“Very interesting and delicious!”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We had a bit of trouble with the directions to this spice farm, but once we got there it was a wonderful experience. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. We had a chance to taste the spices in their raw form and had samples of delicious chocolates. Next we walked though the beautiful rain forest where we saw the green vanilla beans on the plants, cinnamon trees, and even a hummingbird nest!
I have to admit the tasting was the highlight for me. It was in a comfortable enclosure overlooking the beautiful terrain.
I would highly recommend a trip here-- they do also provide transport from the Manuel Antonio area.

“Camera for the senses”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

This tour was unique because it combined all your senses in the experience. Genevieve graciously gave us a tour in the afternoon despite the rain. She was informative showing us the process of biodynamic farming. The plantation was stunningly beautiful it looked as if it were manicured with the diversity of the plant life working together to create aromatic spices. She gave us samples of cocoa in its fruit form, then the nibs and finally the Mexican Hot Chocolate. She gave us tastes of green cardamom, vanilla beans, Ceylon cinnamon, allspice berries, and pepper corns. Then she took us to a wonderful tree house on the farm while the rain poured down we looked at the mountains in the mist and ate vanilla bean cheesecake, chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream and sipped cinnamon tea. The sights were incredible, the sounds of the rain numinous and the tastes of the spices intoxicating. I highly recommend this tour and at the end I wished I had a camera that captured the tastes and sounds of the experience.

“Best Tour!”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

We were picked up at the home we rented and had a private tour. We were first given a lesson about cacao, vanilla and the other spices they grow on the farm. Then we walked the farm to see all of it growing. They explained that by growing fruit trees and "weeds" they do not have to use pesticides. The farm is so beautiful and peaceful. Then we had a tasting with cinnamon tea, vanilla bean cheesecake and homemade cinnamon ice cream. And of course, you can buy spices and vanilla beans to take home with you at very reasonable prices. It was leisurely and informative. Then they delivered us right back to our door! Absolutely lovely!

“a great tour with 5 star tasting”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

they knowledgeably describe the process of organic farming used to make the spices while walking around the beautiful farm. The tour ends with a tasting in a tree top overlook. The tasting is made form all ingredients grown on the farm. These are cookies, cinnamon tea, hot coco, vanilla bean cheese cake and more.

“Rain but Still Shine”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

My husband and I visited Villa Vanilla on a recent trip to Manuel Antonio. I had learned about this tour through Frommers and self-booked it. We had rented a car so the price was a bit less and we have no regrets about amount of money charged for a very personalized tour. Despite the rain, we learned about the various spices and how shown how they are grown, harvested, procured, and used not just for flavoring, but for medicinal uses, as well. It was quite informative and a highlight of the tour was the tasting component. For this, you go to a charming vista nest overlooking the plantation, and have the opportunity to taste different recipes made using assorted spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, turmeric, and more. I was excited to purchase a variety of spices to bring home to use in my own recipes. A highlight of the tour was our guide, a woman who spoke English perfectly and who had grown up using these plants for health purposes all of her life.
