This place is not for everyone! But I suspect you're entertaining this vacation rental and reading this review because it's right up your alley. We loved the experience and would stay again.

What is Light of Dawn?

It's an older, however charming home located high in the hills and deep in the rain forest. At this cloud forest elevation, the air is moist, humid and fresh. The sounds of a crashing waterfall to the Naranjo river roaring below, we slept peacefully with bedroom doors open as the evening symphony of insects, birds and rain showers lulled us to deep sleep.

Evenings here are as quiet as you wish! My girlfriend and I found ourselves playing chess at the game table one evening and quietly enjoying each other's company to nothing but candlelight. It was very romantic and fun. Deborah has fresh candles to light at every location imaginable throughout the home.

We cooked most of our own meals however Pete and Deb arranged for several meals to be prepared by a chef. The Tico beef stew and squash soup he prepared offered rich, soothing flavors - we were grateful for the leftover portions.

The dining room has a door that allows the space to feel separated from the main house. The entire home is screened in so critters stay out but you'll hear and smell everything around you.

Deborah and Pete are really caring hosts. They made us feel comfortable while giving us the space and privacy we came for.

A few tips are:

Rent a 4WD vehicle if you're staying here. While I can imagine the road to LofD fares better in the dry season, our wet season journey required 4WD. The drive is fun and exciting as you pass local Tico homes, lose reception on your phone and realize how detached one is from chaotic tourist locales offered near Manuel Antonio and Quepos.

Do not expect to have Internet here. They have WiFi that is supposedly accessible from the main road but we could never connect. This was distressing at first BUT we quickly found that being unplugged from the Internet was so refreshing and a necessary detox.

It was so great having you both. You fit right in to the natural setting and we love to have people who appreciate the uniquness of the rain forest. Thanks also for your patience with the Wifi. Since you were here, we have put up a 40 foot tower and have great internet connection within the house, and also phone through the usual internet apps. I am glad you were able to share that time together and connect here. The forest can out a spell on you like that! Best from you friends in the forest at Light of Dawn

We were looking for a place to relax after all the stress of wedding planning--we got that and more. The trip was made for our specifics. The food was delicious. Peter and Deb were so accommodating. Each night we would go to bed to the sound of the rain forest and wake up to it. I did not want to go back home. I hope to return at some point!

Looking for a place to relax? Less than an hour away from Manuel Antonio, this villa is perfect for recharging, reading and enjoying nature. Pete and Deborah are fantastic and be sure to take Pete's tour. He walks you through his land sharing with you interesting fact about dozens of plants - including cashews and the wonderful flower that makes the famous Chanel No.5. The highlight of the trip was certainly their private waterfall - we could have spent hours there, swimming, jumping in and admiring it's beauty. Evenings were spent on the balcony, mesmerised by the setting sun as clouds rolled into the mountainous landscape. Well worth the visit and a highlight of our Costa Rica trip - Thank you to Pete and Deborah.

““…Walk lightly upon their faces, Leave gentle traces upon their sleep.” Towens Van Zandt”
Reviewed January 8, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

At the end of a 17 kilometer drive down a rocky, dusty stretch of road, past small and quaint Costa Rican villages lies Light of Dawn. Situated in the rain forest high above the coastal town of Quepos visitors will find a most pleasant surprise awaiting. Removed completely from 21st century disarray, one’s inner calm is restored by the varied sounds of nature both day and night. Meandering trails during the day offer natural beauty to remind one that indeed the “world is with us late and soon.” Nighttime brings peace only found when listening to the flow of a river and water fall in the distance and, if you’re lucky enough, the presence of rain on the tin roof. The cool damp air surrounds your sleep and leaves its trace that you only notice when awaking to the sounds of nature. If you’re contemplating visiting Costa Rica, Light of Dawn is a must.

If you are looking for a place that is off the grid then this place is for you. One of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We swam under the waterfall, watched parrots fly around us, daily hikes. The owner, Peter, will take you on a tour of the property and bring a photographer to take pictures for you. That was my favorite day on the property. He gives you the history of the place, names of plants, etc. It was very interesting. The tour of the property ends at the waterfall which is absolutely gorgeous. We actually jumped in clothes and all! The birds, the animals and the flowers everywhere you turn is almost overwhelming. The owners have put a lot of work in this place and you can see the love and care they have put into this! Peter drove us into town for our tours and shopping and did not make us feel like you had to rush. They stocked up the icebox and cabinets with all kinds of stuff. One thing I can tell you is, you will not run out of food! There is no way you will ever eat it all. Edward and Clara were our chefs and I encourage you to let them cook for you. The food was excellent with large servings for leftovers later. They lit candles for the evening meals, very romantic (We celebrated our 35th anniversary there). I wish that I knew more Spanish and had an opportunity to really let them know how special they made us feel. Clara came and cleaned every day, turned down the bed and lit more candles. The whole team worked together and they thought of everything to make this a trip we will never forget! Also, Deborah was so helpful when we were trying to organize flights, tours, food etc. Just email her and she usually got right back to you. I wish our family could have gone too, it was just too beautiful to keep it all to ourselves! We loved this place and would go back in a heartbeat. ENJOY! PURA VIDA!!

“The Perfect Place to Get Away from it all!”

We had an amazing stay at Light of Dawn! The beautiful house is located high on the mountain and makes you feel like you are deep in the rainforest. Our favorite part was the walk through the property with the owner. We learned SO much about the incredible amounts of plants and trees, and the work he has done on the property is astonishing. The waterfall was especially beautiful and we had a great time jumping off the rocks into the cool river. The electricity went out for a bit each evening (not for long) but this made dinners all the more romantic by candle light *they provided PLENTY of candles and flash lights. The construction of the house being all screened in on the bottom made it truly feel like you were out with nature, and the sounds of animals at night and birds in the morning was so peaceful. The owners are extremely nice and care about the comfort and experience of each guest visiting. Highly recommend this place if you want to get away from it all and relax in the Costa Rican rainforest!

“an oasis”

We were a group of five adults, visiting Costa Rica for 10 days. The first part of our trip was spent in the Arenal area, then we drove southwest to Quepos, to Light of Dawn. We had great directions and advance communication from Deborah, and met Peter at the Maxi Pail (market) in Quepos. After some food shopping, we followed Peter to LOD. The trip is not long, but it is on a dirt road, so be ready. We arrived at LOD and immediately were happy we had chosen this location. Peter and Deborah were lovely, and the house was a wonderful oasis in the middle of their 200+ acres of rain forest! The house is comfortable, the living area surrounded by screened in porches. The first floor bedroom does have air conditioning, but the two upstairs do not. There are large fans and we actually turned them off during the night, the temperature was cool enough.
Peter gave us his tour the next morning. This is a tour, but so much more….he talks about the birds, the animals, the trees, bushes, flowers, how they have transformed their formerly grazing land by planting tons of native trees and bushes and flowers, and he shared some of their ideas for the future. We had fun getting wet in the pool created by their waterfall, followed by some fun in the river that runs through their property. The next morning, we had a private bird tour (definitely ask Deborah to hook you up with Manuel for this tour) and saw too many gorgeous birds for me to list (including a toucan). Manuel also took us on a private tour of Manuel Antonio park another day, he is a gem.
Deborah and Peter could not have been more helpful. They arranged other tours for us and offered us any fruit that was growing on the property. We all highly recommend LOD to anyone wanting to feel like you are truly in the rain forest while staying in a lovely comfortable home, with easy access to Manuel Antonio park and Quepos.
