fully booked during our stay. The food quality and service was above over the top! Atmosphere was great, food was delicious and well presented every time. Hats off to Diego and all the chefs.

The Bat Cave Bar was unique, and everyone should go there at least once. Paola at the front desk was very helpful with scheduling additional tours we wanted to do. All the guests we met were great to hang out with in the many different areas of the hotel. They also had security 24/7, and we always felt safe. A nice touch at the end of our stay is that we got to meet the owner, Harry Bodaan. Sincere thanks to all that made our stay so great!!!

Thanks for your nice review - As I might have mentioned I quite often visit my old "stomping grounds" in Front Royal and still have many friends there from my time in the WDC area. I truly appreciate you taking the time and thanking our staff by name. Most all of those you mention have been with me for at least 8 years and they know what they are doing. I was a pleasure serving you and I am glad you had such a positive experience.

Wonderful hotel. Great service. We caught some fish and the chef cooked it for us the same night. We just needed to let him know what time we wanted to eat.
Being such a small place, the bartender knew everyone's favorite drink and room number. Just walk up and had a drink almost ready.
The rooms were nice sized, the views were beautiful. The view was overlooking the bay and Manual Antonio National Park.
The only thing we didn't like was the maid was turning off the a/c every day. Coming in to an 85 deg. room after fishing offshore all day was not nice. Made a request to the front desk to ask the maid not to do this the next morning before leaving to go fishing but a/c was off again.
We talked to others at the pool that evening and they had the same issue. Someone came up with an idea, we all tried it out and it worked. A/C was on next evening.
Food was wonderful, dining atmosphere was great. Food service was out of this world.
We didn't go to the Bat Cave Bar, we went to bed early for fishing the next day.
The front desk told us about a nice secluded beach not far down the road. It was great also.
The parking lot is very small. The smaller your car, the better.
We traveled as a couple and this is a great couples hotel.
My wife didn't like the mattress, but I slept very good.
If you have a rental car, the road going between Quepos and the hotel is narrow, curvy, hilly and no striping. Also some steep drop off's with no rails along the road.

Thanks for your wonderful review. Sorry about the AC! As part of our Energy Management program (which is monitored by the government thorugh their CST program) we ask our guests and our maids to turn off their AC when they are not in their rooms. They were just following my instructions. The parking lot is small (we can accommodate about 12 cars but we do have a secodn parking lot that can accomodate another 5 cars on the southside of the building. For a total of 17 cars for 23 rooms. Thanks for your nice comments about our food as well - and you can bring in your "fish any time" so our chefs can show you again and again what they do best! On behalf of all our staff a big hug for your review!

My husband and I just returned from a one week stay at La Mansion. We had a great stay and would highly recommend. It's a small hotel so you feel like you're at home. No need to stake out a poolside chair early or wait for anything as there are no crowds..and you get to know the staff and other guests. It is situated on a high hill with breathtaking views of the ocean on both sides surrounded by lush tropical jungle. We saw monkeys, sloth and many tropical birds from our balcony, the pool terrace and dining room. Can't beat the view from nearly any vantage point at this hotel. Staff provided friendly and professional service from the front desk to the restaurant to housekeeping. The manager Robert took time to talk with us and all of the guests and make sure we were happy with everything throughout the week. The rooms are ok (could use updating…especially the shower) but the view from your own balcony is so amazing you won't really care. Make sure you ask for a room NOT facing the front parking area in front of the hotel. Our first night was facing the parking lot and they were happy to move us to a room with a better view for the rest of our stay. Also you can ask them to bring you your own mini fridge for your room so you can enjoy whatever beverages you like.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the parking area. Our room was in a newer area that took a bit of winding...
