I stayed at Doce Lunas just in time for the Halloween week and it was fantastic. They always hold their traditional Halloween party and always with a band. Unlike some bar areas that throw the typical wild parties, Doce Lunas had a really fun yet relaxing party that wasn't crowded and above all it was classy. They even had a fun night for the neighborhood kids early that evening. About the hotel, let me tell you, if you stay at this place, you're in for a treat. It's like being in well-kept forest or one big wild garden. It can't get any more Costa Rica than this. The rooms were very nice and spacious and not your typical office looking rooms, not at all. The rooms were like elegant wood cabins and stone. I rate this hotel with five stars except on rooms, only because I think this place should have more rooms. I counted them as 15 the total number of rooms, which probably means that you'll have to make your reservation well in advance during prime season. I've stayed in several hotels, and Doce Lunas is definitely among the top 5, not in price but in quality.

Our dreamlike tropical vacation started at the airport in San Jose. Our personal Doce Lunas driver was prompt and all smiles as he greeted us with drinks and a snack as he loaded our luggage into the 4 wheel drive car. The two hour drive across lush hills to the west coast beach of Jaco ended with us passing through the Eden-like gardens of our private grounds. Even though Costa Rica is a calm and safe country it was still nice to see a private entrance and uniformed security wave us through. Soo many fragrant flowers and brightly colored birds of paradise surrounded us it was almost too much to take in at once: this is all for us?! The staff lead us to our new home just past a wonderful pool that has it's own grotto and waterfall. The room was really a small duplex house with walls and high ceilings crafted of polished teak and ironwood with tile floors, a flat screen tv and a big bathroom. Very nice!

As we left our room and went to visit the restaurant we were mesmerized by the acrobatics of two young women dangling from an enormous tree by long ribbons. They were practicing for the Cirque. But, as enchanting a spectacle as they were the smell of grilled fillets and simmering plantains eventually lured us up the hill towards the large and well appointed open air restaurant. The food all week was well prepared, fresh and tasty. Within a few days the staff knew our preferences and had many items ready for us without even asking. My wife and I are meat eaters but they easily accommodated her sisters' vegan wishes. With soo many tropical fruits and veggies locally grown she was impressed every day with the variety.

The rest of the grounds were equally enticing. The hilltop yoga studio gleamed and was large and serene. The spa was well maintained and had a staff who knew how to melt away any residual tension that may have escaped the mojitos and sunshine. And at a fair price.

When you do eventually want to leave the comforting confines the staff can suggest and book any number of cool excursions. We really liked the canopy tours, wildlife sanctuary and the amazing state parks and high altitude rodeo/carnivals in the mountains. I've never been to a country of such modest means where everyone was soo happy wherever we ventured.

Whenever we needed anything the staff- and sometimes even the property's owner, Christopher [--], was happy to oblige. He proudly walks the grounds and is always making sure you have a good time day or night. I think he used to be a high-end celebrity party planner.

We can't wait to return to Doce Lunas next year with a group of friends. We sent our parents there just last week and they loved it as well. Who wouldn't !!

It's a 5 star resort at half the price!!

The hotel is a tropical rainforest haven! My young kids enjoyed exploring the property's awesome flora and fauna (iguanas, butterflies, tropical birds, and some very friendly cats) and the older kids enjoyed wifi in the rooms and surfing at the nearby beach (2 miles away, an easy cab ride) and the canapy zip line tour arranged through the hotel. Could be a great spring break destination. I understand they also hold concerts on the property. The owner is American and served up a spectacular Thanksgiving dinner. All the meals served were exceptional. We got in late the first night and the young children were hungry, so the chef cooked up a plate of the freshest most delicious fish sticks! The pool is beautiful for a lazy morning or afternoon between outings or even a midnight swim (no pool hours as long as you keep it quiet late at night.) The spa/yoga facility overlooking the rainforest canapy is stunning.

Everything was superb - from the clean and spacious rooms, exquisite grounds and Jeeves-like staff. My travelling buddy and I commented several times about how it felt like we had our own private mansion in a Costa Rican paradise. We stayed 5 nights during the low tourist season and used this hotel as our base for exploring the Pacific coast.

The rooms were quiet, cool and next to the very hip looking pool. The staff were accommodating and never seemed to crack though we must have confounded them with several disjointed requests for help arranging nature tours and taxis. The only problem was that the bathroom door didn't close without a firm push. The thatched palm roof restaurant and bar area added a lot to the experience as well.

Doce Lunas is located "across the way" from Jaco. The hotel is kind of tucked into the hills and removed from the beach scene, which is a positive if having a mellower place to luxuriate is your preference. I was able to walk into Jaco in about 20 minutes or pay about $1 for a ride. The location also allowed for access into both Manuel Antonio Park and Carara Park.

I'd go back in a moment if I could - great memories forged in a great place.

I arrived on the extended weekend of Martin Luther King Day in America and was provided a beautiful room with a nice sitting area and comfortable king sized bed. The bathroom was spa quality and as I arrived at night, I went into the town which is a very cheap cab ride away. The town is full of bars and restaurants and the characters of the night that beach resorts can bring along with a lax attitude toward prostitution. I enjoyed the view of these evening events from a bar with great music and wonderful proprietors right across from the legendary Beatle Bar. Who knew places like this existed. After several hours, I was happy to return to the peaceful and safe confines of the gated community that is Doce Lunas. The next day I swam all day in their beautiful pool and enjoyed an American playoff football game at the bar with the proprietor, Chris. There were birds, cats and even an occasional iguana wandering the lush property of the hotel. You truly feel like you are at a tropical resort and that is Doce Lunas. The facilities are first rate for any part of the world but somewhat shocking in an area as gritty as Jaco. All in all an exceptional experience and I will return in early 2010.

This trip exceeded our expectations from day one and the only reason for that, is because of the staff at Doce Lunas as well as the accommodations and lush scenery at Doce Lunas. As a couple writing this review together, we aren’t exactly sure where to start. We have been in a constant state of bliss since our return and our visit to Doce Lunas will forever be frozen in time. The days were never too long or too short. All of our needs and desires were met and that couldn’t have been done without the help of Brian, the manager Chris the owner, Danny the bartender, Sylvia the masseuse and Shannon the visiting Yoga instructor. Everyone in this staff played a part in our constant state of contentment while in Costa Rica…so much in fact that there are still residuals of happiness radiating within us even as we return to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.
Let us both run you through our magnificent trip and tell you why that if you are going to make a trip to Jaco (even if it’s your first trip or your twentieth trip) you should stay here, at Doce Lunas, our utopia minutes away from Jaco.
Upon our arrival Brian the manager called our room to invite us up to the restaurant Eclipse to buy us a drink. We happily agreed and went up to meet him for a couple of margaritas and some chicken casado prepared by the chefs. Fresh and delicious we might add. While we were talking, Chris the owner was there and provided us with taxi numbers as well as an extensive personalized list of activities, restaurants, adventures and sceneries to explore. Keep in mind that this was a impromptu handwritten note that Chris wrote for us while talking with us at the bar to see what our interests were. Everything that he put on the list was right up our alley and he even included next to each description, what to bring (i.e towels, sunscreen, camera, change of clothes). This impressed us on such a level we can’t even begin to describe. Both of us travel extensively for our jobs and the hospitality provided to us within the first thirty minutes of our arrival had already exceeded a lifespan of hotel hospitality for the two of us combined. After the margaritas, delicious food and travel, both of us agreed that it was time for a siesta, but not before Brian arranged our massages with Sylvia for the next morning, which by the way were glorious. She had to wake me up afterwards, her massage had literally put me to sleep.
We honestly feel like if we wrote everything that we loved about this place it would become a novel, so here are some bulletpoints to solidify your decision that Doce Lunas is the place that you need to stay the next time you are visiting Costa Rica.
-the pool is HUGE and there is a cave with a pounding waterfall where you can sit under and have the water massage your back. There are no hours to the use of this pool so quiet late night dips are allowed, even encouraged.
- the water at Doce Lunas is drinkable from the tap, which is very rare.
- on weekends, in the restaurant there are two huge fluffy couches where you can watch movies in a sort of mini movie theatre environment. The movies are projected onto a large white sheet…everyone drinks, chats and relaxes. For us, this was perfect…we just aren’t the clubby types and after ten o'clock at night in Jaco, that’s all it really has to offer.
- the cost to town is two dollars or a thousand colones. A round trip to explore and observe is very affordable.
- there is no problem finding a taxi at anytime day or night in town. Nice!
- there’s a grocery store in town that will provide you with most anything you’ll need
- Eclipse, the restaurant has a brunch on Sundays with a Bloody Mary bar!!!
- you’re ten minutes or less from Hermosa Beach where you can watch surfers and relax on swings at an outdoor smoothie/sandwich shop or surf too, which is awesome.
- it’s a 15 minute ride to Vista Los Suenos, an amazing zip line canopy tour that is over 3.5km long with 13 separate zip lines that criss cross through the lush jungle….you feel like a little monkey flying through the jungle!
- it’s an hour away from Manuel Antonio, a beautiful national park. The park contains a leisurely hour long hike through the forests, filled with various monkeys, sloth’s, iguanas and other wildlife. There are stunning beaches towards the end of the hike were you can go swimming in warm yet refreshing water.
- keep in mind that transportation to all of these adventures were arranged by Brian, which made us feel safe and knew we weren’t getting taken advantage of by the local tourist and taxi companies.

We are only telling you the highlights here, but trust us if you go to Doce Lunas you will NOT be disappointed.

P.S. As for the reviews who commented on spiders, yes of course there are spiders but it's to be expected, you're in Central America, a tropical climate.
